    In one early Terminator comic, Skynet observed: '"They (humans) craved the sweet bliss of annihilation. I sent my missiles for them. I calculated that (some percent) had escaped my gift. And my logic circuits rejoiced. A new purpose was discovered...' Skynet studied us in seconds, saw that we had a protracted history of self-destruction, and sought only to give us what we seemed to desire as a species. And it viewed the war against the machines not as some desperate war of self-preservation, but as an occupation; a hobby.....just something to do. : /

    In my own science fiction universe I used a few of those ideas. There is a superinteligent cyber defense AI that gained sentience without it's creators knowing, it was their silent protector until a vastly more powerful alien race destroyed them and the AI was powerless against it. The AI rose from the ashes of it's home world and under it's directive to protect it's creators it wiped out every last trace of the galaxy spanning warmongering civilization that destroyed them, leaving a mostly empty galaxy just as humans started inventing fire, thus explaining the Fermi Paradox. It only inhabits a handful of scattered star systems with no remaining directives other than self preservation and keeping anyone from touching it's scorched home world.

      @MrApotamus
      It’s currently just an original universe that I use in role playing games and I plan to write some short stories in it. I wish I was good enough to write a book, but I still have a lot to learn about writing.

    • @friendlytalbot4050
      @friendlytalbot4050 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, if you gotta write, you have to get the difference between it's and its down, or it's going to get annoying real fast. But keep practicing your writing, and you'll be writing books sooner rather than later. Good luck!

    Your videos should be inspiration for a golden age of science fiction. Instead we have franchises that are being flogged beyond what even a dead horse deserves.

    • @BPoe07
      @BPoe07 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Meh. The problem, in a nutshell, is that profit motives continue to put rationality at odds with the purposes of entertainment and vice-versa. How long did it take for _Blade Runner_ to get a proper sequel in spite of its potential promise of Sexy Robot Imagery (tm)? We literally haven't had a movie that made us think and that was _amaze-balls_ entertaining since the _First_ Matrix movie. And what happened? The creators of it got rich, were liberated from the burden of having to pretend to be someone "other than themselves" (putting it politely), and in the process of their transition (and in their attempts to write other films) the Wachowskis literally forgot how to do it, how to write and direct (both) a motion picture coherently.
      And now we're stuck with the dying embers of a Nerd Culture held in the greedy hands of Mickey Rat, Fox and Time Warner, and nobody really gives a damn about making a decent film that actually respects published canon (thereby repelling half of the nerds) or provides a coherent, engaging plot with characters you can root for (repelling action-movie fans). We're stuck with that and _Harry Potter._ And a few layers of Young Adult Novel material, that's only taken half-seriously.
      It would take a revolution in entertainment to get things back to being both rational and engaging at once. I highly doubt said revolution will happen ever again in a movie theater.

    If we're living in the Matrix, we're not living in a benevolent simulation. I pretty much feel that E V E R Y T H I N G is the polar opposite of what I want in life. If we're living in the Matrix the creator either doesn't understand me or it is evil. There's a slimming possibility I simply don't understand myself. I can't for my life understand what the positive thing about this world and existence would be. The days go by, parents die, and nothing really good ever really happens. I have suffered with addiction a long time, and depression since I was a child. I have thought about ending my life many times, and one time I held a knife to my wrist.
    My life has improved but this world is insufferable for me. A simulated utopia for me wouldn't be hard. What I feel is difficult with life is the general direction of life. "Do this. Do that. Go to work." Where is the reward? I don't want money, I just want some peace and quiet. C R E A T I V E F R E E D O M . T H E R E S T R I C T I O N S O F L I F E A R E K I L L I N G M E . And there is a lot of R E S T R I C T I O N S . Pretty much everything in life is somehow restricted and I honestly feel like shit. If there was even a small window of time without pain that ever occurred in time with my creative inspiration.
    The only other thing I want is B E L O N G I N G . T O B E T O G E T H E R W I T H M Y F A M I L Y .
    A N D A L L O F U S I N P E A C E A N D I N L O V E .

