Meal planning is not hard. We have Pasta Monday, Taco Tuesday (Mexican), Wet Wednesday (Soup), Pizza Thursday, Fish Friday, Stir fry Saturday and Sunday Supper (Roast or meat heavy meal). Easy to meal plan. Best part: my kids don't ask "what's for dinner?" they know.
I have watched your Moms videos and of course, yours. When you (both) talk about saving money on food I just realized how you can do this. Mike, Jill and you are not overweight. Neither are your children or I should say the ones I have seen. You obviously just eat what you need and have portion control. Awesome ! Eating healthy means not over eating. You are a good example. Lots of people in the USA, including myself, eat way more than necessary. It is a bad habit we need to address. Thank you very much for all that you do to help your subscribers to achieve their goals. You don’t just talk the talk, you walk the walk!
My brother and I got either a peanut butter and jelly or bologna sandwich, small baggie of chips and a little Debbie's oatmeal cream pie or starcrunch every day for our lunches. We turned out just fine. If we had been good all week we would get 25 cents for ice cream om Friday. Both my parents made minimum wage $4.25 at the time. Your tips and advice are spot on :)
Tawra, I know this is an older video, however I wanted to say that I hear ya!! I make my own “convenience foods”. If peppers are on sale, if onions are on sale, if mushrooms are on sale ………..I buy them, dice them, and freeze them in 1cup portions. So convenient, and saves time. Love watching you all
I have various home making skills like many wives: sewing, cooking, etc plus a profession. My mother remarked as I was working around the house, " You are the kind of woman a man wants, you make money, you save money (lol)............We had a good laugh about it. RIP mom.
Our household lives on a low fix income, but we do it and we never go without. What I take from these videos is that I need to learn how to cook other recipes other than meat and potatoes or stews. I'm also spending way too much time cooking supper everyday. Love learning new recipes that don't break the bank
We also moved from California to AZ because I remember you saying if we can’t afford where you live move. We have 5 kids and I can continue to stay at home. We have been here a year and now looking to buy a house. Something we could never do in Cali. I enjoy watching you guys. 👍🏼
My fast food 'share trick' is to get one combo meal and then one $1 sandwich and a water. Then we split the 'extras' and it makes a cheap meal for two sharing sides. It's fun sharing and tasting it together. Makes me feel we can go out without the guilt. Our favorite BBQ gives 2 sides, so there's Plenty to go round!
We do take out rarely but when we do only with a coupon We had BOGO and got 2 big chicken burgers for $6 instead of $12. These are emergency nights only pretty much. Tonight I made chili with leftover scraps from other meals.😊
I'm in tough spot financially, so I'm moving to 50% cheaper place next month. And I keep watching your videos for inspiration for food and reducing groceries. Wrote your ideas and got few of my own that were easy to make while listening and wrote them down for next week:))
I am totally with you on being prepared for disasters. I live in L.A. and earthquakes are always a threat. I don't want to be at the mercy of the govt for water and food. BUT even if the govt guaranteed that they could be on scene immediately (which of course they can't), I don't want to be standing in lines with hundreds of other people, waiting to have my water jugs filled. Why go through that misery? Stockpile what you can so you don't have to succumb to the dictates of the govt. I keep meaning to get a bicycle so I can have transportation, since our roads and freeways will be severely damaged after a major quake, not to mention the scarcity of gas...power outages and long gas lines. Do as much as you can for yourself. I even have a solar oven and solar shower bag. The Big Quake will make life miserable, but I want to mitigate it as much as possible. Get it together people!!!
To keep frozen peppers& onions from being soggy...take out empty onto paper towel, cover with more( can be reused after) when your meat is done, remove from pan, turn heat up with just a touch of oil,( just below smoking point) toss in vegetables, and quick sautee/fry.. Turn heat a bit lower toss meat back in and toss all to mix...dish immediately.

