    • @olgahein4384
      @olgahein4384 5 ปีที่แล้ว +244

      It's not a trick though, but basic facial/ head proportions. There's a whole catalogue for perfect proportions (of realistic faces). If you are into art, no matter what style and medium, I'd really suggest to get a book or a course on that. Believe me, it works wonders to have some knowledge that boosts your skills.

    • @AfroNinja360
      @AfroNinja360 5 ปีที่แล้ว +150

      Oh yes of course! I never considered it a trick per say, but I just never noticed it as a way to bring facial structure together, and what lays down a foundation of realism. Now having a better understanding with it being pointed out to me, I realize how important that small line-up of facial detail can be. Depending on what the artist is going for.

    “Style” means that you are doing something on purpose, which means you are choosing to do it, which means you could theoretically choose to not do it. So in order to honestly claim something is stylized you have to have the skills to draw it correctly. If the only thing you’re capable of is tilted characters with glued-on hair that’s not a style it’s a deficit in your skill

    Just to clarify for some: the difference between "style" and "unproportional" usually comes down to consistancy!
    If your drawing has fairly normal proportions, but then the eyes are skewed, or the arms are too short... those are just anatomical mistakes. In this case crying "muh style!!1" in response to criticism is just gonna stunt your artistic growth. You're probably just using "style" as an excuse to not improve.
    A "stylistic choice" is usually consistent across the board. If the WHOLE DRAWING is purposely skewed and cartoony, than a skewed face counts as "part of the style." This is why artists like Butch Hartman, or even Picasso or whatever get away with it. Their art is consistant in its' lack of natural anatomy, so it reads as intentional and charming!
    ---
    I can even use myself as an example! In my super cartoony style I give my characters a "flounder face," where the whole face is shifted towards the the "camera," overlapping most obstructions. This makes the expressions more clear, while adding to the toony-ness!
    BUT if I did that to my more naturally-proportioned style, it would just look strange, because it's so blatantly out of place.
    Hope that makes sense?

      And if it's a mix of intentional and unintentional distortion, then by that description then it's both style and ignorance, which... quite frankly is an argument I would fight for. As an artist who used to make the style argument, who has since learned a lot about the fundamentals, and who goes red in the face while laughing and squealing in embarrassment when I share my old art with friends, I stand by that while a part of that art was made in ignorance, part of it was definitely a conscious style decision too. I think it is wrong to try and completely separate the two from one another, to say that style is only for studied artists while any attempt at such a thing as a novice is mere ignorance. It really puts novice artists down an unnecessary degree, too.
      Granted I say this as someone who finds value in the work of novices too. Many practiced artists that I've seen seem to have lost the heart in their artwork. They don't experiment, and many times when I've seen practiced artists remake a very old work of theirs one of the first things I notice is how much of the emotion they *removed* from the piece, usually taking something emotionally charged and changing the facial expression to that thousand-mile model stare like you get from just about every pinup artist on the market. Some of the things that novice artists are willing to do that most practiced artists are not give me inspiration in my own work.

They didnt give them cat faces, or even noses! Just fleshy, pink lips pushing through their CGI fur. That, and how they don’t have ears. In the play, they all had fur on the side of their head to cover the lack of ears. In this one, it’s just a smooth head and I hate it.

    On the front of art styles in movies, I think it’s definitely improving but getting worse at the same time. The animation and photo realism is visually stunning, but are half of the movies doing it really necessary? for example the new Lion King movie. A good example of amazing animation currently would be the new Spider-Man film, it was a beautiful piece of art, because of the style and the fact that it was an ORIGINAL story.

      yeah that movie was honestly really amazing

    • @tomo4977
      @tomo4977 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I guess just that animation is becoming so much more accessible and "easily" done through technology, if you're a company that has the resources already like Disney, making a hyper realistic remake can actually be little spent out relative to the amount of money it brings. Overall, I still think animation is improving with quality, but simply due to the amount of it easily produced we're gunna get a lot that appeals to "trends" and panders (hyper realistic movies), rather than anything substantial, money making machines (Disney remakes, a lot of Illumination films), and teams using it that simply don't understand the medium (new sonic the hedgehog movie probably) as well as companies that know they can be lazy with it or force the team in being lazy even when they know otherwise and still get money.
      I think that last point applies the Steven universe, I think Cartoon Network is horrific with scheduling it, and I think the tight deadlines forced into the team produce their really bad storyboards... though I could be wrong, and think Sugar isn't experienced enough... either way they apply to at least one of the points I've listed

    • @Commenter839
      @Commenter839 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tomo4977 Does scheduling when the show airs even have anything to do with making the show behind the scenes? I mean, I get that it's frustrating to work on a show that CN barely airs, but I thought episodes were finished well in advance of them airing, anyway. I mean, if not, then CN hardly airing Steven Universe should give them MORE time to work on the show. I could be wrong, though.

    • @tomo4977
      @tomo4977 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Commenter839 well I could be wrong too about that lol, but I was thinking more along the lines that they give the crew really tight and restrictive deadlines and overall don't work well with the team or their vision. And then, instead of releasing them well and consistently, they prefer giving more constant airtime to shows like TTG and more money- making shows. I have heard even the crew complain about the scheduling, and I have heard rumours of how very tense and chaotic it is in CN right now. I could also be wrong however, even in tight situations storyboard artists can succeed, and it may be because the boarders on right now are just not trained enough or have the wrong art direction with what is happening. A lot of the team previously worked on Adventure Time, but inconsistencies works as a style on AT, not on SU even if they still have the habit...
      I just hope they can fix it soon.

