The Canon defiantly searches in 4K. That is why I put it up against the Panasonic Lumix G7. I think they are both great cameras, but they both suffer in AF. Thanks for watching!
Wow, this review is really helpful. I had been sick of so many video reviews showing only the reviewers face rambling instead of the camera itself. This video just shows what we need to know instead of talking. Actually, I could notice the M50 looses focus from time to time while the subject was standing still. Other reviewers please learn something from this video. If you guys want to show you face, it's OK, but it should be relevant!
I appreciate that. I feel like I ramble alot. I knew the focus was going to be an issue in the M50, but I had to see if it was any worse than the G7. The G7 is such a great camera, but the focus is unreliable. There's two things that bug me the most, bad sound and poor focus. Thanks for watching!
Canon color looks much better. I use a M3 and was tempted to get this M50 but the 4K implementation was disappointing. 24FPS, 2.5X crop and lack of dual pixel AF killed it for me. So I'm still waiting on a replacement for my M3, which, BTW, I had to order from Japan at the time because Canon was wishy-washy on mirrorless after the lackluster M sales in the U.S. If I wasn't already heavily invested in Canon glass I would switch to Sony in a heartbeat.
Thanks! This is a phenomenal video showing the difference in the two. The white balance and color space is so much more natural on the Canon and auto focus is terrific. While the color space on Canon is not as natural as Pentax... for video, this seems like a clear choice for the money.
Yes... I picked a bad day to do a worst case scenario test. The AF on both of these cameras are bad in 4K. The M50 is awesome in 1080. The G7 is bad in all cases.
I recommend the M50 in in all cases unless you need AF in 4k. It is just as good as the G7 and other Panasonic cameras. I really wish the Dual Pixel AF was included in the 4K resolution.
Just at 34 seconds and dynamic range behind you is actual deal breaker for me. Panasonic is all black at your right while Canon shows leaves in shadows. Dynamic range is the main reason what makes Arri Alexa and Red camera so expensive and popular in huge productions.
Thanks for this comparison clip! I'm not a pro but I can see that the M50 renders a much better image: it's AF is superior, its colors more vibrant (the Lumix G7''s colors look faded), and a nicer contrast for more details (is it the same when in picture mode? If yes then the G7 would be quite mediocre). EDIT: However, when testing outside under a rainy day at around 7:00, the M50's AF behaves oddly (does it have face detection activated?)... Although the M50's colors and lighting/contrast are still better, the Lumix wins on the AF side (again, which is odd, and can be a most important factor when talking about video shooting: *looking at blurry videos is more annoying than looking at color faded ones* - depending on the topic and object of the clip of course). The DSLR Rebel SL3, or the 850D (the T8i), have dual AF for video clips, maybe it would suit better? What about the EOS RP?
I am not gonna lie to u, I saw Canon EOS M50 being out of focused more then Lumix. Also while I was watching I tho "OMG Canon video looks so much better" Then it started to rain... And I was like... ok so it looks sunny on canon but it is raining... so... that means that Panasonic is actually doing a real natural view. And I am still keeping in my mind that Canon costs more than Panasonic currently... Dunno seems like Panasonic is a winner for me.
Great thoughts! The purpose of my channel is to help you form your own opinion. I love it when viewers come to their own conclusions instead of just taking my word for it. What do you want out of your gear? What are you going to do with it? You be you. Thanks for watching!
The M50 looks better from the camera but the g7 looks like is more workable in post. The autofocus on the G7 wasn't that terrible, the 4k is better tho, image quality, focus, everything.
i can't decide between g7 and canon800d.. i'm interested in film making , the canon can just film full hd at 60fps but it never looses focus.. btw now on ebay the g7 is at 372€ while the 800d is at 509€.. my max budget is at 550€ so buying the g7 would allow me to buy also some extra lenses (both cameras are sold with kit lenses).. So difficult to choose
What do you want to do? Most cameras now a days will get the job done. I liked my G7 alot, but as a one man crew, the slow focus bugged me. If you are behind the lens... this might not be an issue for you. I have rocked Canons for years, and they have never let me down. Good luck on your decision.
To the untrained eye not looking for in and out focus detail I’m reading in the comments, I don’t even notice when M50 loses focus when you move. Personally overall M50 looks better, only in the last scene did Panasonic look kinda better, but overall. M50 looks great 👍🏼
I think the Canon produces a rosy red colour on your face/nose which is pleasant but a bit distracting. Panasonic G7 has more neutral colours, but the G7 had a horrible grey cast halfway through the video when it was raining. Both are fairly good budget cameras, though I do wonder about the M50's 4k crop which means you can't really use the 4K on the M50 for many wider angle shots.
