  • Sit back and enjoy the sights at this classic fly-in from 10-11 September 2022. The Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum (WAAAM) hosts this annual event as a fundraiser that is also a prime social event for pilots and enthusiasts form all over the Pacific Northwest. In addition to flying appearances by several of the museum's vast collection, other fly-in attendees and local airport residents' airplanes are seen overhead.
This year, heavy smoke from regional wildfires obscured any view of Mount Hood and cast the event in filtered light. About 200 aircraft made the flight to Hood River for the fly-in. Stars of the weekend included WAAAM's newly acquired Ford Trimotor, which flew on Saturday with the museum's Boeing Model 40 mail plane, the oldest flying Boeing aircraft.

In 1961, when I was 12 years old, my father took me to an airshow in Ontario, California. At the show, there was a beautiful 1929 Ford Trimotor. My father told me that The Trimotor was one of the first Airmail planes that he ever saw coming into Coachella, CA when he was 10 in 1926 and that he had always loved seeing and hearing those marvelous engines. Thinking about it now, more than 60 years later, I am still amazed at the beauty of that old beast. In 1961 the plane that I saw was only 32 years old. Imagine! 61 years later after that and they're still flying.... some of them closing in on being 90 years old.

It's not a try motor, it's a tri engine. Motors are electric, engines are combustible. Just thought I would point that out. Please don't take offense. Today is September 29th 2022

@@americanspirit8932 Wrong. First it’s TRI, not TRY as in your first mistake. Next, in regular English the words engine and motor have been used interchangeably and can apply to any device that converts one or more types of energy into mechanical energy. YOU are referring to some specific ENGINEERING vocabulary that separates engines into devices that burn fuels and motors into devices that use electricity, air or hydraulic pressure. Rocket MOTORS also burn solid fuel, while Rocket ENGINES burn liquid fuel. So basically, there is a wide variety of uses, and since the FORD TRI-MOTOR used and was ACCEPTED as the popular usage at the time, it applies simply by usage.

@@DoctorShocktor yeah, cars were referred to as motor cars not engine cars (which were cranked by hand in the past). Petrol engines were still "motor cars". It's just regular word usage. Ofc trains were called steam engines bc they used steam but trains can be electric or speed trains today! You're right, they're just terminologies ppl used at the time (some for obvious reasons) A train, plane or automobile had some working engine or motor. Google says the petrol cars had an engine (and "motor" is used interchageably)
      Have a nice day/evening :)

The Boeing 40C was restored by Addison Pemberton at Felts Field in Spokane. Subsequently sold to Hood River. Before he sold it, I was passenger 120 in the on-board logbook. We flew out of Felts field to a grass field where a friend of his lived. Landing on a grass field would have been what that plane normally landed on. Great experience. Thanks Addison!

The Ford Trimotor has long been one of the most fascinating aircraft for me. It just looks so different from the airliners we're used to seeing, prop or jet. A flying box is essentially what it is.