    Sadly some people don't recognize the difference between style and not good. Thankfully, it's usually young children who have yet to learn relative proportion and rhythms of the body. They don't understand where the line lies between artistic liberty and artistic error.
    It doesn't really help though when the bullies in the art community out there will use this as a go-to argument to insult someone's art style. I once had some egotistical crazy chick try and list off everything that she determined was wrong with my art and it included a ton of stylistic adjustments that are used on the regular like the eyes being too big, neck is too long, unrealistic curves, etc. (I'm not saying my art couldn't use some improvement at the time, but it was also clear she was just trying to fatten up the list of why my art sucked so she could feel like she was the greatest artist alive).
    It takes a bit of learning before the differences visualize themselves for these kids, yknow. It's still annoying to see people use that argument, but there's some comfort in reassuring yourself they're likely so young that they haven't learned those fundamentals yet.

    About the Steven Universe part: I TOTALLY agree. I like that show a lot, but some character designs and the fact that some other change size in every episode (or in every shot) just ruins the entrie experience to me. I just recently finished Hilda, and the style is AMAZING. Not only it was so good in the storytelling perspective, but the consistency of sizes and style just made everything much more pleasing to watch.

    Very good video! I loved your straight and simple explanations, and the helpful visual demonstrations. And to summer your words up, here is what my 3D animation teacher always say- before breaking the rules and going your own unique way, you first need to learn to follow the rules to a tee. When creating an art piece, you need to first create it in absolute perfection, so later on you would know exactly how to "destroy" it.

    I DON'T WANNA GO TO SCHOOL I JUST WANT TO BREAK THE RULES!!!!!!!!
    Says all the artists who don't get farther than their own bedroom. I mean... Realism is cool and all, and I really admire the people who can copy a picture according to the smallest of details, of course, you should also be able to draw from our head and what not. If you can only copy pics... Well, that won't go too far either. But it will get you much farther than never learning realism. Take it from me. I have drawn a long period of my life, and you would think that gets you far. I mean it's not wrong when people say you need to practise. But practice is not the same as just drawing a lot if you don't know what you are doing. I attempted an art school and got full points on the test to go there, but sadly my grades were not high enough (Idk how getting to school works in the USA but in Finland it different from school to school and this one had a test and looked at grades), The test got 40 % off drawing/painting anything that comes to your mind from this one poem we were given. And the other 60 % came from a real-life piece! (In full you got 0-3 points) YOU COULD NEVER GET INTO THAT WITHOUT STUDYING FIRST!! I'm not that good in realism so I'm pretty sure it was there and there that I had full points. But gladly I had studied realism, drew from real pictures no matter if I enjoyed it. At some point, I started to take art seriously and I had to learn that it's not just a hobby to everyone, if I wanted to get good, I needed to study. A style is okay, and its good you have one, but you shouldn't lock it before you know how the world is around you and before you learn to look at it as an artist. And yes that sounds very stupid but I mean that you learn to look at it with how it works, simple shapes and added detail. Its hard to explain, you know after you study arts.
    Sorry about the length. I just really needed to say this because I think that my experience might help. Then, of course, I know it won't. You can't make someone change their minds when they are not willing to.

      Art school? Hah, you clearly have no idea about my parents, self esteem and families. They all try to make me do the 9-5 job when I grow up. Some financial issues too. I learn from observing anatomy, colors, style, and various techniques. Then try to use them as a guide to create my own style with my own preference.
      I learn from experiences too, and looks to my old arts to boost the mood 😂👌
      I draw everyday for atleast 2 hours when I'm lazy or don't feel like it but can be doubled up to 8 hours straight with 15 minutes breaks every 30 minutes, usually happens on holidays.
      Not all self taught artist sucks lol

    *Here is my Art Rant*
    Hate me if you want
    I get annoyed when I see digital arts with beautiful colors and all, but the characters’ anatomy are not drawn well.
    They give me a cognitive dissonance. Like I really like how the artist colors but the proportions, they are not accurate and the poses are super awkward that I don’t know how I should feel about the art.
    In my opinion, it’s ok to color your drawings but you should definitely practice anatomy too.
    *This is the hateful rant version:*
    In another words, don’t color your art if you still don’t know how to draw anatomy accurately.

    • @feralpossum2089
      @feralpossum2089 5 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      If you don't color it until you're good at anatomy then you will end up with pics that have good anatomy and weirdly bad coloring - which isn't good either tho

    • @Xingaling
      @Xingaling 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I’d say art can be good with coloring done first but I get what you’re saying. That only applies in my book if they do color art, and not like coloring line-art, like those canvases that get paint poured on them. If they have bad anatomy, then yeah fix anatomy first please and then color.

    • @AshlynnAspires
      @AshlynnAspires 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Z.G. What you are saying is right. Not every art can be perfect at first try. My suggest is that artists should take a step by step approach. Practice the anatomy first, and then move on to coloring. Yes the colors will look weird at first but if you keep practicing and keep correcting your mistakes, you could reach a professional level. My problem is that some artists skip the first step of drawing anatomy correctly and they focus more on coloring which makes their drawings look amateur.
