    I have the same Tohatsu 9.8A four stroke. Just got it out of a garage that it had been sitting in for years. Threw in a new impeller, oils, 9 pitch prop, plugs, and an entirely new fuel system (including carb and pump) for about $400 in total.
    Put it onto the 1436 flat bottom Jon... and it took me (215 lbs), my son and daughter (90 lbs each), my 55lb thrust trolling motor, and 100Ah Lithium battery... plus some gear... up to a little over 18mph. Should do mid-20s with just me in there.
    I bet that if the new 9.8C (fuel injected version) that just came out... really does have more torque... it would be an amazing motor. Especially with 30% better fuel economy. My 9.8A has a max burn rate of 1gal per hour according to the manual. Which means I am getting at worst 18mpg. Most likely more.

    I have the exact same 2 stroke, that 2 stroke is a very unhappy one. torque is much lower than what it should be. That white prop can be the problem. it must be too big for this motor.

      More than likely. From what I remember the prop was pretty gouged. So I def was cavitating a lot but i don’t keep the motors so putty the right prop for my boat was pointless as the next guys boat may need a different pitch to run right

    4 stroke is 209cc and the 9.8 2stroke is only 169cc. I have the 2T in a infatable suzumar 350vib and the top speed is 19knots with one person 15 knots with 2 persons and 11 with 3 persons . After that it cant go to plane so with 5 persons which is the legal limit for this in Greece you can travel with 7 knots and the throttle is only 1/4....
    In your boat i think 9.8 2 stroke cant reach its maximum rpm 5-6000rpm and for this reason you say it is slow. Maybe your boat is too heavy or you need another propeler. Nice video !!!

      @@firestorm766 yea it was def my boat and prop and what not as well. My boat is a test boat for testing the motors so it is light for the boat. Plus from what I remember the prop was a bit mangled

    i got a 1998 25hp mercury 2stroke wondering if you can do a timing setup video for that engine or a similar one. nice videos they are great keep them coming.

    Nice work. Appreciate the detailed mechanics of the work performed on each motor. What size and weight boat are you using to test the units? Also what speed did each reach in case I missed it in your review. Enjoyed the two-stroke vs four comparison of the same manufacturer.

    Just found your channel. Good to find someone else that likes to buy, refurbish and sell outboards. Just out of curiosity... Why the facemask?

      Hey appreciate the comment. I get this a lot but basically I work at a marina and I wear it to help with smoke intake cus I work on a lot of stern drives and a lot of 2 strokes. So it’s been my thing of wearing it and it hides my identity in the videos for now

    27:19 Is it normal, that it shoots water and watervapor out of this hole in the back? I have the same problem and i am wondering, whether or not i should change the thermostat. When the it opens up, the water should flow out of there. But on my outboard, there is only hot water mist coming out. It doesnt appear to overheat though so I thought maybe you have more info on if this is normal..

    • @outboardfinatic
      @outboardfinatic  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes it’s the exhaust gases. They will steam and stuff like that especially if you run it in a bucket. As long as it dosent overheat there’s no issues to worry about

      @@outboardfinatic in the meantime i brought her up on plane and went fullspeed for 20 min and it didnt overheat. You just want these to be as reliable as possible. Your comment gave me a huuuge peace of mind! Cheers!!

      @@pietlopsa9164 yup it’s always best to lake test these motors. They’ll sound perfectly fine and not overheat at home. And then when you actually put a load on the engine is when you’ll notice problems. So I’m glad to hear it worked out for you and just keep up with the routine maintenance each year and these motors will treat you very well

    How is the torque to close head bolts?

    That 2 stroke is not right, it should leave the 4 stroke for dead

    • @RossTrusler
      @RossTrusler 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't see why. It's got less power at the prop shaft, because it's compression is down from the factory more than the 4 stroke. The only thing in the 2 stroke's favour is that it weighs about 18 lbs less, and even that might be mitigated by the need to carry more fuel for the same distance.
      In the video, the 2-stroke had a hydrofoil, which tends to help with trim but depending upon a lot of factors, can reduce top speed.
      A significant issue is that the two aren't being compared with the same prop. The 4-stroke's prop appears to be in good shape, possibly OEM, the 2-stroke's prop looks like it needs some TLC.

    U never told us the speeds and the size and typ of boat

    • @outboardfinatic
      @outboardfinatic  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure as I was driving a tiller by myself and tryna record at the same time so couldn’t get speed and stuff. Was more so just making a vid of me redoing the motors. I have a 14 ft mirror craft test boat. It’s like a semi V boat that I use for testing. But idk I would guess 15 mph on the 4 stroke and maybe like 10 with the 2 stroke but honestly don’t remember it was so long ago I did these motors

    So not worth it on the 2 stroke. The cost to pay someone with experience with this unit who could fix it would be prohibitive. Unless you are absolutely mated to this motor and want to bang it up the water intake port till you die and have stupid money you have no other use for : You have lost your mind, seek help.
