So much Scooby Doo content this month. Been hearing the zombie island song all day. Only good thing about Velma is it made me see mystery incorporated again and that's how you do a dark story and Velma being a jerk but likeable Zombie island is so great.
I think technically it is the 'first' supernatural case for the entire myster gang. Most of the examples you listed off were mainly adventures with Shaggy and Scooby encountering real momsters and 13 ghosts only included Daphne along for the ride.
Good point, and when zombie island came out I remember the main Scooby Doo incarnations that would air on Cartoon Network were the ones with the whole gang (where are you, scooby movies, and pup) and not the "just Scooby and Shaggy" spinoffs where monsters were real.
One the best things about terrible remakes or reimaginings is that they remind you of how good the previous incarnations could be. I haven’t seen this movie in years, and quite frankly, I’m inspired to give it another watch. Thanks Enter! 💖
I know the first theee movies starting with Zombie Island are always held up as the Holy Trinity of Scooby Doo, but like you, I also really love Cyber Chase. I’m a sucker for the “sucked into a video game” plot, it still has an actual mystery around it and it feels like just as much a love letter to classic Scooby as the others.
If you wanna see how badly they screwed up the sequel to this, you can see my review of Return to Zombie Island here: th-cam.com/video/GlZEqFigBzU/w-d-xo.html
"It's not a mystery film, it's a horror film." WOW. How have I watched this movie so many times and never realized that? But you're right. It IS a horror film. In hindsight, one of my favorite things about Zombie Island is the reason it gives for the gang splitting up. There's no big dramatic fight. They don't all hate each other. They just grew up and their interests changed, so they all moved on to other things. That's it. And they're all thrilled when Fred sets up a big reunion for them. I love that. It's "adult," but not in the usual way that's interpreted (lots of violence and sex). It's "adult" because "losing contact with your friends from high school and missing them from time to time" is something that a lot of adults can relate to.
I recognized a quote from Steve Reviews in the opening on Velma. He gives a good overview of the show and the wider context of alleged "adult" animation. He has another insightful video on a show called Santa Inc. Judging from the material at hand, that and Velma are very much of the same cloth.
I’m so glad there’s others that like Cyber Chase, like yeah it’s flawed but I really did enjoy it when I was a kid. The idea of going into a video game world has always drawn me in, Code Lyoko for example. And I’m excited if you do an episode on Ghoul School because that was also a big favorite of mine, favorite red shirt shaggy movie. This was an excellent review, and all of those Scooby movies were great.
Full agreement on all points! Especially Ghoul School. It was kind of a strange movie compared to everything else Scooby-Doo, but it also managed to make itself one of those, "drop everything and watch," movies whenever it showed up on TV. Part of it might be nostalgia, but the fact I don't have the same nostalgia for any of the other weird 80's cartoon movies like it says something all on its own.
@@InfinityOrNone , I liked Cyber Chase Scooby-Doo film and the Code Lokyo show growing up more than Chaotix on the 4Kids Network, so I never bashed on the film like I’ve never bashed on the Star Wars Prequel films.
I’m so glad you also mentioned the “It’s the first guy you see” reputation is unearned. I was rewatching a few different Scooby Doo shows trying to get my daughter into it (which, sadly, she still does not like 2D animation no matter how much I’ve tried to get her into it), and I could correctly guess the person who did it maybe 40% of the time. And I’m being generous with that, because if I went with my first guess it was closer to 20% of the time. People being like “IT’S ALWAYS OBVIOUS” confuse me because the episodes don’t have a consistent tell. It’s not always the obscure person in the background, it’s not always the owner of the building, it’s not always the nemesis of said owner, etc. There are episodes where it *is* all those people, but never consistently enough that you can guess from the outset without actually watching the whole episode. Compare to Law and Order or some other show where you’re trying to guess “whodunnit” and it’s always either the guest star or the first person they dismiss and I can’t help but feel like people somehow conflated the two shows. Zombie Island is definitely my favorite of the classic three movies, although I need to rewatch Witches Ghost and the alien one (which I remember always loving the song in as a little kid)
Thank you so much for doing this Mr. Enter. I have loved Scooby-Doo since I was like 4 and the franchise means so much to me. I greatly appreciate you covering Zombie Island instead. I covered Velma after watching Steve Review's video because SCOOB! prior pissed me off so much and then this was the last straw. *Cyber Chase was my favorite as a kid because I only read the book versions of Zombie Island...I loved Boo Brothers and Ghoul School because I didn't have a problem with Scrappy.
