    Lots of talk on facebook about the Bessemer & Lake Eries North Bessemer yard, and since I had some footage, I thought I'd help show a different view.

    Interesting stuff! That technique of building a fill was used extensively in railroad construction “back in the day”, but typically utilized a primitive wooden trestle to support the tiny 0-4-0 steamers and dump cars used to move the dirt. There is a long fill on the Winston-Salem Southbound Ry. In my town in NC that was built this way, complete with the obligatory tunnel! I’ve got pictures from 1909 showing it under construction. But to see this done using a massive steel structure as the backbone is wild! And then to make it 6 or 7 tracks wide! Wow! Great vid and history lesson!

      @djstrains  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I grew up never knowing it was a fill until about a decade ago. When I got the drone I couldn't wait to show everyone!

      @@djstrains very cool stuff indeed! Where is this in relation to Sharon, Pa., my 1960 birthplace and home until 1970? Wish I lived closer to the B&LE, but NC is a long ways off! I wasn’t aware that CP had control of it until this video!

    As kids we used to pick up iron ore pellets between the rails on the WM, which basically ran through our back yard. They were great slingshot ammo. Never did, and still don't, know why they were purple in color.

    I used to look at that yard every time we'd go by on the turnpike to go to my grandma's house in Monroeville. I never would have guessed that it was built on top of a buried viaduct. Neat stuff.

    I used to live across the street from the engine house in North Bessemer and went to grade school at Davidson Elementary school. We used to walk the rail head for miles and then back home. Later in life I was very involved with the Railroad industry..

    I grew up in North Bessemer. My father worked at the XB Tower from the mid-50s until the early 70s, then at the roundhouse for a couple of years before retiring. He never went to work - he went to play with trains! His father was a conductor for the Pennsy line that ran along the Allegheny river north from Pittsburgh. A great uncle of mine was an engineer that worked the Pennsy Plum Creek branch, probably about the time they filled the trestle in with slag, limestone, and sand.
    I remember being very young and one day he had me sit on my bed with him and look across the Plum Creek valley. We watched a string of Texas type (2-10-4) head south, through the yard, on their way to be scrapped. I also remember my mother doing a happy dance. All the neighborhood women were happy as could be - the switch to diesel (F7s) meant no more soot dirtying the clothes hung out to dry!
    Another remembrance - the Unity branch. I was about 6 or 7 years old and my father and I caught a ride from XB to the Renton mines and back. It was a tiny switcher. The engineer let me blow the whistle and I about wet myself!

      That is so cool. The Unity branch was quite a busy line. There used to be a set of crossing signals(with bell) where it crossed Old Leechburg Rd, I believe that is the name of the road. They did tie replacement there just before I started working for the big B.

      Iron ores are typically about two-thirds iron by weight. So, if you imagine a mix of two parts iron filings to one part sand, that's probably about the density of iron ore.

    Very cool, brings back memories. I grew up in Milltown (app 1mile North), worked for the B&LE briefly, until the Mills started to close. A butcher at the Community Super Market once told me about the site of hot slag being dumped here
    At night, it glowed. Used to be a set of steps going up to the tracks to access XB tower .

    Great vid. Love the drone footage. Fyi, the old prr tunnel is sealed at the east end and has an overhead roll up door on the west end. A local contractor uses the tunnel to store his vehicles in. Also, the "miscelanious" freight in the east (middle) yard is unfortunately nothing more than storage cars. The urr has been storing unneeded cars here for a few years now. At one point there was 3 tracks worth of storage cars.

    Why not a shorter train with full cars? Love the old pictures. Very cool video DJ!

    • @tomt9543
      @tomt9543 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because every car has a “load limit”, which is typically stenciled on the car, and it doesn’t take much ore to reach that limit! The structure of the car is designed to handle the rated tonnage. Also, and to a lesser extent, are bridge tonnage ratings. You’ll often see excessive dimension loads (read heavy) being moved by “high & wide specials” dedicated to moving just that one car, but they’ll have empty spacer cars between the engines and the load to spread out the weight of those two heavy load centers when crossing bridges.

What consignments other than ore does the BLE bring to the Union RR today? Do they still bring lime for ET from Greer Limestone? Do the ship any coal or coke north? I grew up across from the yard I use to watch them load up coal in the 80's bessemer would come down with ore and take coal back up from the union rr. The old round house is still there. Plus the old back shop is still there. Wish you got the video up the other side where the tunnel is and it was a two track main into the yard. Never new about the tunnel below the tracks or the Pennsylvania rr running through. But I do remember the coal shoot being there It ran underneath unity road up to the coal tower bout 100yd or so from the tunnel. You could have parked at the fire station on leechburg rd and would have been right across from the old round house plus the middle of the yard.
