The boys picking up the casket hits me like a tonne of bricks everytime. Reminds me of my mate Jacks funeral. I think ive replayed that bit 100 times...
I think some could. Some kids thrive with that encouragement, others will crumble under pressure... its important to know your kid and learn from them, about what is best..
It was interesting that he and Josie had the same kinds of pressures. Josie had this cultural pressure to be the perfect Italian girl and John had the upper class pressure to be a politician. But Josie stood up to her Nonna whereas John couldn't.
Around 2003/2004 there was a young girl who wanted to do hairdressing but that wasn't good enough for her parents. I'm sure I saw her sitting on a seat near a train station one day when she should've been at school. It wasn't long after that I heard she killed herself by stepping in front of a train. Some parents cause far too much stress on their children by wanting them to be what they want and not letting the child choose for themselves.
glad to hear they're still teaching this in english classes... this movie was so authentic to the year 12 experience when I was growing up! and the soundtrack was one of the best too!
It still makes me cry, not matter how many times I see it. John's words are so honest and moving, and spoken over such a raw song, it sends shivers over my skin.
our English teacher played this movie to us in class and then this scene came on and i started crying, in class! it's the saddest scene i have ever seen! love the movie!
This is why it is important to remember not to bully people or live your life through others or try to force your opinions or beliefs on people. Freedom of choice, freedom of self is far more complex and more deserving for everyone than possibly imaginable..
im not a cry-er when it come to most sad movies. but something about this scene, this song and his words that just gets me every single time. I'll never have dry eyes after watching this. Amazing film
She felt like she was freeing a piece of his soul. It explains it more clearly in the book that it was based on. I cried when I read it and John died. This song matched the scene really well.
this is one of the saddest and most poignant scenes in a movie that i have ever watched and the stillness in the song is beautiful. the note floating down is beautiful too, as if john has escaped somehow
I cried reading about his death in the book, and I am pretty lucky I was alone when watching the movie... It's just... it's so sad... And I've never been able to forget this song. Never.
i dont know if u herd of the boy who went up 2 schoolies after he completed his HSC(2009) .. came back got his results and commited suicide... every year that goes buy its not uncommon to hear of a yr 12 hsc student suicide. i did my hsc and believe me i wasnt that far off... anxiety and deep depression almost took my life.. i thank my friends and family for their endless support.. R.I.P all victoms of suicide, and for thoes who have depression talk.. its the best thing u can do
The true essence of morality, mortality and reality. You grow up fast watching movies like this. Ones that have meaning. Not that it meant much in year 9 english class. Though it sure prepares you for what's about to come.
When i read the book for the first time i didn't expect him to die at all and i cried during the book and the movie i really liked the song the chose and the bit when he was reading from the note he left it was really emotional and well written. :D
I remember the first time i watched this i was with some guy friends and it was the first time i cried in front of them. It was such a heart breaking scene, especially when she talks about what they did with Johns sheets.
@allyfan1987 It's on the movie soundtrack. It's by someone named Hamish Cowan. I bought the CD when I was on holiday in Australia back when the movie came out. Don't know if it's still on sale now, though.
BTW Hsc is for thoes who are international, or outa state of Australia. it is the end of school test, alot of people struggle, and push them selves.. all to get the best UAI or as they call it now atar, a number to get into uni, and parental presure has alot to do with it. every time i watch this i cry, knowing its sort of what i went through... im 1st generation australian,(italian 100% sicilian) first girl out of the entire family to do this exam, and to complete my education.
There are so many alternatives though if people don't get the HSC score that they hoped for. Its easy to transfer after first year of another course, for example.
@@alphabet_soup123 yea but that's now. but back in say 2000 or even earlier, this was it. pass or fail. no other way around it. so that's why, tragically so many young people committed suicide from the pressure that was sadly put on them. as i am doing the test this year, i am forever grateful that the learning system managed to modify it so that there are many ways to get to your goal.
Interesting how the movie differs from the book and strongly hints that Barton was gay and repressed. "If I could be what you want me to be, I'd want to stay. But I am what I am and all I want is freedom."
are u srs? u have just seen a boy who she loves kill himself and she later finds out why by reading this note which describes devastating features of a persons life? as well as with that musc playing in the background. how can u not?
20 years later and still crying my eyes out watching this scene
Me too. I still remember seeing it at the movies

One of the most powerful scenes in Australian cinema great film
His dad was grooming him to be Prime Minister at the age of 17. No kid can handle that pressure & expectation