Ghoul School is technically a harem anime when you think about it. At the very least, it’s a precursor to all the monster girl stuff we see today. If it even partially inspired Monster Girl Interviews or Monster High, I wouldn’t be surprised.
This is such a huge thing to see you do this. I love this. Bringing in positivity when people are being so cynical and it's such a breath of fresh air. I would LOVE to see you cover Ghoul School. That one was my childhood so much.
*I actually ❤️* Straight Outta Nowhere and Guess Who? “Scooby-Doo has been struggling after _Mystery Incorporated_ ended,” I felt the same way about Transformers after _Prime_ ended. 5:00-5:22 - this was unexpected to hear.
Critical Drinker had the funniest takedown of Velma. But going beyond that, as a guy who also grew up on the show, I never saw Daphne as a weak damsel, even watching the original. I loved this movie, and I'm glad to see it get the praise it deserves.
Dude when I was younger, I used to watch this movie on my VHS player all the time! I just love how dark it is and the themes that play in it are SO jamming! And I always loved the twist that the first time the gang encounters actual monsters (the zombies), they're actually friendly and trying to get them away from the island
Scooby Doo on Zombie Island is the reason why I'm not afraid of stuff like the Flying Monkeys or the Wonka Tunnel. Zombie Island blows both of those out of the water.
I find the irony of Velma trying to shame grown adults who watch cartoons while it itself is an adult cartoon to be astounding. By the show's own logic, no adult should be watching it. Also I'd like to point out that supposedly grown adults *WORKED* on this show. No wonder anime is destroying modern cartoons.
Actually "The Monsters are Real!" has two different meanings if you think about it. 1. It's the first time the ENTIRE gang including Fred, Velma and Daphne are seeing real monsters. 2. This one is much darker as the main villains are actual monsters both literally and figuratively as they are actual Serial Killers as opposed to the usual clowns who are just in it for money. Thus they are truly Monstrous in every sense even if you take out the supernatural angle.
Something that begins in Zombie Island and continues in Witch’s Ghost is the villains being defeated by the logic of their supernatural identity. Lena and Simone don’t meet their celestial deadline, and Thorne, already established as being part Wiccan, has to perform the spell to seal Sarah Ravencroft (and Ben in tow) back in the book. It’s not rational science or modern technology that defeats these creatures, it’s their own rules and using this to explore how Mystery Inc handle the supernatural could have been an interesting concept for future movies in the series as well a developing theme for the characters. Alas Alien Invaders returned to the humans in monster costumes with the actual aliens being passive in the plot, Cyber Chase did do the monster being real but in a technological context and Legend of the Vampire set the tone for the monsters being fake no supernatural elements.
I remember being extremely young like 3 or 4 the first time I saw this movie. I remember my daycare used to do a thing where every other Friday we'd bring movies from home for us to watch. And somebody brought this movie. Let me tell you, being 3 years old and seeing those zombie transformation scenes. Nightmares for days.
I still remember this movie when I was 6, watching that trailer and the movie itself, made me really afraid... Today, I just can't have enough of it...
Nice to see someone talking about the GOOD aspects of this franchise lately. While this movie is the gold standard for the latter films, I was pleased to see a bit of it's maturity coming into a few of movies of the 2010s. Frankencreepy and Moon Madness being good examples. Also there has been an element of real danger for Mystery Inc. going back to the first series. The Ghost Clown being a good example if you think about it.
I'm glad you're getting back into positive reviews. I'd definitely love to see a review of those 80's films: Boo Brothers, Ghoul School, and Reluctant Werewolf.
