  • Ben Whishaw speaks to Attitude about his return to the Bond franchise as Q in No Time to Die, why it would be "thrilling" to see an out gay actor like Luke Evans or Jonathan Bailey replace Daniel Craig as Bond, and whether he'd have taken the opportunity to play 007 himself.
    No Time to Die is released in UK cinemas on 30 September 2021.

      In theory yes, but in reality that's not true at all. LGBTQ actors constantly get ignored for roles because the studio's think the audience won't accept a LGBTQ actor playing a straight character. While on the other hand, they have no problem having a straight actor play a LGBTQ character. Typical Hollywood logic.

      @@AngelusHale cmon man, in the old movies Bond took advantage of women, but not in a predatorial way, he used them for information, which in itself is messed up, but again not predatorial. He was a womanizer, there is a difference. And don't you get that it would be disrespectful to the creator of Bond, Ian Fleming, to change such a major characteristic? Maybe it doesn't fit with today's climate, Bond doesn't HAVE to take advantage of women, Craig's bond barely has and he was fine, but to change his sexuality just to change it, for no real reason other than to be 'woke', isn't good either. In some ways, you have to stick to the original work. As a fan of Deadpool you must relate in some way, the way they fucked up his character in origins was atrocious, and some people feel making Bond gay, or even getting a woman to play the character, wouldn't be true to what Fleming intended and would fuck it up. Just like Hollywood did with Ghostbusters, Star Wars etc.

Davies suggests a straight man cannot play a gay character. An acting professional where, increasingly, casting directors require that only someone of a particular regional background can play someone from that area. Does this go the other way? Can a gay man play a straight man and vise versa? Can a rich entitled person play a pauper but a pauper not play the opposite? If he or she or they can afford drama school! I am intrigued as to what the feeling about this is worldwide. It seems in acting as in writing, artists and creators are being asked to narrow their Vision to only what they are. That kills art, creativity and imagination. Surely? Any thoughts?

      I think you should differientiate certain life experiences from others. Cis people really can't understand what's it like to be a trans person. In a way it's the same way with sexuality, because it is such a personal experience taht is hard tot fully comprehend/unnderstand if you haven't gone through it. Plus being poor is actually something in my opinion you can understand if you educate yourself on the subject. But people tend to have a lot of different opinions/take on this, so this is just my perspective as a bisexual cis-man. With regards to bond, i think writing unique stories with new characters that are bisexual is better than just changing exsisting characters their identity for the sake of representation. Bond is fine where he is. But a bi or a trans person playing bond is fine with me, as long as the actor can take on the role. Bit of a click baity title, but yes, a gay actor could certainly play Bond. I'm sure there'd be minor 'controversy' if an out gay actor were cast... going from the comments here (from a lot of people who clearly haven't watched the video) there'd be a lot of 'James Bond is straight' types before producers would pointlessly have to state that the character of Bond will in fact stay heterosexual, and that the actor's sexuality isn't the same as the character's he's playing.

If the gay actor were to play bond, as straight, then there shouldn't be a problem. Hes just gay outside the movie. Many lesbain women play straight women in movies. Many gay men play straight men. And straight men and women play gay characters. It happens all the time. this assumes the "best person for the job" is always getting cast / would include any variety of actors straight / lgbt+ for example, however we know the existing stigmas around lgbt+ actors means they won't get cast in specific roles because of the preexisting stigma. Ignoring these potential actors, means the "best person for the job" would probably never happen, because this means you've excluded a huge swathe of could be actors, due to their role, sexuality, etc.
      essentially, "best person for the job" isn't the reality, that's why opening up casting options would only help find new incredibly talented individuals which is what whishaw is talking about.

    • @georgekaplan4696
      @georgekaplan4696 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retroremo he's box ticking. Simply that. Fleming wrote bonds character as a red blooded male. A good actor can play any part that has been proven time after time. However the actual character is always in the audience's mind. The notion of someone who isn't straight playing bond falls down. Bond has been around for over 50 years and he was created being a ladies man. If we were watching a non straight actor kiss/romance a woman it wouldn't work cus the audience can see through this. It makes it unbelievable.

    I loved Whishaw's performance as Q until seeing this latest film. He wasn't playing Q, he was playing himself. It served no point whatsoever in making Q gay. I'm gay myself, but I despise when a known character is made gay just for the sake of it. Make a point of it, or do it to improve the story somehow. Otherwise, just leave well enough alone, or keep things ambiguous. We don't need pandering to just for the sake of it.

      I haven't watched this movie yet, but it would be ironic to note that making the Q character gay defeats the whole wanting to have a gay man play Bond! It also makes my point of how gay characters are getting thrown in our face now! I also didn't know this actor was gay until it was made a headline, because his character in the previous Bond movie or any of the others never really got into the character's personal life, which is also how it should have stayed! Q is supposed to be the gadget guy & nothing else besides comic relief as the previous actors have portrayed him!
