I was one of the game's avid supporters since day one! I'm still trying to get this game as I grew up with SFEX2 Plus & when I saw the original trailer back in April Fools' Day 2017 I screamed! Also can we get more Tekken vids please?
Couple of things that need to be pointed out here. This isn't street fighting EX4. This is more accurately, Fighting Layer 2. A "sequel" of sorts to a game that Arika made in 1998, that feature only original Arika based characters who appeared more frequently in the EX series.
There are too many songs on that game that still stands out to this day to me. Rising Dragoon, Spinning Bird, Strange Sunset; my #1 is Sakura Mankai! Just LOVE that soundtrack
I just bought this game a few weeks ago. I love it and I am so happy to find out the background of this title. I am a huge fan of the original EX games and own SF EX+ Alpha and EX3. I still play them today. Thank you brotha Top Hat!
I watched many videos of Ex Layer but I could not see the Mega/Ultra moves from Ex series which you could perform when three bars full, so these moves are not in Ex Layer?
I love this game so much! They should bring back the characters from the original fighting layer. And some new characters definitely. I really hope they do make a sequel

This was a day-one preorder for me. As soon, as the preorder went live, I jumped on it. I had never been so excited to support a game and I still feels like this blows street fighter v out of the water. I hope against hope that arika gets to keep going

I just got it on the Switch. It is way better than MK 11, imo. It has a handful of very interesting characters, which is impressive, because I am quite picky :P
"It all began as an April fools joke.." Crazy, and gutsy. FEXL is a fascinating title. I did play some of the past games. But recent entry has me surprised, and humbled. It does have a unique learning curve, classic or progressive with control scheme. It's awesome to see it return. The battle system though is neat, how it's interchangeable, depending on character selected. I really dig the visual design, it's sharp and colourful. Soundtrack is alright. It may be its own thing, but it's a title worth playing. Would be neat to explore a story mode. The artwork is pretty cool (looks 10x better than sfv*cough*) As for what it does deliver, its an awesome title worth playing.

You picked a good time to upload this cuz Arika announced a new Fighting EX Layer game for Switch that has new mechanics. I recently gotten this game back in the Holidays of 2020. Sadly it came with an expired redemption code for Hokuto so i wasnt able to get her sadly. This game here is PURE fun. I love the roster choices since we have almost all of the EX characters (Cycloid and Ace are still missing) so all we need are the OG Fighting Layer characters. The music is good and original (Unlike a certain fighting game series everyone loves since a certain company never gives those fighters new theme songs...... Im talking about Capcom. Not to say the music is bad of course but come one. Give us new character themes lol) I will agree there are a lack of game modes for single players, but my (small) issues are the fact that Kumite mode (Survival mode) is only accessible in Training Mode instead of it being it's own mode. Perhaps we can have both real and training versions of Kumite/Survival? There's no "No Gougi" mode or option, you don't have control of how much damage you can give and take, you can't choose the number of rounds, how much time you want to have, and there's no gallery mode for art, photos, and music. i would like it too if Arika did add in the option to fight the AI in offline VS mode as well. It would also help if Arika were able to include the OG Fighting Layer in the game since that game hasn't had a home release (Keeping in mind Namco published the game so there may be deals that need to be worked out). It would also be nice to add bonus stages too. Like the ones from Fighting Layer. Aside those issues this is a really GREAT game, made by a small dev studio. I'm just glad to see Arika come back to the Fighting Genre in some way so i hope Arika will come back making more games in the future. Especially the Tetris Grand Master and Technic games. EDIT: I keep noticing people are calling this Street Fighter EX4. Although this game is a spiritual successor to both SFEX and Fighting Layer (More so directly succeeding that one), this is NOT Street Fighter EX4. This game here is its own thing. Capcom has nothing to do with Fighting EX Layer and does not own nothing in the game. Arika had always owned all these properties in FEXL. Essentially, since Arika owns all the stuff in FEXL you could now pretty much at this point consider Street Fighter EX as a crossover series between Street Fighter and Arika's original characters with the Street Fighter Brand slapped on it. (Sort of how like BlazBlue does).
The basic modes that EVERY fighting game should have: - Arcade (which is the Story) - Versus - Training - Time Attack (Arcade with time) - Survival ( Arcade with recoverable health) - Gallery Mode Those are the basics of basic for replayability in a fighting game. Depending on the fighting game franchise they should have different types of challenging modes.
You forgot to mention the Versus mode should have VS AI option too. Cuz FEXL doesnt sadly. EDIT: By the way, SO GLAD im not the only one who wants Survival, Time Attack, and Gallery Mode. I also want FEXL to have the classic TEam Battle Mode and bonus stages like they did in Street fighter EX and Fighting Layer.