I remember watching this movie ages ago. It's a jewel in the Scooby-Doo Legacy and this along Mystery Inc. is how you approach a more mature/adult take on the franchise. I must say I also like the Live-Action movies but I know they can be controversial to say the least
I am so so so GLAD you brought up Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School!!! 😍😍😍 I was literally sitting here watching this video like 'man, I really wish he'd cover that'. Please, PLEASE cover that in a future video, it is one if my favorite Scooby-Doo movies! 💖😄
I felt that when you said you may be the only person who would admit you enjoyed Cyberchase. But you're not alone, as a massive gamer, that one really speaks to me. It had so many unique levels and concepts to it, it brought back monsters from former episodes, and the phantom virus is still one of the most dangerous characters they've faced to this day. On top of that it revealed what with would be like if each person met a clone of themselves. I promise you you're not alone in admitting loving Cyberchase. That may actually be my favorite film special they've done!
Nice to see in the midst of the current Velma fire that someone is acknowledging this movie. I used to watch it practically every day as a kid it's honestly to this day one of my favorite animated movies.
Ahh Zombie Island. Best Scooby Doo Movie by far in terms of theme and twists all around where the monsters themselves are real with the zombies and Cat Villains that seeks revenge on the pirates but then turned into pretty much real monsters themselves. Great Classic.
Dude, I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers A Pup Named Scooby Doo! I LOVED that show as a kid! And Cyber Chase is very much a Fun watch, and man.. I need to watch Zombie Island again
Pretty sure this movie was a big reason why I had a Scooby Doo timeline as a kid. Like, Pup named Scooby Doo to What's New and its movies kind of timeline. All those movies with Scooby, Scrappy, Shaggy, and no one else took place in the "wilderness years" this film established, no joke.
Og. Mystery incorporated. Zombie island. What's new Scooby Doo are the best the series has given us. Comic wise. The zombie apocalypse Scooby Doo story is also pretty good much like the political Flintstones comics
Another good example of 'pure' animated horror is 'Monster House'. It's even more intense than Paranorman, and the uncanny valley CG only makes it all the creepier.
Fun fact: I actually have taken consideration into doing a kill count on this movie. 😂 And to get a thorough count, I would be counting the following: - Human deaths - Zombie deaths - Appearance of zombies as human deaths Might be setting myself up for a pain in the ass in terms of counting, might make the mistake of double counting some kills, and it could be a weird gender breakdown of the victims, but if I'm motivated, I'll be game. Lol
Ah great! Thanks to watching this vid, that song's in my head again. _You hear the screeching of an owl_ _You hear wind begin to howl_ _You know there's zombies on the prowl_ _AND IT'S TERROR TIME AGAIN!_ _They've got you running through the night_ _IT'S TERROR TIME AGAIN!_ _And you just might die of fright_ _It's a terrifying time!_
Thank you for breaking the trend. Also, I think this is a good time to highly suggest seeing Scooby Doo Camp Scare. That's my personal favorite Scooby-Doo film.
I didn't even realize there WAS a Red Shirt Shaggy time, until Cyber Chase. Despite the fact that I had seen Ghoul School and the Wacky Racers sponsored by Dracula. It just sort of blended into the background, and I was so used to Shaggy always wearing green.
The one good thing about Velma: We all get to reflect on the good iterations of Scooby Doo, like Zombie Island and Mystery Incorporated. Or the original cartoon. Or Ghoul School. Or What's New Scooby-Doo. Or that one comic that was a sorts decent Adult Scooby Doo story.
Not to mention that one crossover episode of Supernatural which I consider to be a really damn good way to have Scooby Doo work in a more adult sense. The sad thing is, there was a part of me that wanted Velma to turn out to be a good show in spite of everything shown and while I don't hate it as much as other people, jesus fucking christ Velma is a terrible show, its like Daria but they removed everything that made Daria actually a good show and replaced it with some of the most cringey dialogue imaginable.
@@KhaosAdmiral My dear Patrick, we all hope that at some point with every show. Honestly, I was hoping for Santa Inc not to suck The Little Drummer Boy's Animals' dicks like it was trying to literally suck chrome off a trailer hitch, and yet that blew up in my face. Heck, I was actually hoping for Rings of Power to at least be a decent 6/10, same with Halo, Seasons 3 & 4 of Castlevania, and, yes, Velma too. The problem is that these creators never really cared about making a good adaptation of these things; they only cared about making THEIR version of the story, with any care of second guessing themselves or even paying some respect to something they didn't make going right out the window.
