    Gibson deserves mad credit for choosing this setting to explore; using real languages; indigenous casting; going all-out on the cinematography. That was fun! You guys are like a comedy team, and you don't even know when you're being funny. Nice one!

    I‘m Venezuelan, the ants being used to close the wounds are real. The jungles of south america have different size of ants and some are HUGE. The animal they killed in the beginning was a tapir not a ant eater :)
    I love how the enemies aknowledge that the prophecies of the little girl are coming true and that the gods are turning against them, slowly filling them up with fear. „He who darkens the sun“ (eclipse happening as he was about to be sacrificed), „he who brings the jaguar“. Well he literally brought the jaguar. Jaguars were sacred animals for them and you can hear one of them in fear, trying to apologize to their deity for killing one of it‘s son‘s (jaguar). This is a really cool movie and the soundtrack is amazing!

    Hannah absolutely nailed it on the head; the sacrifices were purely spectacle to manipulate the masses. The Mayans were so advanced that they could actually predict with great accuracy when solar eclipses were to occur so they made sure their sacrificial ceremony coincided with such an event.

      It's neither, the architecture and culture resembles the Mayans, but the Mayans were long gone before Cortez landed on the beaches of America.
      The Azteca were the ones who met the Conquistadors.
      But this is an amalgamation of the two for story purposes.

    • @Perfectly_Cromulent351
      @Perfectly_Cromulent351 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      @@gumy3939 dude, look up the production of this movie. Gibson and the other writer debated on between featuring the Aztecs or Mayans and later settled on the Maya because of their high sophistication and eventual downfall. They then spent time researching Mayan culture and then brought in an expert on the Maya language to serve as an on-set advisor. They also brought in archaeologists and professors who were experts on the Maya and spent time at Maya ruins so they could accurately depict their architecture. Even Jaguar Paw’s wife’s tattoo is Mayan; it’s a horizontal band with two dots above which was the symbol for the number “7”.

    • @Knight-Bishop
      @Knight-Bishop 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      The Maya experienced several periods and the civilization persisted for quite a long time after their technological peak, before the full-blown collapse. Those who have studied the Mayans note that construction and upkeep was more sophisticated the *older* it appeared, rather than newer. It is likely that by the end, leaders of the sort being portrayed barely understood what the more advanced ancient Mayans left them, beyond that the calendars predicted celestial movements.

    I was in Mexico in 2006 and was looking forward to visiting the pyramid temples where this shit went down for real, all access was denied to area due to there being storms and also a feature film being shot. A mini bus full of people went down to the location to see if we could catch a glimpse of anything and low and behold we see Mel Gibson and everyone went nuts, as it went quiet and he was walking away I screamed FREEDOMMmMm at the top of my voice, he spun round laughing his head off and walked all the way back over right up to us and asked who the heck was that, aye it was me in a put on Scottish accent and he proceeded to shake my hand sign my t shirt and had a chat for a good 15 minutes, he apologised for having the placed closed down for filming and arranged that the following day we would be allowed in after 6pm just as long as no pictures where taken of things that were props and set stuff. The human sacrifices presented here were not simply a method to control the people. They were also thought to appease the Mayan Gods. As I understand it most archeologists do not fully understand the full meaning of these sacrifices, but never-the-less they did occur. The Mayans were not the only tribe to do this. The Aztecs further north had their own human sacrifices. To the Spanish Conquistadors the Aztec people were seen as depraved!

    I suppose just to add more clarity to something someone already commented on, the Maya were literally the most advanced astronomers of the ancient world. Nobody rivaled their knowledge of the cosmos until Europeans invented the telescope. However, this knowledge was only held by societal elites. Most common folk were ignorant of it and that ignorance was exploited by the elite like in the way portrayed in this movie.
    I'll also point out that the Maya at no time in history ever did any kind of mass sacrificial ceremony as depicted in this film.
    They did practice human sacrifice occasionally, but they only did that with societal elites. They never went out to rural areas to kidnap hunters and farmers for sacrificing. You had to be important otherwise the gods won't value the sacrifice and usually this was the end result of a ceremonial war between different Mayan city states. Whatever leadership was out there representing his city state knew that if he lost the ceremonial war, he was getting sacrificed. It was actually regarded as a great honor. Outside that context, their blood offering rituals didn't require the person to die.
    The Aztec on the other hand... well that's whole other story let's just say.

      In mexico this is sort like a 50/50, some say its a really cool movie and like the action, some other say its a racist movie that tries to portray mexicans as savages and usually use the "historical innacuracies" argument to justify that opinion.

      In the context of the setting, where there is no modern technology, it must have been crazy for the main characters to suddenly see ships, and not have any idea what they were. The wife even acknowledged that. It must have been jarring. Also, the ships are symbolic for the fall of this civilization, and a "new beginning" which is what Jaguar alludes to. "The new world" is synonymous with Europeons. So, while it is a tiny part of the movie, the implications are large, because the Mayans do eventually disappear.
      The Jaguar was also a tiny part of the movie, but the symbolism was meaningful. Would you have gotten upset if someone acknowledged the jaguar, or did the association with Europeans make you mad.

    Well if Im not mistaken these are AZtecs in central Mexico from 14th to 16th century , Mayans are a much older (about 2000 years) civilization which was already long gone by the time Europeans rediscovered Americas. Also this Human Sacrifice thing is more a AZTEC thing. Remember this is 14th -16th centuries and this type of Sacrifice in mass scale was Somewhat unique. I am Sri Lankan Sinhalese..., and in our culture also there was savage punishments (32 ways of torture) up until 1815 before brits abolished the old legal system. But even though all that almost demonic torture...was all for Criminals and public enemies...not for normal folk... With Aztecs it was all about pleasing the GODs by sacrificing friend and foe alike..(if it came it it)..they even sacrificed Europeans mate....And this is the same culture now Mexican Gangs/Cartels like AZTECO follow...unfortunately.

    Great reaction. I am one of those who recommended this movie several times - glad you took the recommendation!
    However, if I may: you showed too little of the second part, when he is in his forrest - and especially the parts with his wife - who was EQUALLY the hero of this movie - just... differently! In fact, she is one of the most powerful female characters I have seen on film. This movie has two, parallel hero tales:
    - one outside, kinetic, in the world - the male
    - and one at the heart / hearth of the family - the female
    ...and the heroism of both is needed in order for them to survive, in the end, as a family.
    For another powerful and unique movie I would recommend Signs, an M Night Shyamalan - Mel Gibson collaboration.

    The plague was because the europeans arrived on the continent: it's attested the illness traveled faster than the Spanish themselves. So most of the time, when they arrived, the population had already been ravaged.
    The people in the old world (Afro-Eurasia), Spanish people included, were the descendants of those who survived those diseases, being gradually exposed generation after generation. The people in the new world had no such immunity, so it was kind of unavoidable that any prolonged contact would bring those diseases sooner or later. Being suddenly exposed to such deadly diseases, nowadays it's estimated that 70-80% of the population of the continent died.
