Man, this is perfect! A few days ago a thought popped into my head; 'Hmm, I wonder. Anything I can get into that is like Sword and Board fighting?' And here you go! Thanks for posting this and can't wait to look into it further. :)
One time in my Hapkido class we decided to take out sparing swords not too unlike these. Polyethylene covered plastic. We had trained with these before, so it was not a new thing, except someone had left his guard open a little too much and got cracked up side the head. His head split open and he had to be rushed to the ER. Point being, just because it's a "foam" sword, doesn't mean it can't hurt, or almost in this case, kill.
I think we sometimes forget that people that aren't used to being hit feel a good deal amount of pain when they are first hit by our stuff. It gives me a sense of satisfaction in some strange way.
@kazesamurai1000 U can shield kick but no flying kicks XD they actually show a little bit of shield kicking in the later parts of the series and since the shields are easy to make most of the people don't mind if it gets ripped or the foam breaks
Lmao nice. I've personally had jocks come up to me that were actually interested to know what we were doing in a friendly way, because they were astounded by the loud smacking sounds our weapons made when we hit each other, and one asked if it hurt. I told him I could show him, so I gave him a light on the arm, and he winced. He did make it to a hard swing (not full force) before he recoiled in pain and asked if we hit each other like that all the time. "Well... yeah.. we try to at least."
It's actually a fiberglass core with a polyethylene padding so we don't break each others' bones and bleed quite as often, because for most people that's not the most enjoyable part of the sport. I can already tell that trying to reason with someone as immature as to think "being cool" really matters, is going to go no where. Have a great day young sir.
@nsight123 : You're obviously forgetting that this is FOAM weapon based combat. The weapons are far lighter and have a tendency to bounce off of things. This changes everything completely from normal sword combat. It's not the same, and most of your swordsmanship practices will never work during it.
You can, if you can get in close. The problem is that I'll hit you before you close the distance, unless you also have a shield and you can close the distance fast enough. If so, then you're right, the length won't matter.
Also, simple geometry and physics here - a stab is always going to hit its mark quicker than a broad, sweeping slash, even if the slash looks cooler. Stab any dude who raises his sword for a broad cut, because it's physically impossible for him to strike you first. If they have a shield and you can condition them to circle or sidestep, even better. If you throw successive strikes at one angle, 99% of people will sidestep and you can get them to walk right into your weapon.
hey there, nice video, I have one question though, are you allowed to do shield kicks in dagorhir? the only thing that might not work with it (besides kicking someone really hard) would probably be messing up their shield. what if you rip the cloth/other thats on the front, or mess up the paint or something. Thanks for the help. (I hope its legal, I would really to kick some shields)
@MoonDragn77 Don't even really need to have a shield. If you use your other arm to protect yourself from the shot, I would gladly trade an arm in order to kill the other guy, assuming of course you kill them. But there are many different scenarios that can occur.
Is there a disadvantage if you were to use LARP foam swords for Dagorhir? I'm really new to this whole concept and I'm just looking for answers. Please be patient, thank you. Also, it is recommended to use a one-handed weapon and shield or are there people who use no shield and a two-handed weapon? Thanks.
Only thing I see wrong with this is that without ability to throw head shots, the shield guy can stand there forever holding that shield in front of him with relative safety unless he's faced with an opponent with longer weapons.
Like I said however, it happens. Just because it is covered in foam doesn't mean it can't hurt. I'm not trying to be defensive about Dag., I've never actually played it, however I do know for a fact that these kinds of "weapons" can hurt people, and, to use your term, beat the shit out of some one.
well I'd love to hear those techniques....I mean sure it's great if you get inside their range but how do you step forward faster than they step back WHILE warding off heavy blows? and if you pull that off, they still usually have a back up weapon to pull out
ty a lot but since this allmost a week i've learned a lot and also got my friends liking it (not as much as me :P ) and i was gonna make swords shilds and spears BUT i couldn't find blue foam D: before a day i thought it was insullation matirial for sound and now i think its camping pad, can you help? i'm trying my best to find it.