I fucken hate that approach, sure it's business but they should exploit fans, include all the stuff your game SHOULD have from the beginning and then make something completely new to sell
@@etrotm12thebluewolf15 It has versus cpu mode when you go to practice mode and select it. Meaning proper win/lose rounds against the AI. Survival (kunite) mode is also under practice mode. I don't know why they placed those two modes under Practice.
I loved the gameplay of SF EX+ alpha and tried EX 2 and EX 3. Never tried EX4 but it seems interesting. Nice to know that Nishitani is behind the EX series. thanks for the video.
I played alot of street fighter ex series in the late 90’s when I was in the military. I just downloaded fighting ex layer on my Nintendo switch yesterday and I am not disappointed. I’ve had alot of fun relearning my favorite characters and I look forward to sinking more hours into the game. It’s sad that this game didn’t get as much recognition and momentum in the FGC. For those of us that remember the original series, this is a dream come true 18 years in the making. Thanks for covering the history of this wonderful fighting game.

I think it's well within the realms of possibility that Fighting EX Layer could get some form of representation in Smash Ultimate, whether it's a Mii Brawler costume of Skullomania or some free dlc Spirits. (and I was thinking this even before the recent announcement of FEL's Switch port)
I absolutely loved Fighting EX Layer. It needs more single player content sure, but I still love the game regardless. I'm really surprised you didn't mention the recent announcement of Fighting EX Layer Another Dash for the Switch, but it was a fantastic video regardless!
Found this game on PlayStation plus. I remember playing Street Fighter EX as a kid. This video just helped jog my memory with Skullo and DDark. Glad I purchased the game outside of ps plus. Great addition to my fighting collection.
Street fighter ex was always one of my favourite SF games, and EX Layer did not disappoint. It exudes personality, i love its art, graphics and characters. I only wish it had a story mode.

Yeah they changed his story in Fighting EX Layer. And at this point since Arika owns those characters SFEX is essentially a crossover series with Street Fighter slapped on it. Pretty much like BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle is. (Theres also another fighting game Arc System Works made for the PS2 called Sengoku Basara Cross which ironically isn't a crossover)

What I hated about this game in release was the same thing I hate about street fighter x Tekken. I like fighting games to be simple. Pick your character, kick your opponent's ass, rinse, repeat. I don't need to build a deck to give me an edge since I'd rather fight with skill instead of bells and whistles.

I was shocked and surprised at EX Layer being its own thing! Luckily, Araki was in great hands with the staff, loyal fan base since the EX series, and crazy cool characters!
Still haven't played this one but I remember vividly the first one Fighting Layer released in 98 having an amazing soundtrack I believe it was composed by the same person that did the Street Fighter EX osts, I use to listen to the music out of game that's how good it was. I gotta play this sequel sometime.
The Gougi is basically a preloaded version of SF x Tekken's gem system, and its just as bad, so bad that people started to lose interest on EX Layer after a while I guess Arika eventually acknowledged it too, since the upcoming Switch port completely removes the Gougi and replaced it with a universal dash & guard cancel feature Another problem with EX Layer is it lost a big chunk of its "function" characters, and did nothing to replace them, particularly charge characters like Guile, Chun Li, Vega, and Bison, leaving Cracker Jack as the only charge character iirc?
Gougi doesn't work like Gems & works more like CVS2 Grooves. Even people who compete in tournaments agree its nothing like gems. Some people's waning interests is because instead of learning Gougi, they immediately dismissed it, like you, because they assume 'well it looks like gems, so it must be gems.'
I remember playing ex3 alot with my brothers growing up.When ex fighting layer came out I knew I had to buy it....Wished they kept the meteor finishers 😢
It's interesting to me that somewhere around the road it became a 2D fighter It's disappointing to hear they kept asking Capcom to do a new game but they kept saying no to the point where they had to do one without Capcom
I played the hell out of SFEX. One major complaint I have with the series is how they nerfed Guile from SFEX2 to SFEX2+a. Guile had his Sonic Hurricane super from MvC, but removed it. This pissed me off so much I didn't have interest in SFEX3. I did buy FEXL for PS4 when it came out and had tons of fun with it. I hope PS4 gets the update.