@@b3rz3rk3r9 I'm aware that people are usually creatively bankrupt when it comes to handling IP, Really I think a lot ofmy personal issues with Velma stem from the fact that at its core, its overall attitude of the show is extremely unpleasant and overly mean-spirited which squanders everything that could be even considered potentially interesting by stomping on it until it died.
@Patrick Condron I would agree, and somewhat do, but mean-spirited entertainment can be good. Personally, I think the biggest issues is that it's TOO mean-spirited and that it doesn't try to marry its concepts together effectively. It's trying to be an Adult comedy, a Teen Drama and a Comedy all at the same time without trying to get any of them to mesh properly. It's less like mixing dried cherries and lemon jelly onto a keylime pie, and more like pouring oil, water and vinegar in the sane bottle and not realizing that it won't mix with all the shaking power in the world.

Zombie island is so great.
You forgot Scrap- *SHOT*
SHAGGY *AND* SCOOBY; _NO ONE ELSE!_
Yeah, you could argue those series and films are confined to their own little weird pocket universe.
@GYu Tp Scrappy saved the franchise. People just hate him nowadays.
Especially since it was the first time they encountered real monsters while doing the mystery formula. The Scrappy Era was very light on mysteries.
One the best things about terrible remakes or reimaginings is that they remind you of how good the previous incarnations could be.
I haven’t seen this movie in years, and quite frankly, I’m inspired to give it another watch. Thanks Enter! 💖
I rewatched Zombie Island in 2021, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it holds up.
Zombie Island and Mystery Incorporated were examples of darker takes on Scooby Doo done right.
This also gave us the song, "It's Terror Time Again". A song didn't have go that hard; but we're glad it did.
Zombie Island and Alien Invaders were my absolute favorite. That and Scooby-Doo and Ghoul School. Brings back some major nostalgia.
Those three are among my favorite Scooby-Doo movies (the latter even being my absolute favorite).
If you wanna see how badly they screwed up the sequel to this, you can see my review of Return to Zombie Island here: th-cam.com/video/GlZEqFigBzU/w-d-xo.html
0:46, HOLY MOLY!!
Never thought there'd be THAT many videos on HBO Max's VELMA right now.
0:51, Nostalgia Critic video cameo!
I still love this movie to this day. I definitely would consider it the best Scooby-Doo movie of all-time, whether animated or real life.
So glad that you're doing admirable animations again
And let's not forget the sound track. "The Ghost is Here" and "Terror Time Again" by Skycycle slap super hard.
In all my years, I never thought my liking of Cyber Chase was related to my loving of Code Lyoko
I like how you show the many reviewers talking about Velma at the beginning. Happy to see you are just as sick hearing about ti constantly as I am.
I'm so glad Admirable Animation is back! And what a movie to cover too lol
Me 2.
I guess Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost, & Alien Invaders are the 3 fan-favorite Scooby-Doo movies.
As someone who loved Scooby and the Cyber Chase as a kid, I'm happy to see someone say that despite its problems they still enjoyed the movie.
The trailer to "Zombie Island" gave me the chills when I was a kid.
The very definition of "Hated by all, and yet viewed by all".
I gave this video a Like before it even started!
'On Zombie Island' truly is well- deserving of an Admirable Animation!
The werecat villains are some of the darkest Scooby-Doo doo villains around as well as their tragic backstory.
To this day, Zombie Island remains one of my favorite Scooby Doo films, though it's "sequel" is still a bit hit or miss
Excuse me witches ghost is magic those spells slap and tim curry
Sometimes sequels are not good
@@charlieclark9552 I meant "Return to Zombie Island" Witch's Ghost, Alien Invaders, and Cyberchase are all in my favorites
@@beybladegeekusa7340 oh yeah that movie can go screw itself
@@beybladegeekusa7340 Return to Zombie Island (as well as Curse of the 13th Ghost) is absolute garbage.
Anyone else here loved 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo? Feels like we're sleeping on that one a bit.
Fun fact, a Pup Named Scooby Doo and Tiny Toons adventures were I think written or subsequently made by the same guy.
