A thoroughly nice bloke and one of the most underrated Premier League goalkeepers. Rarely talked about but a fantastic shot stopper and very consistent wherever he was.
Definitely Underrated! I’d also say he’s better than Seaman as Seaman always had a better defence and Nige’s stats are similar to Seaman’s. Also if you add the clean sheets when Martyn was playing in the first division before it was the Premier League, he’d be second in clean sheets ever in the PL only behind Cech and he never had Chelsea’s Mourinho defence to help him.
@@rickymurray Seaman kept on playing way past his prime when he didn't need to because there was Nigel Martyn. And I'll never forget when Ian Walker played ahead of him!
As a Leeds fan I still can’t believe two managers put Nigel on the bench and didn’t play him, for me he’s the best keeper Leeds have ever had, plus one of the nicest guys I’ve met
I met nigle in white rose shopping centre in Leeds when I was 8 years old . He was an amazing person had lots of time for everyone my favourite keeper ever
Love this. Newcastle fan, but always loved Nigel Martyn. Great interview from the lads just letting him speak and asking the right questions at the right time. Class lads 🫡💪
Only at Everton for a few years but our fans rate him as our best keeper since Neville Southall and for his age as well, just an all around world class goalkeeper...
Was a top keeper. Southall was the best IMO. I'm a United fan and when we played Everton when I started going to the match regular mid-late 80's we always used to say we'd need 5 clear cut chances v Nev to score one. And he took the abuse about his missus like a champion, his reactions were hilarious. But Martyn was a top class keeper. better than all we had post Schmeichel and pre VDS. Doesnt get the respect he deserves as he was a mint keeper.
Big Nige' aka "Blazey" is probably the nicest guy I've met following Palace in my 40 odd years of supporting them. England were well stocked with decent keepers in the early/mid 90's, and he should have secured many more caps than he did. Looking forward to the listen.
United fan here, whenever the convo of a underrrated eleven comes up over a beer I always say Nigel Martyn, the memory plays tricks but i swear he did those clawed saves (like seaman did against sheff Utd) quite regularly, i always associated him with those anyway, great keeper and seems like an absolutely lovely bloke here. Thats a great guest to him on, glad go see my patreon money going into the pot for it.
I watch Nigel in his early years when he broke into the Bristol Rovers team and replaced Tim Carter. He was magnificent for Rovers and you could see them he was goingto have a great career. Then Crystal palace came calling and he never looked back. A proper goalkeeper like they all were back in the day. He was a special talent and without David Seaman in goal for England he'd have been England's no1 for many years. One of the best. 🙌
Great show Chaps - Nigel a legend at the Gas, used to chant Englands No 1 at every match 1988/1989. Thanks to the Tea lady for keeping on at Gerry Francis !
What a keeper. Martyn was unbelievable for Leeds. Used to love seeing him catching crosses with his knees up - used to clear players out. Quality quality keeper.
As a Leeds fan since the late 70's Nigel is the best keeper we have had in that time IMO . What I would give for him to be their now as a 25 year old .
What a great interview with a great guy. Big Nige was my goalkeeping hero. I still have a couple of his Everton and England shirts and Nike boots in my collection.
As a leeds fan I think Nigel Martyn was absolutely fantastic keeper gutted when leeds sold him leeds loss Everton gain for me he was a much better keeper than Paul Robinson even though I'm irish I think he should have taken over from David seaman years before seaman finished with England unreal shot stopper braver than seaman he was so underrated a true world class keeper
Really enjoyed that one 👏 he’s rated in the best ever Leeds 11, 10 of which were from the Revie era which gives you an indication of how well thought of he was at Leeds top professional 👏
90s prem keepers were all iconic, srnicek(?) , Schmeicel, Miklosko, Flowers, Seaman, Martyn, Lukic. Pressman, Southall! Maybe just because thats when I got into football but i loved nearly all the keepers 😂
:) They did. Some amazing keeper kits in the 90s. As a Wednesday fan, I always loved Pressman and some our our keeper kits, but also loved the Newcastle keeper kit with Newcastle Brown Ale sponsor. What a time.
Great show lads. Nige is footballing royalty to me, such an understated man for such a brilliant player. Best Goalie Leeds have ever had and will have some time.
Southampton was the other team Oldham beat alongside Villa and Liverpool. All within a week. 'The Great Escape'. Probably the most spectacular survival when looking done
this podcast really showcases how Parky is as a person; kind, but sentiments of bitterness and volatility after 20 years of a roller-coaster life. Nigel, same wife, good career, a pint and a bit of food. No dramas. they're so different.
When you find out his story and when you talk to fans who watched him, clearly he’s very underrated. Broke the record twice as the most expensive transfer for a GK in England. In Leeds and Crystal Palace’s fans all time XI. Multiple PFA team of the year appearances. Semi finals of champions league, fa cups and league cups finals.
As a supporter of English football since the 1960s, i didn't ever think in my lifetime our top leagues would ever lack really good english goalkeepers! Nigel is probably the last of the greats. Shocking how its come to this.
Loved Nigel Martyn at Leeds. Best keeper weve ever had imo. I know older fans saw Gary Sprake week in week out but hes most famous for some infamous mistakes. Spot on Galatasaray should never played that night disgraceful
What top guy. By the way you could make a long compilation of David Seaman letting in goals from shots outside the area in big games. He was past his best in 2002, although he did pull of a worldly against Sheff United in the cup sem8
A thoroughly nice bloke and one of the most underrated Premier League goalkeepers. Rarely talked about but a fantastic shot stopper and very consistent wherever he was.

@@thesatisfiedcustomer4869 Peter Schmeichel what a keeper, he scored past us once as well for Aston Villa haha
We’d never have gone down in 2004 if he was still in goal. As good as Robinson was - Martyn was the best Leeds keeper I ever saw.
Yeah. I think he would have made the difference.
Robinson had a nightmare that season. We wouldn't have got beat 6-1 at Portsmouth games like that with Nige in goal
Nigel was fantastic for us at Everton, we still rate him very highly, what a gent, glad to see he's doing well in retirement

Havnt started yet but nigel was my idol as a child. Leeds fan from birth always played in net
Best keeper we had at Everton behind the great Southall, was only at Everton for a few years towards the end of his career but what a keeper he was.
Saw him play for Bristol Rovers at Twerton Park, Bath back in the day. What a keeper!
an absolute legend my all time favourite Leeds keeper, and a genuinely nice fella

What a bloke, amazing keeper and an allround good egg.
Live Large Nige much love bruv
As a Sunderland fan he was always one of my favourite opposition (or top flight) keepers. Felt he was better than Seaman late 90s and early 00's.
That was really enjoyable and how refreshing to hear his thoughts, a true legend of the game.
One of the best pods . NM -What a very uncomplicated and very likeable bloke 😄