Good observations. Many people are concerned with the crop. all you need to do is scoot back about a foot and you are good. I didn't notice it in this test, because I framed the shot on each camera. I am usually zooming in any way, so the M50 just zooms less.
People are saying the g7 is better but Honestly I think it depends on who is using it! If whoever’s reading this doesn’t mind spending ‘5 minutes setting up’ like Shawn states and also wants your videos and photos to be a lot more natural then go with the g7 but me personally I prefer the m50 as it looks brighter and looks better in different lightings, you also don’t need to spend ‘5 minutes setting up’ as the auto mode is really good! I’m for sure going to buy the m50 especially how it’s going to be my first camera and it’s a very decent as a starter camera!! :)
I agree with you! Good luck on your purchase. Most people that comment are already a fan before they watch my videos. I try to be as objective as possible. Thank you for your comment.
Question. One thing that annoyed me about my EOS M was that in video mode, clips were limited to 30 minutes. Magic Lantern was an option, but too many bugs. Is there such a time limit on EOS M50? I didn't see anything in the quick spec's. BTW, I stopped using my EOS M and moved on to a Canon HF G30. It was a refurb a Cannon for 1/2 off retail, plus I had a 25$ coupon. I think $450 was the final price and it works great. I have a regular DSLR, so right now dual purpose photo/video are not critical to me. Thanks.
If you have never shot on the m50 then go shoot on it for a day or so then come back. Everybody reads the specs off and says the 4k sucks when in actuality it's amazing. The 4k is clear af, the 2.5 crop is completely irrelevant, and yes there is a lack of 4k dpaf but for half the price of the Sony I can manage it. The Panasonic doesn't have anything equivalent to dpaf... especially at this price point. You can always manual focus or use the contrast detection focus in 4k which is comparable to the g85. Larger sensor than the micro 4/3 and paired with a $40 adapter you can use the best lenses in the industry. I'm super stoked I was able to try before I buy because this m50 is amaze-balls. Even compared to the Sony a6500.
Ha... Thanks... I decided to sell them both and get the Canon GX10: th-cam.com/play/PL61yQw2CZbG_JWhgS9UP3AuRZdwUc2nlj.html I wanted Canon Dual Pixel AF and 4K. It can shoot for 190 minutes on one battery and can hold 2 128gb SD Cards.
Seems like the colour looks nicer on the canon, but defiantly searches for focus when you move around way more then the G7. The shot where its raining, the canon has no idea what to do but the G7 seems to hold on to focus most of the time.. There's no perfect combo at a cheaper price bracket it seems. Whoever figures this out eventually will sell lots of cameras... Good video. Thanks
I am not the person to answer that question, but here is a quick article on the subject: petapixel.com/2014/03/28/concise-explanation-crop-factor-affects-focal-length-aperture/
Nice Video Shawn, I am highly interested in purchasing the M50 soon as well, but another thing I am really really interested in, is what mic you are using? Is it a wireless model? Might be a newbie question, but I haven't seen this type of mic too often on other youtubers. Thank you!
I know this is a year old, so I may be criticizing old content that's not reflective of new content. That said...the Canon image is freaking soft, which has been my experience with all Canon stills bodies. Your exposure on the G7 is set improperly in the 6:40 scene. It looks like you have a frame rate setting mismatch between the two. The G7 looks like you've lowered contrast in the settings and may have used a picture profile that's not Standard. This is not a good focus test because you clearly have the apertures closed down, even in the "low-light situation," so most of the frame is already in focus.
I appreciate your comments and will take them to heart. Thanks for watching! This entire video was taken at the default settings. I usually conduct my tests in this manner to show the initial experience to the viewer. Both cameras take great video, and they can be manipulated to look like each other through camera settings. Canon's generally have softer images with great colors. Panasonics generally are sharper with muted colors in comparison. Most people don't notice outside of a side by side comparison. It is like the moon... Next to a tree, it looks huge, but up in the sky it looks tiny. It is all perception.
@@ShawnFoxhorn I don't find Canon to have better colors. They tend to always boost the reds in a way that is annoying to reduce in post and match against other hardware. I don't understand why Canon hardware puts out such a soft image either. A bigger sensor with 50% more pixels somehow ends up being lower in detail and it drives me nuts. I've relegated my T6i to secondary camera and my G7 does all the heavy lifting. By the way, if you have any Panasonic camera, go into your picture profiles and crank the noise reduction all the way down; it makes a big difference in a good way. Panasonic noise is just so much nicer than Canon noise until you get past ISO 1600 or so, then it just turns yellow for some reason.
