    Thank you for not skipping steps in showing this. I was pulling my hair out as a beginner with orvis' explanation. Finally got some knots tied in a way I can remember

    I've also watched many videos about how to use this tool with little success-until I found yours. Thank you. I agree that explaining the angles really helped.

    Thank you so much. I started fly tying a few months ago and this is something I’ve struggled with. Watched lots of videos with not much positive result but after watching this one I finally understand. You did an awesome job especially explaining the angles. Thank you.

    Thanks for posting one of the best tutorials on this subject. That said, I’d like to identify an essential step that you must use or else you have not tied a whip finish knot. You will end up with a series of multi wound half hitches. This was demonstrated years ago by a re-known Catskill fly tier, guide, caster, and fly fishing instructor.
    The step is simply this: once you begin to spin the tool around the shank of the hook, the tool must travel from Left to Right. Or, another way of say it is that the winds must go towards the eye.
    I have tried to watch every whip finish tutorial and have not seen this essential step mentioned at all.

    Thanks for such a straightforward demo. A friends grandfather passed years ago and left him his entire fly kit that could have easily filled 4-5 of those giant purple Rubbermaid tubs (think 40gal) and my friend was nice enough to set me up a starter kit from the doubles,triples,and even quadruples of tools and materials. I still had to buy a few things but not very much. Anyways the whip finishers always confused me. People would show how to use em but with two or three wrist flicks it'd be done and I couldn't see what was taking place. I'm also in crafting "self-bows" and make my own bow strings. Essentially it's the same process that's used in finishing off "serving" the nocks and center of the main string. Like a reverse wrap if you will. Except on bowstrings your dealing with larger diameter strands so it's easily doable by hand where as with flies the smaller threads,the hook,and the tight quarters make a special tool very useful. Sorry for the rant, thanks a bunch.

    I got my first white finisher today and just failed and failed. Turned out it was that the whip finisher was malformed. My hook was above the axis of the handle. It flipped funny, didn't wrap well if at all, and wouldn't wrap freely, having to be manually spun on order to turn correctly. I bent the front part of the arm until the hook sat below the axis of the handle and tried whip finishing twice to test it and it worked like it should both times. Watching this video gave me the close-up of a functioning unit to see what was wrong with mine.

    For over a decade I have tied flies completely backwards. (probably not a big deal) Relearning how to do this when you not only learned to half-hitch by hand (backwards). I should have continued to do it backwards, but old dogs can learn new tricks.

    I just received a Dr. Slick 6" whip finisher from Barlow's and watched your video to try and learn how to use the tool. I don't know what brand finisher you are using in the video, but the notch on the back end of your finisher is deeper then the notch on my Dr. Slick finisher and no matter how careful I am the thread keeps sliding out of the notch before my whip knot is finished. If you can suggest to me a better martinelli finisher, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Respectfully, George Santee, Ca

    • @paulhillar1833
      @paulhillar1833 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't make a knot, it makes a locking half hitch. As the standing thread that is running to the bobbin is held rearward, the thread feeding the whip finisher wraps around the standing thread and as you draw the whip finisher out it locks the standing thread under the wrapped thread. We use this technique when applying peep sights, soft knocks, etc. to bow strings. No knot and is strong and flat,
