Best Trek to Machu Picchu By FAR - Salkantay Trail Documentary - Way Better than Inca Trail - Peru

  • One of the premiere hiking trails of the world, the Salkantay Trek is spectacular. This is a bucket list trip, for sure. We wanted to do the trip on our own without being a part of a larger group and without a trekking company. But there was very little information available about the trip and what to expect. This video documents our experience in Peru on this 50+ mile adventure.

    I am Peruvian from Lima, but this is one of the best videos I have seen of a route to Machu Picchu. Congratulations to you and your group. very good video quality, beautiful landscapes and very precise photos. At the same time it makes me feel very proud of my ancestors and my country. THANK YOU!!

    i did the inca trail few years back in 2008, and it was with a small guided group,. in general i thought it could easily been done in 2 days and not the 4 days we did it in, the pace was slow ,and controled but all well, it was an experience as it is.

    Amazing! This took me back to my trip up Huayna Picchu last year. I made sure to be first in line for the first time slot, and just ran/walked up as fast as I could. Got about 10 minutes alone on the top! Sometimes being an ultrarunner really pays off :) Now I want to go back and do the Salkantay Trek. Thank you so much Kerry, noone else on TH-cam makes videos like you.

    Before I started running ultras I went on a ten-day trek with my dad on the Salkantay trail. The trip was marketed by REI and operated by Mountain Lodges of Peru. We stayed at lodges that you walked past in your video. So I was in the kind of group you spoke of at along the trail. I understand your perspective, but have hope! That trip changed me and it caused me to want more trails and more adventures and was one of the things that led me to running ultras. If it weren’t for that trip I might not have found your videos and I might not have run Moab. The Salkantay Trail really is awesome, I hope to go back some day.

      Hey Wes. There are many ways to break into the longer distances, for sure. I'm happy the REI excursion got you into the game. (Nice Moab vid, bTW.) I'd like to do another Peruvian hike sometime, too. Although, I will likely still avoid getting into a group tour as I don't enjoy that as much as winging it with friends.

    This is very interesting. 50 miles hiking through canyons with houses/small villages scattered along the way. Could get lost on this route with so many trails. Surprised to see the larger modern village with train in canyon below Manchu. The girls did really well to do this hike. However, you love to do more cameras “spins” with your stick much more than needed. Gets a little annoying. Might have more likes if you had not done that. Thanks for sharing.

    Seriously? Watermelon tree? From the short glimpse the audience got of these, couldn't they be papayas? Anyway, did you see any children doing the trail? Do you think a well trained 10-year old could do it? From the height gain/distance she should be able to do that (we do 20km/800meter gain tours at home), she would only carry a very light back-pack (think water+snacks), all other stuff would be taken by the parents... any hints?

    • @FullTiltWard
      @FullTiltWard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the watermelon vine crawled up the tree, actually. A fit 10 year old should be fine, I'd think. No doubt it would be work - and the elevation makes breathing a challenge. But I'd consider bringing a kid for sure.

      @@FullTiltWard Thanks so much for the reply - as you have likely done a lot of hikes with your daughter also when she was younger, you are very trustworthy source for me (because often people tend to talk us out of things, as she is yet too young...). The altitude is taken into account, I forgot to mention that by the time we reach southern Peru, we should be well acclimated from other treks and hiking in Ecuador and northern Peru (within the previous 2-3 months), where we will repeatedly reach over 3500m (like 11.500 ft) and even up to 4000m (over 13.000ft), that should help for sure. And btw., I have seen several of your videos and they are great, no "polishing", reliable source for us to check the reality of the place, much appreciated! We had the biggest laugh when we saw you running up the Cotopaxi volcano several hours before the dawn... once you mentioned your starting time, I thought oh no, he's gonna be back down before the sun comes out!!! I was planning on running the inca trail next year so i was wondering why salkantay is better.

    • @FullTiltWard
      @FullTiltWard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Inca Trail is short - around a marathon in length - and it is super tough to get it done running as a guide is required. Inca trail is also WAY more crowded. If you want independence and remote areas of beauty, Salkantay is the call - plus no guide required. So easier to arrange and go at whatever speed you want without being subjected to the potential slowness of groups.

      If you get there early enough, like 6 in the morning, it's not bad at all. And if you are fit enough you can walk up and enjoy the view from Huayna Picchu alone for several minutes. Most tourists avoid Huayna Picchu because they hear about how steep and tough it is, but it gives you the most amazing view of Machu Picchu imaginable, not to mention the landscape around it. Lifechanging experience!

      I understand your hesitance. But the place really is extraordinary and even while we were there we had moments where we were on our own. If you get out to the edges, you can find peace.

    Love it as always. Totally agree the tourist mentality, perfectly normal humans become mindless drones on vacation wtf?! I work in the industry (HAP/Princess) and it is both mind boggling and nerve wracking trying to communicate with them! I so prefer the lessor travelled trail.

      The harder a place is to reach, the better. A significant barrier makes a place more interesting. With Machu Picchu, I think you'd be out of luck as it is such a tourist bucket list destination and access is easy with plane/train/bus getting you to the doorstep. Even a 5 mile hike in would eliminate 90% of the crowd.

      @@FullTiltWard tourists do tend to be awkwardly lazy. I delt with the tourism while backpacking in Iceland, they ruin every wilderness experience. I even have a tattoo in Icelandic that say "Keep off of the beaten trail".

    Loved the video but it would had been so so so Good if you had it mostly showed where you were going rather then having at your face. Majority time I would have loved it where you going rather then staring at your face. But good job anyhow.