Hey great video! The Canon M50 is looking like my next camera. I would recommend you cut out some of your pauses and mess ups. Maybe you usually I just noticed It runs a bit long. Anyway keep up the great work
in a quandary between m50 and lumix g7 or g85...started thinking Canon but a friend pushed me away..pulling the trigger today on something. Ug. Starting to get more serious about video production for my restaurant, and obviously lots of food shots. Welcome any feedback!
Is 4K necessary for you? Where will your content be displayed? I purchased this: amzn.to/2wHApTK . The Canon GX10 has dual pixel focus and 4K. It is pricy, but I am set for many years. In the 1080 game... I would suggest a Canon M50: amzn.to/2wHIZBa ... It will shoot 4K, but the focus is at the same level as the g7 and g85. At 1080, it has amazing focus. Panasonic shoots great video, but the focus sucks. If you want to learn how to manual focus, then all of these cameras are great. I have lost hours of footage because my Panasonic G7 couldn't focus. My Canons with Dual Pixel never fail me.
That's the important question... What's good for you? I need a camera that can be an automatic film crew. If 1080p is all you need... the Dual Pixel blows the competition out of the water, period. All of these cameras work great if you are behind the lens, but the G7's spotty focus has been a pain in my process. I make videos on my lunch break, and I am usually in the moment. It is frustrating when you get home in the evening to find 60% of your footage is unusable.
@@ShawnFoxhorn Oh yeah I've had the same experience. I record a cover just to find my G7x stopped recording after a minute. I just need something that I can set up, press record, go play drums, stop record. I will not be behind the camera. Something with good color, autofocus that won't lose track as I'm drumming, and something that won't die/stop recording after 5, 10, 15 minutes - preferably longer than 30 mins recording time, but I can deal with it if there's still a 29 min limit.
Great video :) This is really relevant... what about the difference in low light video between the two? Is the G7 much better? and sharpness? I heard 4K video is really soft on the M50...Thanks :)
at 13:51 your out of focus for a moment on the Canon screen. People arent watching yours or others videos thinking about how it would look so much better on another camera unless they are shopping cameras. Most $500-700.00 cameras are fine for youtube. Content and artistic value are why we all watch youtube anyways. I would personally be happy with either of these two cameras. Look at many dedicated video cameras with 1 inch sensors that sell for thousands of dollars and yet people scoff at Micro 4/3. How silly we are getting caught up in this DXO mark scam. Your pictures and video should reflect a mood not a megapixel. I love both Micro 4/3 and APSC. Both serve my needs perfectly.
And you are asking about quality difference or focus 8:46 between the 2 cameras in this shot... one thing I notice is that the Lumix causes the rain to be more visible as the drops fall down in the field of vision. This may not affect the overall focus- but the EOS seems to hide that nearfield debris- not that you'd be recording out in the rain that often... but it may have other areas it applies to.
Sigh.. in all respect you dont know what youre talking about, and there is no rationality to your camera choice. You went through 3 different sensor sized cameras so theres no consistency between any of your cameras and evertything you say sounds like info you picked up from other youtubers opinion.
Thanks for watching. Apparently you are new here. My channel is experimental so you don't have to be. I watch other TH-camrs, but my opinions are mine, based on my experiences and my journey. If you want pretty, creatively scripted marketing that doesn't hold up in the real world, than my channel is not for you. If you want an honest guy that purchases the product off of the shelf (not a pre-release copy with a contract that ensures I say nice things), then I hope you stick around. If it's good or bad, I'll tell you. I believe in constantly improving myself, so that is why I try out different cameras and share these experiences. I shoot on a Canon GX10 which has a 1 inch sensor, can shoot for hours without overheating, has 2 SD slots, 4k Dual Auto Focus, Built in ND Filters, Log mode and beautiful color science. I decided on the GX10 because of this journey. I am a User Experience Engineer, so even my career is focused consumer experience. I see from your videos that low light is important to you, so the m50 would not be the best camera for you... but in this video, the m50 kills the G7. Some of that may be due to the G7 having a slightly smaller sensor. Have a wonderful day!
How am I gonna ride that? I have a few nice L Lenses and am considering getting this body. I current don’t have a body. I sold it while it still had value. I hate how the bodies get outdated so quickly. I refuse to spend big coin on a body for it to be old news in 12 months. I should get a full frame body, but I don’t want to spend 1300 bucks to just take Milky Ways shots.
If I have money ....I will consider consider sony...and if I have less money ....I will consider fuji or lumix...but canon produces very oversaturated pictures 🥵🥵🥵
Am I the only person noticing the canon "searching"? Great video man. I'm currently looking a new camera and these two are on my list.

Only 4 minutes in, but they EOS color and sharpness looks much better on my calibrated monitor.

Yeah... I love the way the Canon looks.
