  • Fascinating look at the old station, passengers loading for the "last trip", walking down the line to the abandoned roundhouse and turntable, built in 1893. From being the major maintenance shops and repair area for the locomotives of the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad. The roundhouse had the capacity to hold and repair 17 engines at one time. When the Canadian National Railroad merged with the B&LE, the maintenance shop were abandoned, 2004. The turntable was supposedly still operating in 2006. Keep the history live...

    This presentation drifted me back to a rainy night in early 1950's ,lying in bed hearing a B&O Mike beginning the grade up from Brooklyn to Masonville in Southern Baltimore. The powerful exhaust was interrupted by rapid roars as the drivers spun on the wet rails and the sound again changed to labored chugs as the engineer applied sand for traction. Thank you for taking me back to that rainy winters night. Tom Triumph.

    I've been a fan of railroads since 1957 when I saw a steam loco up close. I find it sad to see old railroad things rotting over time. I am happy that many old steam locomotives are being brought back to life.

    Frank: That's no small roundhouse, it's a darn biggie! Congrats on all the excellent video grabs, including the interior of the turntable shanty with the controls . Keep up the good work. Full steam ahead !

    Wow, what a cool post. I remember walking past the roundhouse in 1979, saw a steamer inside. I was on orientation before my start of employment with m o w. Actually got to ride the transfer table once, we were picking up equipment to take south for an undercutting job.

    The high tech of its day. External combustion (steam), now internal combustion, soon, solid state ( fuel cells). Big old roundhouse in KC MO made into hipster office building. Cold be done with this one as well. Thanks, Frank, beautiful music and visuals. A drone video pass would really give a better feel for how really big roundhouses are.

    Great slideshow and video clips! Been a few years since I was in Greenville. How busy are the lines these days? I always loved seeing the Orange engines on the bridge next to Johnston Road. (I guess that was close to Mercer than Greenville, but I've been in Greenville, too.)

      Basically just one train a day now. Ore train leaves Greenville around 6:30 AM and travels down to North Bessemer in Penn Hills to drop off loaded cars for the Union Railroad, then returns with empty cars and reaches Greenville between 12:30 and 2 PM depending on if they run late or not. A new crew takes over and leaves Greenville around 4-4:30 to take the empties up to Conneaut to get loaded with ore, then they come back down to Greenville late at night/early in the morning and the process repeats. The ore trains are almost always pulled by red CN engines now. 2 orange Bessemer engines and 1 maroon engine (painted in the colors of the DMIR) are kept around for local or “miscellaneous” runs, which run sporadically.

    Nice to see a piece of history that still has it's glass (knock on wood) , here in Stockton CA,. something this wonderful would first get trashed and then burned, because of various a lack of care by the city and lack of education and homeless folks, etc . save it don't give any directions to get to it.

    They should redesign it so it would be used for diesels and sometimes steamies.

    • @ThePTBRULES
      @ThePTBRULES 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was used for Diesel, but CN has considered most of the facilities redundant since 2006. At that point the turn table was still used for turning locomotives.
