- This year is both the 10th and 20th anniversary of Dale Jr.'s victories at the Daytona 500. He walks through how he took the lead from Tony Stewart, why he stopped on the front-stretch to celebrate, and how he had to drive "selfishly" to win in 2014.

I remember getting his autograph during a rain delay I said something like I was a big fan of your father but I am a bigger fan of you...and he smiled and said thanks man I appreciate that...I won't ever forget that!
I was in the garage at New Hampshire and it was after most people left the garage, and I thought I lost my change to get his autograph after Saturday practice, and as I was about to leave and head for the exit, he popped out the back of the truck and started walking to the motor home lot and I happened to walk right up to him and said hey Dale, could I get an autograph, and he was like absolutely, where you from. Quick small talk, signature and gone but it was awesome.
yeah, my experience was by chance too. I was at Daytona, and during a rain delay, I saw a driver walking toward some other fans and said to myself , "is that Dale Jr"? I had a shirt I just bought and a marker, caught him in mid stride and had a brief chat, signature, and was overwhelmed by the chance encounter! @@ryanmichaels297

I can totally feel this. I was raised in an Earnhardt house but jr was and will always be my guy. First NASCAR shirt I owed was a Dale jr acdelco taz shirt that I got at my first race when I was 8 at LVMS.
I could listen to Dale talking about side drafting forever. That was an amazing perspective articulated only the way Dale Jr could. Truly in awe from that story about battling Stewart.
He and his Dad were the only guys for awhile that figured it out. Michael Waltrip did too. Dale Jr was much more dominant for those 4 years than his Dad was in any stretch at superspeedways. Tony Stewart even said it. Love listening to him talk about it
I love listening to him on his podcast/show, but wasn't a big fan of listening to him as an analyst.
He truly is the professor of speedway racing. I love these stories.
His dad did this to Ernie Ervin at Talladega in the Diehard 500 in 1993. Dad taught him well!

My brother (who was 14 at the time) and myself (21) drove from Ohio. We sat underneath the bleachers the entire 6 hour rain delay, even whilst there were tornado warnings/watches. We had been at the track since 7 or 8am. Got to watch my childhood driver win the race. We got back to my grandmas, who lives in Lakeland, at 3am after the race. Some of the best memories I will never forget.
I just loved hearing Jr taking us through how it was from inside his car to win the 2004 Daytona 500 ! Awesome 👏👏

@@dannybernstein1088 yea I remember they always said that but some of that was attributed to him wearing that open face helmet feeling the wind on his face according to Richard Childress some years back!!They even told stories of Dale calling in on the radio that so & so is about to blow an engine and the guy did so they asked him "Dale how did you know that?" & his reply was he could smell it & another incident with his own tire going down he said he could smell it so he definitely had a special talent with heightened senses for sure!!He was "THE MAN" & will always be!!!

Best description of what side drafting is and how it works ever. Is understanding of it and having one of the best teachers ever on the subject is why he is undoubtedly one of the top 3 plate racers ever. 👍🏻

February 23 3014 i watched Dale Jr win the Daytona 500 in the maternity ward of St Peters hospital in New Brunswick NJ.
A few hours later on 2 24 14 my son was born.
He is now a quarter midget driver chasing the dream!
He doesn't believe me that I watched that race right before he was born 😆

People will never understand how big Jr was in the peak of the sport from 2000 to 2015. NASCAR was so full of great drivers and personalities back then. We used to have weekly driver pools at work. Its all corporate buddy buddy BS now. These guys raced hard and hurt feelings back then. Then they got over it and had a beer with each other and went on down the road to the next race. Miss those days

Junior has that true joy of plate tracks, and I imagine it helped him feel closer to Dad. Statistically he is right there with Jeff Gordon for average finish. Crazy that it's been 10, and 20 years.

When Dale talks about the way he was driving Daytona... I would love to see that... Right now they're flat out all the way around. Dale's tactics to get by Tony wouldn't matter today. Tony would be at such a massive disadvantage as the leader that cześć Dale wouldn't really have to think about anything. Just mash the gas and that'd be it. Not to mention the lifting off the throttle... That wouldn't matter either, because handling doesn't matter at Daytona and Talladega anymore...
Superspeedway racing is a shell of its former self
They've killed the racing there. People are complaining about there not being a speedweeks anymore and very little practice but there's no reason anymore. There's no ingenuity left, the cars are all the same. You used to be able to make changes then go out and practice and make more changes. I used to watch all the practice sessions, now I wouldn't watch them even if they had them still. The racing is horrible.
Agree that superspeedway racing is a shell of its former self, but only the leaders have it matted. 5th on back is about half throttle.
That mental thing and being in the moment is one hell of an advantage in anything in life! So yea I believe that you're right about the mentality aspect and winning mood.