I like the colors from Lumix G7 & M50 feels kinda overexposed and bit temperatures are high
The canon seems to be in vivid mode and unatural whereas the G7 looks more natural as its in the rain (Darkish)
Thank you for your comments!
So since I own a LUMIX DMC G7 it’s not worth it to sell and get a Canon M50 I see. Thanks for the side by side comparison

I agree... Thanks for watching!
I was told the m50 has dual autofocus in 1080p..is that right or wrong?
Wunderlich Drums you are correct... and it’s awesome
@@ShawnFoxhorn Awesome, thank you! I'm deciding between the Canon M50, M100 and Panasonic G7. Can't really figure out which is best for me 😂
@@ShawnFoxhorn But the color from that M50 looks really great, probably more accurate to real life than the G7
The problems with the focus of the canon comes from 4k
In Full hd the focus is extremly strong!
LexT you are right... the Dual Pixel AF is top.
Great video :) This is really relevant... what about the difference in low light video between the two? Is the G7 much better? and sharpness? I heard 4K video is really soft on the M50...Thanks :)
I sold these 2 cameras to get the beast I film on now. They have the same sensors in them I believe, so they should be very similar.
what camera did you buy then?
I got the Canon GX10: th-cam.com/video/jEH-DjGcnZQ/w-d-xo.html
to me the canon picture is best the Lumix has washed out colour
*😀👀fully watched👀🚶♂️ left our like👍👍🎥😎*
Thanks Billy B!
Yeah, but the color is to bright for an actually raining day... just saying.
I see you do so much effort! Good luck:)
Thank you so much!
G7 is queen!
So does that mean the M50 is king? Thanks for watching!
Yep! they are from two different castles but still the same XD
btw, great video!
Thank you!
Thank you!
at 13:51 your out of focus for a moment on the Canon screen.
Thanks for watching!
Yeah... I think the rain killed the focus test.
Canon performed better, editing 4k video is a pain.
Sir 80D Vs M50 which one is best ?
I do not have the M50 anymore... and I do not have an 80D. I am sorry.
@@ShawnFoxhorn Ok no problem . Thank you for replying 🙂
definitely 80D!! we use them in our video production class and the 80D is phenomenal
G7 Kit + Card + Bag 399€ .... M50 Kit 570€ .... hmmm.... Focus on Photography, i should deal with the G70 ?
Sounds good! Thanks for watching!
I thought this will include a 4k AF on both cam,.. Can you upload a comparison between this cam in 4k AF video. We really want to see that
Thanks for watching... I am confused as to what your request is. Both cameras are in 4K and running in AF mode.
@@ShawnFoxhorn yah they both run 4k AF mode and we want to see that differences in video.
@@ShawnFoxhorn But the canon don't have dual pixel in 4k !!! So, you don't use the dual pixel on the M50 because you record in 4k !!! right?
@@luismiguelsilva9903 yes m50 doesnt have dual pixel in 4k and he missed that 4k comparison. What a shame.
What lens was one the m50?
This was filmed with the stock m50 lens: 15-45mm, 0.25mm/.08ft-∞ with Image Stabilizer... Thanks for watching!
also the fine stripes on your sleeves seem to go out of focus quite a bit
On which camera?
Shawn Ide Studios on the canon
The G7 is better since you have to go back and edit your video anyways and color correct. The M50 AF in 4k stinks.
Good point... Thanks for watching!
the focus was not good enough, IMO
How about low light video?
Sadly I do not have these cameras any more. They both take different lenses, so you can let more light in, but a small sensor can only do so much.
Hey in the first part of your review seem like g7 do a fine in low light. Check the backyard. Is this a kitlens or use in a good low light lens?
The G7 does quite a bit better in lowlight due to better codecs.
AF on the G7 wins and color on EOS M50 Wins...
Thanks for watching!
I LOVE THE CAMERA CANON IS MORE NITIDA ...
Thanks for watching!
get the canon if you want to look healthy
the M50 won!
Agreed!
Sigh.. in all respect you dont know what youre talking about, and there is no rationality to your camera choice.
Have a wonderful day!
beatifull canon eos m50.
She's so perty!
Sell me the canon.
Lol... I'll trade it for your bike.
Colour of canon is worst and will be worst in the future...
Thank you for your opinion. How do you know the future?
If I have money ....I will consider consider sony...and if I have less money ....I will consider fuji or lumix...but canon produces very oversaturated pictures 🥵🥵🥵
Very bad image processing and quality... Makes light green deep and makes face white....
Definetly the most boring channel
I'm doing alright... Thanks for watching! I will check out your channel and learn from the master... lol
@@ShawnFoxhorn hahaha sir dont even waste your time on theise kind of people..... great video thank you!!!!!
