The best thing about this scene is that it exists. Anytime they let Martin Sheen play the comedy, even in the most nuanced ways (the scene with Josh late at night talking about National Parks springs to mind as well), you can tell he's having fun. Also, Toby playing along and getting the zip code just shows how much he is used to this. 😂
a.k.a. the second funniest episode-long joke in the entire series, only surpassed by the whole debacle surrounding Josh's secret plan to fight inflation.
I’ve always loved the way Toby has the presence of mind to just play along and get the zip code, even though he had no idea what was happening. That, and “apartment 23RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR”
Toby was the smartest one in the west wing in many respects, the things he reasoned out with very little information was really cool. He was the only one who called the president out, in private of course, just as you should.
I think the president calling the Butterball hotline was one of the funnier scenes on The West Wing and i'm wondering if Martin Sheen liked doing comedic scenes like that since he might not have done much comedy in his career.
I've seen this episode so many times and I've just now realized the implication that Bartlett had an open line on speakerphone to the Oval Office while other stuff was going on. Who knows what juicy white house secrets Butterball has
I wonder why the president didn't just make up some fake address in New Hampshire where he was governor and congressman. I also wonder if the woman on the other line would have noticed the phone call had a 202 area code which was Washington DC.

Maybe Toby didn't want to know what was going on and he just did the president's pleasure.

That was excellent - we should do that once a week!
The way Sheen delivered his "Nooooo" always makes me laugh a little" so authoritative, dismissive yet somehow kind.
"I do radio commercials for... products."
fun fact: that voice is Ana Gasteyer from SNL.
How’d you find out?
I never knew that. How did I never know that?
@@cf-4233 From my perspective you knew 7 days ago, if that helps ;-)
Soon enough after this we have Martin Sheen's greatest delivery... "J'accuse mon petit fromage!!!"

Best show in history

There is also a Jennie-O hotline

Probably because the scene would have been way less funny.
I believe the number is automatically blocked.
@@jamiemaclaren4187 I'd be amazed if it wasn't!