In all the racing series I’ve watched, I still rank that pass on Tony as one of the most impressive, can’t even compare it too other racing series it’s like Randy Moss beating a triple team and mossing them all and then actually pulling away as he runs to the endzone
I've never watched something felt like I understood it so well. I got a memory of racing Dale on iRacing at Nashville in the street stocks. I think the two of us had like 40 some laps side by side swapping the lead and I had this plan similar to what was just explained where I knew I could beat him if I could set it up just right. I never wanted a win so bad. Unfortunately another car came into the picture and took us both out with about 15 to go if I remember correctly. That was such a good time! Glad I was able to be there in 2014 and return right as things went back to green!
I always thought going against the wall would reduce drag because that’s less air being pushed around the car but as I think about it, that air is actually being trapped. So where normally the air would be sliced and make a V shape by the nose it’s being trapped against the wall and pushes against the cabin sort of like a /-| shape causing the air that would normally wash out to the side to hit the spoiler and slow you down more. Fascinating stuff. Absolutely loved this clip and now I want to go back and watch Dale explain more of his wins.
This is the perfect video to show someone who doesn’t understand this sport or wants to know how the air works. I’ve been a fan for over 20 years and never knew there was a pocket of air on the side of the car. I just thought they were pushing air to the spoiler.
Loved both wins but he really earned it in 2014. 2004 he made it look easy.

Never fully understood how the side draft worked, but I've also never heard it explained that well
If you can imagine each car making three lines of air, one over the top hitting the spoiler, slowing the car and one on each side. If you can put your car far enough up, your side air will bounce onto their spoiler, slowing them down enough for you to get beside them. If you type it in TH-cam, you will see a ton of animations.

Me and my wife were in the hospital that day because our daughter was born. Since the race was rain delayed I got to watch it. I remember pacing back and forth in the hospital room and not being able to cheer because our daughter was asleep and other babies were on the floor!
Would it be possible somehow in the future to have an episode or clip of Dale re-watching and giving live commentary while watching that in-car feed? I think that would be brilliant content!

I love these type of stories they need to do more of them, but would make it even better is actually having him and Tony Stewart talk about this. It’s great when Junior talks to Sterling Marlin call Edwards, Matt, Keneth, and all these other guys about somebody old-school guys that were racing his dad and they talk about certain situations what they did to to win the razor make this pass or how his dad did it so on so forth I would like to have him do that, but the people he raced against in those situations and it’s great storytelling to enter the minds and listen to how they think about what they need to do when they need to do how they need to do it in that moment outstanding
I wish Dale's channel had media rights, and we could see the parts of the race as he's discussing them. Surely, NASCAR would let Dale Jr. buy media rights and be able to show clips.

I always thought that was ridiculous to say they can see the air. If you feel your car, been in the situations then you know what it feels like, you know what to expect. No need to feel, see, smell or talk to the air.
I was there for the 2014 500 and jr ran the 💩 out of his car and I believe he got trash on his grill with a few to go and made his car even better. I told guys at work b4 the race it will rain rain rain rain they will run the 500 at night and dale jr will win.. and that’s what happened I got to move my seat to better spot and watching that 88 cross the line was the coolest F thing I have ever seen a great memory!!

Since 1984, every Daytona 500 winner on the year ending in 4 has been a Chevrolet. Amongst those winners, all winning car numbers have been divisible by 4…

1994 - #4 Sterling Marlin
2004 - #8 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
2014 - #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
2024 - #24 William Byron
The drivers that had to win in 2024 to continue that streak were #8 Kyle Busch, #16 Allmendinger, #24 Byron and #48 Bowman. All 4 of those cars finished in the top 12.

I think Stewart didn’t side draft jr. because of his handling. He had to keep it either at the bottom or the outside lane. He couldn’t switch back and forth easily. I remember seeing jr ask Tony and Tony didn’t really remember, so I somehow found him talking about his car that race.
