Double screened dividing board, what it is, how it's used, how to build one

    Mardi Gras for most folks here in Southeast Louisiana means parade watching, bead catching, food eating, and maybe, the occasional sip of alcohol, but for me, it's an opportunity to work in the shop undisturbed. So, for the 4 days the shop was not being used to produce our famous caskets, it was being used to build some much needed bee equipment......again.
    On this episode of Shop Time with Mr. Ed, I'll be building the double screened dividing board that I will be using to make our splits. I have been saving the cut offs and drop offs from the plywood we use for about 4 months now, and have enough of it to build around 90 boards.
    Of course, I did not do the entire project alone. Believe it or not, Wreck it Ralph not only has master qualifications in destroying things, he's just as abled bodied in constructing things as well. With Ralph's help, we were able to size all our rough material, cut all the pieces to the proper length, and drill the entrance holes for the boards, and we did this in under 4 hours because I had to get home and bake a lasagna for mom's birthday party that night.
    Ralph was not the only help I got either. One of our brand new volunteers at St. Joseph Woodworks, Wayne, who is also a bee keeper and wood worker, asked if I could use some help assembling the boards, and I quickly accepted his offer to work. After learning all the tricks I know about putting one of these boards together, about 25 seconds, he was off to the races building our boards. By the end of the day, he had built over 50 of them.
    So. with the help of some good friends and good equipment, I was able to finish the job by Wednesday afternoon. Now, sit back, grab something to drink, and hit the play button and follow along as I build and describe double screened dividing boards. God's peace to all.
    Mr. Ed

    My hubby is a handyman. He can fix or make anything. Right now he envies your workshop and all those machines. He is a tool and die engineer. He makes jigs and fixtures and makes tools. He also loves to work with wood. You have a really great shop there. God bless you carpenter/bee keeper/bee wrangler/builder.

      Your hubby sounds like my kind of guy, someone who likes figuring things out and then making it. All I do and all that I am is but a grace of God, and I live in the hope of His mercy. Thank you for your blessing Joyce. God's peace.

      That's him. We ate at Denny's for Valentine's Day because neither of us wanted to go to a fancy place that was filled to capacity. We love breakfast for supper. He spent a half hour telling me about how he fixed a part at work. Ha Ha. I guess that's why we have been married for going on 48 years. This was HIS favorite video. Ha Ha. By the Grace of God we all make it from this day to the next. You are so handy.

      I am guessing you are a new viewer to my channel as most who watch already know I volunteer at a Benedictine monastery building caskets and taking care of their bees. Because of this fact, I have access to using the casket's tools to help with my role as the beekeeper. However, the tools I used to build the screened boards are very basic tools and most woodworkers have them.Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures, I have over 590 of them and let me know what you think. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace.

      I didn't know you built the caskets, too! You must be a very skilled woodworker. I've probably watched 2/3 of your videos and enjoyed them very much. Like a lot of people, I don't have a shop or access to table saws, routers and such. Mostly hand tools, so I'm looking for instructions along those lines. I'm sure I'll run across one eventually. Thanks for all that you do. Peace be with you, too. @@JeffHorchoff

    I HAVE SEEN ON YOU TUBE HERE THAT THERE'S MANY WAYS OF COLLECTING HONEY.. TOTALLY AMAZE ME... AS IN THE SLIDE TRAY AND DRAIN TYPE HONEY TO A GLASS JUG. AND OTHERS.. BESIDE THE ONE YOU DO... BUT VERY INTERESTING...

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each bee keeper has to decide for themselves which is the best way for them not only to keep bees, but how to harvest the honey that the bees produce. The more hives a bee keeper has the more they may need to adjust how they gather and process it. For me, I'm still in the process of figuring out which is the best way for me. Just because I do it one way in one video, does not mean that's how you'll bee seeing me do it from now on. Soon, but not yet. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    For cutting screening, I use an industrial strength paper cutter.
    You can "even" the squares to the cutting edge before dropping the cutting handle.
    Painter's tape laid out on the top of the cutting board assures consistent cuts, and reduces the scrap.
    Waste not, want not.