well most people who use the long range weapons like pole axes ect arent as good with the shorter range weapon they have, and if your any good with short range and get around the range you can usually get the kill, also its best to back them up to a wall or something. a good technique is just misdirecting their weapon and coming in for a hit.
@kazesamurai1000 from the dagorhir manual of arms "4.7.12 - Shield Kicking: Players are allowed to kick shields, provided the kicker keeps one foot on the ground. (No flying kicks!) Shield kicking must be done with regard for the safety of other fighters and will be monitored carefully by the Heralds." i'm not actually in dagorhir (yet) but i'm interested in joining :D
but i think video is not about SCA. as far i know it looks different, but i might be wrong i only wrote that i see many non-senses in this training - from perspective of few years in combat.
not only samurais in medieval europe master of sword said : if you do not move you are dead. about not moving their shelds - notice that they do not hit heads nad have large shields, so they hold shieds in 1 position and do not have need to do this but after alll - is only game for boys what they are doing
People watch too many movies. IRL, a swordfight would end in about 5 seconds with one person mortally wounded. Do NOT lead with a static foot. You don't see Fedor Emelianenko, prime Roy Jones, Anderson Silva or any elite fighter standing with both feet planted on the ground. Footwork is king, and to fight (with or without weapons) you should come from odd angles and put the force of your body into the strike. I know many LARPers would disagree, but you can learn a lot from a boxing class.
I did it for the first time today and it was fucking amazing i made a giant two handed club looking for tactics for it and also looking for others to befriend in the Jacksonville NC area i am part of a small group as it is we meet in the same park as the SCA does we are there every Saturday pls contact me for any reason on here will respond as promptly as i can thank and keep on having fun -Anthony Hutchins USMC
Although I agree completely with both your statements, I'm afraid this is a lot different from authentic medieval martial arts :/ Did love the vid though n.n
Guys i love this but there is nothing like this in my country, I would like if some1 can tell me how can i get these weapons(i was gona make wooden ones by myself but these are much better)and also the "name" of these events, the batles
LOL I am one of those Clueless Nerds!! And we kick some freaking butt dudes! And get our butts freaking kicked. I dislocated and bruised my Thumb pretty badly just last Saturday during practice. Turns out stopping a blow from a five and a half foot Claymore with your pommel of your Hand and a Half sword isnt such a good idea ;)
I wouldn't call them nerds. Nerds are the people who play LARP and end up looking like the star wars kid. Medieval Martial Arts is an art that is difficult to master.
Except it's not even close to the same thing. In a real re-enactment, you can't swing with absolute full force or you could fucking kill someone, even in real armor. It's also expensive as fuck to get tons of people to spend that much money on that type of equipment. This is meant to be accessible to many different people of different incomes. Also, I can't fight demons, orks, goblins, and drunken masters all at the same time, or at all, in a re-enactment.
If you're under 14, I think you might have to get your parents to sign a waiver...not sure. But there's probably a field near you if you're in the USA.
All im going to say, is weapon before body, keeps telegraphing your movements at a minimum. That goes for more then just sword work. Then again, im not a fan of using shields.
@nsight123 From my limited experience interacting with Dagorhir players, a significant number of them seem to be angry nerds whose default attitude is to be rude to newcomers. It's that kind of arrogance that leads them to think they can teach "advanced" (or any) melee fighting when they clearly don't know what they're doing. The guy in this video is clearly one of those clowns. Wouldn't it be fun to get these guys in a boxing ring and just throw down?
shields suck because they are slow. two swords ftw! speed is the name of the game. ...though spears do always pwn me. I freakin hate long range weapons
You do realize it's normal to be a nerd now right? You do realize that people that think calling someone a "nerd" is somehow insulting like this is the 80s are morons right? Also, come fight on the field, you'll find these "nerds" to be tougher than you presume. I've had jocks shy away because of how hard we hit.
dude no offense but this has nothing to do with mediaval martial arts ... this is just wargame search: ARMA, Fencing with Lonsword, Kohutovic Zornhau, WOMAtelevision, cateran society myarmoury . com - these can show you some mediaval martial arts

