The slope gives you more colors. A northward rise makes a darker shade and a southward rise makes a lighter shade. That gives you 3 times more colors, at the cost of a much higher building effort.

These map arts are great, but unfortunately the server will never update so the 16 bit integer limit for maps will remain in place😢