I build ventilation boxes with a dish feeder, was using aluminum screen but its hard to work with, going to try the PVC coated pet screen like your double screen boards. Just a though, but next time you are cutting that screen, use a sharp knife to cut the roll into appropriate width sections before unrolling it. You'll save a lot of cuts that way.

Should make a number of woodworking and painting operations smoother. I don't have any bees yet. I have empty hive boxes (new ones) but am a bit late in AZ to buy bees. I may just bait a box as in your video. 50% chance of Africanized types here which would need re-queening.

    Absolutely love these videos of you building sir. That is my other hobby, doing woodworking. I couldn't help but smile at the thought of knowing some woodworkers are cringing at the sight of a pocket hole jig....lol. Some absolutely despise the pocket hole. As a hobby woodworker I love your shop setup. Doing the split like that do you take brood from the bottom and place it in the top one? I'm new to bees. Being there is a queen in the bottom I would think they wouldn't make another for the top. Thanks for the great video Mr Ed.

    Through the use of double screened dividing board i think in time there is a possibility that bee colonies could evolve into accepting multiple mated queens.

    • @cutterleaf576
      @cutterleaf576 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ziad Natsheh i dont think you would call that evolution vs a cultural behavior development. It's not like they are physically changing to except multiple queens.

    • @Decentralized_World1
      @Decentralized_World1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evolve as in gradual development of a new behavior or mental adaptation. As for physical changes Iv'e heard of an experiment by Asian scientists in which they surgically remove the queens jaw to prevent them from physically harming each other. Not sure how the experiment went but i do believe the idea of multiple mated queens is not far fetched.

As I ended up with two Queenless boxes. Which,was not so good. As that queen would within 24 hrs lay about as many frames as you could cycle through the box. Anyway look forward to the new split video as i have approx 10 that will have to be split by mid April.

    Those cutting mats are amazing, somehow they are self healing so if you manage to cut them (which takes a lot of effort and an incredibly sharp blade) if you let it sit a few minutes it will stitch itself back together and after a while you won't even be able to tell it was cut.. Think someday we will figure out how to do that to skin.. emergency rooms will look very different in those days. It can't come soon enough.
    I've been watching the bees that have been all over the blooms on our European Ash tree and rosemary lately and they are tiny little things that look like a morph or hybrid. They have really dark abdomens with mostly black bars (some look solid black) but the light bands on them look like a green over silver gold instead of your typical orange/gold honey color. On top of that the fur between and around their wings is a green-grey color. They seem to be less than half an inch long. From my research I think they are a Carnolian hybrid species. They seem pretty docile while collecting pollen but they will buzz if you get a little too close. There must've 50-100 thousand of them in the ash tree last week. I walked outside and there was a huge roar coming from it. Our typical honey bees are over half an inch and the typical orange color. We also get HUGE bumble bees a lot and those little jeweled burrowing ones that like to make their homes inside the stems of roses.
    It's likely they are from colonies put out to pollinate the local plum/pear/apple orchards that aren't quite in bloom yet. Our house has plenty of food for them right now as we always keep humming bird feeders topped up, a fountain going, and have the ash tree, rosemary, roses, and flowering maples. In a couple months we will also have tomatoes, chrysanthemums, lobelia, pink shamrocks, African violets, irises, tiger lilies, daisies, zucchini, lemons, artichokes, pomegranates, peaches, green beans.. and for the first time this year we will have corn for them to eat on too. Oh and the neighbors also have a HUGE bottlebrush plant on our shared fence line and the bees COVER that thing, much to the happiness of the local fly catcher and phoebes.
    I think the biggest thing you'd have to worry about having a hive around here is the damn yellow jackets. Those things even make nests in my Bronco all the time, on top of anything they can squeeze into: stacks of pots, the eaves of the house, the neighbor's hedge, the hitch of the boat trailer, the roses out front... anywhere and everywhere.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