So that’s cool.
The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries had upped Daphne's persona way before this movie. She was even a reporter in that series.
Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island: Hella Underrated
Return To Zombie Island: Forgettable AF
This And Witch's Ghost Are Some Of My Favorite Memories From When I Was Younger. Thanks For Bring Them Back And Not Just Tearing Down Velma.
Funny enough scooby doo on zombie island was my introduction to scooby too when I was 4-5 years old and it scared the shit outta me
I remember watching this movie ages ago.
This is by far one of the best Scooby-Doo movies 💝
Dude, I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers A Pup Named Scooby Doo! I LOVED that show as a kid!
And Cyber Chase is very much a Fun watch, and man.. I need to watch Zombie Island again
Pretty sure this movie was a big reason why I had a Scooby Doo timeline as a kid.
Like, Pup named Scooby Doo to What's New and its movies kind of timeline. All those movies with Scooby, Scrappy, Shaggy, and no one else took place in the "wilderness years" this film established, no joke.
I also like Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase, it was my actual first exposure to the franchise
Well Scooby-Doo did teach us to stay away from shady real estate agents.
Velma, the Scooby-Doo production where Terror Time Again should actually be played.
I always remember that Cam Clarke (Leonardo) was voicing the gardener.
Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost and Ghoul School were always my favorite Scooby Doo movies; I watched them whenever they were on Cartoon Network.
Perhaps we where too hard on Be Cool Scooby-Doo
Og. Mystery incorporated. Zombie island. What's new Scooby Doo are the best the series has given us.
Comic wise. The zombie apocalypse Scooby Doo story is also pretty good much like the political Flintstones comics
I love Zombie Island, but my favorite is Witch's Ghost, it's my go to Halloween/Fall film
This is a good Scooby-Doo movie! In fact, I still have it on VHS 📼!!!
Mystery Incorporated is what I’m watching instead of Velma! Happy to see other people watch other stuff too.
Honestly thank you for reminding everyone why Scooby Doo got to be good during the 2000 and part of the early 2010
Another good example of 'pure' animated horror is 'Monster House'. It's even more intense than Paranorman, and the uncanny valley CG only makes it all the creepier.
Fun fact: I actually have taken consideration into doing a kill count on this movie. 😂 And to get a thorough count, I would be counting the following:
- Human deaths
- Zombie deaths
- Appearance of zombies as human deaths
Might be setting myself up for a pain in the ass in terms of counting, might make the mistake of double counting some kills, and it could be a weird gender breakdown of the victims, but if I'm motivated, I'll be game. Lol
A great movie. I still love it. Seeing this the first time at 5 was a blast and I just turned 30 this past Tuesday.
Velma makes Be Cool, Scooby Doo looks awesome!
Ah great! Thanks to watching this vid, that song's in my head again.
_You hear the screeching of an owl_
_You hear wind begin to howl_
_You know there's zombies on the prowl_
_AND IT'S TERROR TIME AGAIN!_
_They've got you running through the night_
_IT'S TERROR TIME AGAIN!_
_And you just might die of fright_
_It's a terrifying time!_
Thank you for breaking the trend. Also, I think this is a good time to highly suggest seeing Scooby Doo Camp Scare. That's my personal favorite Scooby-Doo film.
I still appreciate Scooby Doo and the Monster of Mexico. Wholesomeness is under appreciated.
I didn't even realize there WAS a Red Shirt Shaggy time, until Cyber Chase. Despite the fact that I had seen Ghoul School and the Wacky Racers sponsored by Dracula. It just sort of blended into the background, and I was so used to Shaggy always wearing green.
WE NEED A GHOUL SCHOOL SEQUEL
I remember when Scooby once wore a red collar too.
Bold move to go back to the first straight to DVD Scooby Doo movie instead of hopping on the hate-wagon.
There’s nothing new to say about it, it’s been talked about so much everything has been said.
It definitely wasn't the first supernatural event in the Scooby doo universe but it's the first serious supernatural event
The one good thing about Velma:
We all get to reflect on the good iterations of Scooby Doo, like Zombie Island and Mystery Incorporated.