Classic millennial movie, watched this as a teen in English class 15 years ago. I'm 30 now, never forgot this deeply moving scene!
"But I am what I am, and all I want is freedom". Most beautiful suicide note ever
Why only 330 likes? This scene is the essence of every english class in Australia for a reason :)
Reason not rheason ,)
We did this in English like a week ago
glad to hear they're still teaching this in english classes... this movie was so authentic to the year 12 experience when I was growing up! and the soundtrack was one of the best too!
I was just about to start high school when this movie came out
Literally!!!! Every millennial’s teenage movie
That was such a perfect movie.
It still makes me cry, not matter how many times I see it. John's words are so honest and moving, and spoken over such a raw song, it sends shivers over my skin.
I was on a Qantas flight when I first saw this and had tears streaming down my face. Such a sad and poignant scene. Thanks for this.

I've been looking for the name of this movie for 14 years! Can't believe I found it!
You were quite literally ‘Looking for Alibrandi’ 😆

Watched this movie in English and I cried a little at this scene. Not gonna lie.
Same here! This scene was pretty sad, heard a few people choke up at this scene
+WarDragon72345 Me too. Australian curriculum, ay.
pretty powerful darlin
WarDragon72345 my class isnt allowed to watch it so we are all watching it at home lmao
I did this in english in highschool. I'm 29 now and still cry at this scene. 8t hits home having lost two Male friends to suicide.
The recording of the exhale and sniffle from one of the coffin carriers at the start is so appropriate and moving
this song is so beautiful.
it was perfect for this scene!
Missed the next scene on the bus. Just heart breaking seeing her true sorrow come to the surface.
i watched this at school and felt like i was going to cry. its a really good movie :)

Hey, I watched it in year 8 and it was very profound!
They perfectly cast John Barton.
i bawled in this bit
this bit makes me cry, but i love the words of his letter, deep
awesum movie
i start shivering each time i here the letter he wrote
When i read the book for the first time i didn't expect him to die at all and i cried during the book and the movie i really liked the song the chose and the bit when he was reading from the note he left it was really emotional and well written. :D
no...it's in the middle
ah so sad...thanks for posting keyjae!

it hurts to lose someone, but it burns when it is by their own hand
i think that the mother isnt crying for a reason, when you are in shock or so sad that you cant even cry, that shows real love.
This is such a sad scene. Not long ago, my cousin died the same way John Barton did (committed suicide) and they played this song at his funeral. :(
It's sad how killing himself was the only choice John ever made for himself
i love this movie i cry every time
My english teacher - Miss marchetta - was the novelist. I always had the impression she was disappointed with the film adaption
I'm responding to this comment 12 yrs later, but I adore Melina's books. That would have been amazing having her as your teacher. So jealous!
My favourite scene!
This is very haunting, the pain on his fathers face.... grief.
i read this book in grade 10 and when i was reading this part it made me cry
I go to school where this was filmed
This scene really hit me hard... 😪
This movie came out just before I started high school
oh no here comes the tears!!!
aww!
I cried so hard
on john's note, i f*ckin cried.
cuz my brother wanted the same--freedom.
this scene is so sad, it just about makes me cry
@chetdog
Yeah, it's the song 'With or Without You' by U2, but covered by Hamish Cowan.
@allyfan1987 It's on the movie soundtrack. It's by someone named Hamish Cowan. I bought the CD when I was on holiday in Australia back when the movie came out. Don't know if it's still on sale now, though.
Just been to my mates sons funeral. This resonates
ii love this movie
She loved him.. RIP ML Gowr 😪💙
the song is so sad... it makes me think of how sad i would be if i lost MY friends :(
yes
@chelsea1802
That's so sad for you. A boy at my school also committed suicide. It's one of the most devastating things when a person feels no hope.
with or without you - hamish cowan verson. song is originated from U2.
I cried.
I cried in the book, too.
this scene always reminds me of the end of Dead Poets Socitey
Could someone put the whole movie up??
the pressure from his father
Because all he wanted was freedom. Shes setting him free
So sad.

Nigward I’m currently learning this now in English and we’re watching it!

which band sings this song?

This scene and song belongs to my friend and I. Oh, the memories in english class.
Why exactly did John Barton die? To be free from what? Was his father expecting too much of him?
Me too! I need it! :/
Option 3: Use the sheets as a halloween costume.
i read the book for english and this movie doesn't do it justice.
i was expecting way better.

song name?
U2 - With or without you
My Favorite Song! Forever!
Its a cover of the U2 song With or Without You by Hamish Cowan.