I am so happy to hear that by watching our channels it has peaked your interest in keeping bees. If I may make a suggestion, find a bee club in your area and join it now. You do not need to have bees to belong to a club, just a love for them. You will meet some really great folks who can give you valuable information on keeping bee in the area you live and that is very important. @@JeffHorchoff Thank you for your response. I have done just that. I joined a club close by and will be attending the Alabama bee keepers association annual symposium next month. I've also going to help a friend trap swarms in our area. The reason I ask about klin vs air dried was that I was told by a gentlemen that owns a saw mill that kiln dried would cup or warp more than air dried when exposed to high humidity even if painted. But I guess if you box joint, glue and nail the seams it shouldn't warp or cup too bad.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they need to share the pheromone as well as the heat for cold nights. A solid board would defeat both of those elements. There are two screens because the bees can not have physical contact, and the separation accomplishes this goal. Thanks for watching and asking. God's peace.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Th screen is inserted between the two boxes on the same hive in preparation to split the hive and make two hives from one.The purpose of the double screen is to keep the bees from being able to reach each other and not fight. Because the bees share the same queen pheromone, if the queenless hive does not produce a queen cell, the hives can be reunited and the bees will not kill each other. It is a very useful tool. Stay tuned for the video when I insert the double screened board, about 3 more weeks, and I think all your questions will be answered. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

    I'm intrested in one day doing bee keeping myself. However I swell up quite badly just from one sting so I could never work with bees without gear on unlike you and 628DirtRooster.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry to hear of your allergic reaction to bee stings, it probably would not be a good idea to keep bees if that is your condition. However, I would suggest a safe compromise, find a bee club in your area and join it. You will meet some very interesting people and learn all about keeping bees in the area you live. Let me know how thing develop, and I still hope you will continue to watch my bee adventures and leave comments. God's peace.

    Why double screen ?... isn't one screen enough ?...and what screen are you using, not metal, looks like mosquito fabric screen to me, wouldn't the bees chew thru it ?... Thanks for your reply.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The use of double screens is so the bees can not come in contact with each other when I do a vertical split. Because the boards are only used for a few weeks at most, mosquito screen works just fine. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The first day I walked into the Post Office back in 1982, I was given the name. I used it the entirety of my career, all 27 years of it, and because I liked it so much, I continued using it. Then, when I got my TH-cam channel, it was just a natural fit for me to continue using it. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

I'm just so grateful that there are folks like yourself that take their time to watch my adventures. So glad you liked the video and music as well. God's peace.

    Is the double screen just for insurance Mr Ed?

    • @danielweston9188
      @danielweston9188 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      by keeping the bees from "touching" each other to reduce "protection activity" you get a calmer hive - otherwise they will fight thought the screen.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The double screen does not allow the bees to fight with each other, they can't reach. I should have described that better. That's one of the drawbacks about being unscripted, I forget to mention important things. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

    • @JeffHorchoff

      They do not chew through the screen, but they will put wax on it. The longest the screen stays on the hive is about 4 to 5 weeks, then I split the hive. More on that later. God's peace Paul.

    Seriously you are distracting me from Scott Hendricks. I mean all this building and bee keeping is throwing me off my game. We are hitting 20F tonight with high winds and snow. I hope my bees stay warm but I know we may have lost one in the canyon. But my mind is on spring recovery. Thanks for the good tips on design. Say hi to wreckit Ralph for us all

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to admit, I like watching Scott in his shop too. I'm very thankful I do not have to contend with the weather like him or you, and I have great admiration for all bee keepers that have to deal with that NASTY cold and snow. I hope your bees do well, but remember, as long as some remain, we can recover. Hang tough and stay warm. God's peace.