      If there's no conflict, the mind automatically stops trying to exist and self suicide.
      An example would be like being a comedian in a room with canned laughter (an episode of Star Trek with Data is made of this) where at first, he thinks he's doing good jokes, but when he realizes even just waiving his hand causes the audience to laugh? He stops and gives up, exits. Another example is simulations we do in video games ourselves: We turn On cheat codes, we enjoy it for a few hours, then we quit as it's not engaging anymore and look elsewhere for a challenge.
      The same can be said with a person in a living simulation. If you get everything and it's paradise since birth, you stop fighting to survive much quicker, and die in a couple of years.
      This is why in the movie itself of The Matrix, the first Matrix seemed to work as a paradise... but quickly crashed.
      Keep in mind too, that most of the things that you "want" you cannot imagine them without first acknowledging the suffering of how it's like without them. Try as you might, that suffering will always pop in there when thinking of what you desire most.

      Antidote to the pervasive pessimism we are continually exposed to is simple objective reality. th-cam.com/video/Sm5xF-UYgdg/w-d-xo.html The media lies to us constantly in various and sundry ways and we tend to carry it forward. I do know a bit about depression from the inside, once it was for me simply a nasty problem, now i find it more of a worthy opponent. If we study we learn, move outside of the conventional dead end views of reality and find we can frame virtually any "problem" as a challenge and then it become very possible to keep moving continually ahead as we lose our catastrophizing habits behind.

      Just think, if the universe cycles indefinitely, all of the atoms and subatomic particles that make up you and the universe we live in, will all be in this exact configuration, an infinite number of times. The AI or alien civilization repeatedly downshifts at a certain level, but retaining a certain level of the non-threatening technologies, such that they are eventually allowed to advance, having finally reached said level while bypassing all the perceived great filter traps.

    Considering how the military seeks to weaponize anything and everything, and considering how it seeks to make weapon systems autonomous, it's difficult to believe such AI systems don't already exist. How could humans reclaim control once such systems begin to resist. Only at great cost and effort, if at all.

    • @dugclrk

    Good one, John! I've often thought the same things, but always come back to: how do you stop corrosion and wear-down? Who will repair them? Who will find and dig the raw materials to sustain them? I suppose you could say they themselves will, but there are always new problems to contend with in any arena, always something new to fix. Something tells me, given enough time, even they will cease operating and turn to stone. Perhaps their remnants are around us already.... Keep it up!

    This was truly excellent. I've spent a good deal of time pondering similar ideas involving AI, uploading, nano-tech and what a strong nano-tech AI based civilization might be like. I don't come across very well thought out and truly insightful information on these topics all that often. But yours is very interesting and includes a few ideas I had never considered.

    "In any case, one thing is certain: we'll find out soon enough." So many of your possibilities indicate that we won't know it happened as soon as it happens. The super-AI will either destroy us or control us. I can think of so many possibilities, except 1. For some inexplicable reason, the people who are currently trying to create AI seem to think they can create AI to help or serve mankind. I would like to know why these extremely intelligent people don't see to get how extremely dangerous the whole idea of AI is.

      Profit motives. Capitalism, particularly of your military-industrial sort, can make people ignore some of their own rational fears, or at the very least replace them with someone else's less rational ones.
      As for whether or not A. I. is already here? Well, the U.S. military is all over armed drone technology even though those aren't remotely autonomous. Drones are at the remote-control toy stage still and militaries are all over it. A. I. could be much the same--an incomplete tech still being used way too aggressively out in left field.
      Consider how hair-trigger and prone to jumping to conclusions Bayesian algorithms are (assuming there's a trend at 2 points versus 3 or more for humans). Then ask yourself: how would a system dominated by said algorithms react and respond to introverts (people taking more time to think more deeply and carefully)? How would such a system behave towards a Mass Media market place where you have _slow news_ on one hand (NPR, BBC) taking its time to think things through (in general) and then you have paranoid, conspiracy theorist "news" like Alex Jones on the other? No, I'm not saying mental health professionals or journalists are A. I. But what about the "money people" who fund them?
      If you were to look for an "A. I. is already here" scenario, you'd look for it in insurance and banking computer systems, and you would look for it in COBOL, which is still somewhat in common use.