long range weapons can be an advantage for you too tho you just have to know the certain techniques in using their reach to your advantage
I think we sometimes forget that people that aren't used to being hit feel a good deal amount of pain when they are first hit by our stuff. It gives me a sense of satisfaction in some strange way.

i prefer when both opponents have the same rights
pading weapon.... the feeling of holding and figthing real weapon is, for me, priceless
I kind of expected it would be closely monitored, but anyway its still cool. thanks for the answer.
Hey, I've seen Evias in person! I recognize his shield, and I remember someone asking about Omega. Cool, I hope to learn well from this video! ~ Tonzi
@Dimitri0809 You do fight back...hit them before they hit you.
It is good sense.
ive been thinking of playing dagorhir lately how i found out about this awsome sport was in a dvd documentery called the master of the rings
@MoonDragn77
No, that's totally wrong. I can have a short weapon and I can easily get around your shield with a wrap shot.
Ahhh that changes things. I didn't know you were allowed to kick the shield. Well that would make for an interesting fight.
@nsight123 : You're obviously forgetting that this is FOAM weapon based combat. The weapons are far lighter and have a tendency to bounce off of things. no problem it took me a long time figure it out :)
that is one advantage a shield user has over a dual wielder(sp) they can defect hits slightly faster
Also, simple geometry and physics here - a stab is always going to hit its mark quicker than a broad, sweeping slash, even if the slash looks cooler. Stab any dude who raises his sword for a broad cut, because it's physically impossible for him to strike you first.

It obviously wasn't since I had something to say about it and there was no logical ending to the argument. But now there is! Huzzah!
and i gotta say i may soon be new to dagorhir but i have skills with swords and sheilds amongst my skill with all melee weapons
hey there, nice video, I have one question though, are you allowed to do shield kicks in dagorhir? the only thing that might not work with it (besides kicking someone really hard) would probably be messing up their shield. what if you rip the cloth/other thats on the front, or mess up the paint or something. It's in Somerset Pennsylvania (USA). Based on the videos I've seen, it looks like most of the people there are 16-30. I'm not sure though...
Only thing I see wrong with this is that without ability to throw head shots, the shield guy can stand there forever holding that shield in front of him with relative safety unless he's faced with an opponent with longer weapons.

I king Jeffzon will be at battle defending the pride of my poor country LorkiPork, we need some alliance
well I'd love to hear those techniques....I mean sure it's great if you get inside their range but how do you step forward faster than they step back WHILE warding off heavy blows?
and if you pull that off, they still usually have a back up weapon to pull out
it is 16-75 but if you are 14-15 you need a parent or guardian to sign a waver so ya you have it partly right
got a 2h master shield wish my crew could face yours been like 2 weeks since ive baffered
What is the diameter of the circular shields?
ty a lot but since this allmost a week i've learned a lot and also got my friends liking it (not as much as me :P ) and i was gonna make swords shilds and spears BUT i couldn't find blue foam D: before a day i thought it was insullation matirial for sound and now i think its camping pad, can you help? i'm trying my best to find it.
You'd be suprised the minimal amount of force is required to break a colar bone :D

exactly my point.
i have a question is there an age limit and if there is what is it and when do these battles happen
@kazesamurai1000 from the dagorhir manual of arms

i'm not actually in dagorhir (yet) but i'm interested in joining :D
What weapon is Magnus using? It's not a bat, and its not a sword...also how would i go about making one?
@53bahamut i know right?
What is the diameter of your round shields?
+titanscerw i honestly thought that was obvious. Out of curiosity, what gave you the impression that it was based on historical martial arts?
but i think video is not about SCA. as far i know it looks different, but i might be wrong

How does the length of time between comments dampen any validity to the argument?
its Called Dagorhir
ive had the privelege of fighting agianst magnus, the blonde guy talking in the begining of the vid.
@Corekriss Build it ;)
thanks for replying to a 6 month old comment congratulations.

this is a LARP, this one is a realistic one i belive so yeah
come out to badon hill and show off your style.

And these guys don't? People who study Western Medieval Martial Arts typically study with Arma and similar groups.
I hate people that use douchy swords like that. They're swords people, not boat paddles, pad your shit the way its supposed to be.
@nsight123 From my limited experience interacting with Dagorhir players, a significant number of them seem to be angry nerds whose default attitude is to be rude to newcomers.

what the fuck is LARP
To light and the hits to weak I mean you barely get tapped and shit people yell your hit when irl you'd be fine
uh huh
:l
i have no idea what your saying half the time, the earlier videos were done better
about the way they fight - a lot of non-sense postures and moves
no headshots no fun
dude no offense but this has nothing to do with mediaval martial arts ... this is just wargame
search: ARMA, Fencing with Lonsword, Kohutovic Zornhau, WOMAtelevision, cateran society