I make fajitas with roasted chicken, with sauteed red, green, and yellow peppers and inions. Sour cream guacamole and salsa. i buy burrito tortillas, because they are the larger size, so everybody eats two huge fajitas, and my family loves it.
Prices at Aldi in Oklahoma have increased.Lettuce was .89 now 1.09,saltines were .79 now 1.59, cream cheese was .79 and is now 1.29.I only shop the sales at Aldi now.Ive noticed a decrease in people shopping there.
I love meatless mexican food. Tostadas, bean and rice burritos etc. I also like eating ricotta stuffed cheese shells with spaghetti sauce and cheese on top. I can make a box of 40 stuffed shells and get my hubby and I 6 meals off it. Portion sizes are soooo important not just for health but for money reasons. People eat far to much for each meal and if they realized how much they were actually eating they would be able to save money and live healthier. IF people buy just a few extra things when they are on sale their pantry will get stocked much faster than they think they will, then each week they can shop their pantry and supplement with sales at stores with fresh things or other stock ups.
My method of keeping track of produce and leftovers is a chalkboard. I found paper chalkboards at a dollar store. They are actually large chalkboard stickers, but I don't want to stick it on my fridge, so I hung it up there with magnets. It's more convenient than a list written on paper, because that gets so messy with crossing things out. With a chalkboard or whiteboard, you can easily erase things as you consume them. It has helped me SO much in remembering the stuff hiding in my produce drawers. I also write leftovers on there so I don't forget them and also meal ideas utilizing things I have on hand. Right now it says French Toast, Potato Soup, Limas/Ham Hocks and Burritos.
My daughter’s lunchbox contains multiple items like you described seeing on the field trip. However, her lunchbox does not contain only her lunch. It contains lunch, recess snack, and her after school snack!
Something to bare in mind: wood flooring is great- until you grow older. You ca fall, break a hip or other things, unless you want to wear hospital socks all the time you're inside.

splitting a meal can be ideal. Some places give you so much stuff. They set a 2000 calorie meal in front of one person..... with unlimited tortillas or bread or fries.... it is so much food.
We do cheeze on tacos, but not with fajitas, beef or chicken. We only eat peppers with ours, so I buy when are on sale slice up and freeze in quart bags.
Do y'all plant a garden and cook with that and can your extra vegetables? We have a garden that we eat and preserve the rest by canning and/or freezing! Yes, you don't have to have meat at every meal!! I'm currently doing a pantry cooking to eat what we have and only buying items that we need to prepare our meals!!! My husband and I were talking about eating out just the other day and it's not very often because we're so use to cooking with the spices we like that most meals in a restaurant is not good!!!! I viewed a video the other day where she canned kidney and black bean!! I'm going to do this because even though I'm not a fan of black beans but I love other beans especially pinto beans and the rest of my family don't like them. It will cut down on the time of cooking and when I want some, I can just cook a pint!!! Love your videos, I get so many ideas from all the ones I'm subscribed too!!! I also make freezer meals so I'll have something for meals when my day gets crazy!! I have some stuffed shells and chicken fried rice in the freezer which I'm going to cook one of the chicken fried rice this weekend!!! Cook once and have many more meals is my motto right now!!! Pinto beans and coleslaw as well as garden peas with garden corn are the bomb!!!!
Suffering a bout of illness for an extended period is an emergency. If you are too ill to get to the shops and of course if you are off work not receiving your salary. I suffer with fibromyalgia, collapsed disc’s and rheumatoid arthritis plus I am registered blind but I have meals made for the bad days and have at least 6 months worth of food in at all times. I have been shopping monthly for the past 36 years because we have always lived in small villages, apart from our first two homes where we shopped once as week. So for 36 out of 41 years of food shopping I have always made sure I have plenty of food stored.
For my fajitas I just use cumin onions garlic and fresh bell pepper torts I make my self this is my first time seeing ur show. I have 4 people in my home and I pay 600.00 dollars a month on food and household stuff snacks etc. I believe that is way to much money I need to find some way to save on the food bill :(
I don't think you're getting what someone means by they can't afford to stockpile. Sometimes you can't spend $100 or $50 on butter, even if it means that you'll be saving in the long run. Unless, of course, you want to eat only butter for the week. It's how the poor stay poor - they can't always do these saving techniques. Maybe if you suggest that if it's 75% off, they buy two, not three. Baby steps. It makes more sense.
buying 2 not 3 is how i started, but the savings then start to accumulate and you can go larger and longer eventually hitting the sale turnarounds which is brilliant when you do.x
It took me four months to gather a huge stockpile. Each week I bought a few things that were free or extremely cheap. I usually buy in lots of ten. This week I'm buy 12.00 bacon on sale for 5.00. I'm buying ten. Yep, 50.00 worth. Next big purchase will be butter on sale for Easter.

Just rotate it out and put the new stuff in the back of your pantry. Also use expired food. Most of it is good for years.