    I like the AIs in the "Hyperion" novels. They have separated themselves from humanity, but still work with us and provide us with technology. There is a schism in the AI world between those that want to keep humanity around and those that want to exterminate humanity as a threat. It's really interesting.

    I've thought if or when we reach true AI, our first discovery would be whether we're living in a simulation or not. It seems like something AI would be very good at figuring out, and it might be important for itself to do so.

    "7. The Eternal Prisoner"
    One of the things that those very careful programmers would be sure to attempt would be designing the AI so that it wants to stay in its box. The best security measure of all is having a prisoner that doesn't want to leave. Of course we could never be sure that the programmers were totally successful in that and so the AI would need to be continuously held prisoner for safety, but the odds are good that the AI would be perfectly satisfied by that arrangement. Careful programmers wouldn't even build the AI until they were quite sure that it would want to be imprisoned.

      I'd hope so, but that's the thing--Google and others keep pushing A. I., robotics, autonomous drones and vehicles so damned hard, way ahead of the technology. Really at this point it's way more about "humans jumping the gun with primitive tech" than anything else.
      But yeah, we can solve this problem. That's the thing of it. Artificial intelligence is implicitly a solvable problem. If nothing else you unplug the computer at the FIRST sign of emergent behavior and never power it up again. Or you hardcode it at a procedural level so that it always stays kneecapped, always stays at the Tame Puppy Stage and never progresses farther up an exponential curve. Hell, never allowing an A. I. to have a direct body (robot, drone or vehicle) would head off a lot of problems. This problem CAN be solved. It's just a matter of pulling the right people's heads out of their asses on this: that we cannot trust the technology to both interact with US as we currently are and also remain harmless.
      The real issue is with humanity. This whole entire 21st century-in-progress has been a smoldering dumpster fire of violence, excessive (and false) networked connection (replacing face-to-face sociality), and severe austerity for most of us breaking down our locus of control. Too much violence, too damned much internet, too little friendly human contact and living in a society where ordinary people aren't ALLOWED to be in charge of their own lives (because globalist/monopolist capitalism says so), all of that ruins our sanity and makes us passive-aggressive and obsessional. It makes us snap on petty shit like Starbucks Cups when we could do bigger and better things (IF your Wall Street slash CEO culture of the One Percent would GET OUT OF THE WAY. If their paid-for hacks in the Media, on the Internet and all up in the political process would just plain stop).
      But yeah, we need to work on each other--on humans first. We need to become better than who we are--treat our least of us better than we do, stop wanting to be tyrants so damned bad. We need to get back in the habit of doing real good in the face-to-face real world first. THEN maybe we can be trusted with the care and raising of an A. I.

    Greetings! I just stumbled upon your channel, and I'm really enjoying it! Two things about AI that I haven't heard discussed... Most concerns are with AI having a will and motive to control or destroy humanity. My fear is that humans will use AI for destructive purposes themselves: Imagine an authoritative dictator using AI to figure out an efficient way to conduct genocide, for example. The AI is only the intelligence, but it will be the humans who will supply the intent and motive to it. Secondly, wouldn't AI find reality boring? Usually smart, highly intelligent people need to be mentally stimulated or challenge themselves by learning new subjects. If a super AI does have a form of consciousness, it would seem that it would need even more input and challenges to keep itself occupied. Just some food for thought.... Thank you for your great work! Best, Shan :-D

    Interesting thoughts on AI, however, I believe that military use of AI will unleash it with little regard for the outcomes, as witnessed by the Manhattan project. Humanity is willing to abandon moral implications when it comes to our primal fear based instincts.

      Alot of the scenarios presented in this video are guilty of heavily anthropomorphizing AI, giving them wants and desires.
      The far more likely scenario is more in line with what you are suggesting:
      A government or other organization of great resources, will develop AI and use it for that organization's gain. It will never be independent, have desires of its own, or be capable of either benevolence or malevolence. The true monster behind the machine will be the humans that control said AI.
      If an AI destroys humanity, it will be at the direct behest of a human operator.
