  • Setting up Google Classroom for online learning is quite a bit different than the setup for a traditional, face-to-face classroom. This video will show you 5 tips for using Google Classroom for remote instruction. Here they are:
    1. Create a NEW course (don't reuse your existing course)
    2. Combine your students into one section (in most situations)
    3. Organize your content by weeks, not units (better for self-paced learning)
    4. Enable posting and commenting (it's not as scary as it sounds)
    5. Put your face in the course (you won't like it, but it's important!)

This is awesome! I have a self contained classroom (elementary) so topics work better by subject for me but I can see how organizing by weeks works better for middle and high school. YOU ROCK!

I love that you gave out all the assignments by week. My son's high school didn't do that and it made remote learning so much more challenging.

Thank you! This is very helpful! We do have to post grades, so that parents and students can see them. I used one Google classroom for all 4 sections of a class I teach, but created a spreadsheet from my attendance program, and I just jotted the grades on that, and once a week transferred them to each section in my gradebook. That way I could keep up as they completed work all week.

These are some great pointers. I totally agree with reorganizing by week, allowing kids to post and comment, and showing your face as much as possible. As a parent at home in a district with zero technology beyond email, my children have no connection to school anymore. They are just grinding out work or refusing altogether. It's unsettling. The relationships are completely ignored or gone.