It didn't make too many sales to call it a huge commercial success, but it was able to make enough money for Arika to make a PC Port, a mobile version of the game, some DLC characters (Four of them were free DLC Patches two while one you had to pay for. Another DLC fighter you gotta pay for two since Arika for some reason made Hokuto, the protagonist, and one of the first revealed fighters for this game, a pay DLC). Now with all he money that Arika made from other stuff like Tetris 99 for example, they also had enough to make a Switch port of FEXL. So it did decent, but could have had higher sales too.
I was sad when Fighting EX Layer didn't feature the original Fighting Layer cast, like Tetsuo Kato, George Jensent, or Hong Gilsun. I had the rare privilege of playing a Fighting Layer cabinet in the late 90's. That game was hardcore.
Correction: Fighting EX Layer is better known as Fighting Layer 2. Capcom and Arika didn't get to work on an official Street Fighter EX4 yet. Fighting EX Layer is part of the Fighting Layer series.
Only in name, the lack of Fighting Layer characters probably means those are properties of Bandai Namco now Fighting Layer itself is basically an SFEX version of Tekken
From what I heard ARIKA and Capcom had a falling out during the 2000s after ex3, they wanted to absorb all of EX, the fact that it didn't happen must mean Capcom was trying to scam ARIKA, after EX Layer released it seems like Capcom is showing signs of "respect" by acknowledging EX characters existence with costumes in SFV
Didn't Capcom make rival schools too? I used to love that game. It's such an awesome underrated fighting game. I was hoping that there would be more in that series,but sadly there has only been that 1 game. Unless there were sequels that I didn't know about. If not,then I still wish that they would make another.
Man, I loved Fighting Layer in arcade and was very disapointing to not see a single feature from that game in this other that what was already in SFEX.
Street Fighter EX series still best Street Fighter Games Especially SF EX Plus Alpa 3 on a complete different Level than the other SF games. There needs to be a Collab again - SF EX 4 This game needs more Characters and Meteor Combos tho
Top Hat Gaming Man, just one correction, this is the 5th game on the series, not the 4th one as you state at 13:04 . Check About FIGHT LAYER from Arcade, it was the 3rd game, released at december 1998, same year as SF EX 2.
I hate that the 3DS model got canned cause the character designs were great and were much more faithful to EX1plusA’s character designs especially Allen’s

Skullomania, Doctrine Dark and Sharon I want playable in a main Street Fighter game.

Apparently they announced a new version coming to Switch last week that changes up the mechanics

Yeah they changed his story in Fighting EX Layer. And at this point since Arika owns those characters SFEX is essentially a crossover series with Street Fighter slapped on it. Pretty much like BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle is. (Theres also another fighting game Arc System Works made for the PS2 called Sengoku Basara Cross which ironically isn't a crossover)

They Should added more ARIKA characters from the first FIGHTING LAYER game from arcade. Also more Fatal Fury Characters, as Mai, Geese, Duck , Andy , Billy, Mary, Yamazaki, Jubei, Bear, Tung , Jennet, Alfred, Xiangfei and Joe
The game would be instead titled Fatal Fury VS Fighting Layer

Until today I have been hoping for an SF Alpha 3 remake/remaster; Imagine if SF Alpha 3 but redrawn like SF HD, where Udon did the art work? That would be sooo sick or SF Alpha 3 using the SF5 engine.

What I hated about this game in release was the same thing I hate about street fighter x Tekken. I like fighting games to be simple. Pick your character, kick your opponent's ass, rinse, repeat. I don't need to build a deck to give me an edge since I'd rather fight with skill instead of bells and whistles.
But you use your decision-making brain to skillfully choose the Gems/Gougi Deck to better win. I understand if that is too difficult for some.

I was shocked and surprised at EX Layer being its own thing! Luckily, Araki was in great hands with the staff, loyal fan base since the EX series, and crazy cool characters!
Still haven't played this one but I remember vividly the first one Fighting Layer released in 98 having an amazing soundtrack I believe it was composed by the same person that did the Street Fighter EX osts, I use to listen to the music out of game that's how good it was. I gotta play this sequel sometime.

The Gougi is basically a preloaded version of SF x Tekken's gem system, and its just as bad, so bad that people started to lose interest on EX Layer after a while
I guess Arika eventually acknowledged it too, since the upcoming Switch port completely removes the Gougi and replaced it with a universal dash & guard cancel feature
Another problem with EX Layer is it lost a big chunk of its "function" characters, and did nothing to replace them, particularly charge characters like Guile, Chun Li, Vega, and Bison, leaving Cracker Jack as the only charge character iirc?
Gougi doesn't work like Gems & works more like CVS2 Grooves. Even people who compete in tournaments agree its nothing like gems. Some people's waning interests is because instead of learning Gougi, they immediately dismissed it, like you, because they assume 'well it looks like gems, so it must be gems.'
I remember playing ex3 alot with my brothers growing up.When ex fighting layer came out I knew I had to buy it....Wished they kept the meteor finishers 😢

Fighting ex layer is a good game and has a pretty decent and enjoyable arcade mode(the ai doesn't cheat a lot).Skullomania is awesome....

I played the hell out of SFEX. One major complaint I have with the series is how they nerfed Guile from SFEX2 to SFEX2+a. Guile had his Sonic Hurricane super from MvC, but removed it. This pissed me off so much I didn't have interest in SFEX3.
I did buy FEXL for PS4 when it came out and had tons of fun with it. I hope PS4 gets the update.

It didn't make too many sales to call it a huge commercial success, but it was able to make enough money for Arika to make a PC Port, a mobile version of the game, some DLC characters (Four of them were free DLC Patches two while one you had to pay for. Another DLC fighter you gotta pay for two since Arika for some reason made Hokuto, the protagonist, and one of the first revealed fighters for this game, a pay DLC). Now with all he money that Arika made from other stuff like Tetris 99 for example, they also had enough to make a Switch port of FEXL. So it did decent, but could have had higher sales too.
I was sad when Fighting EX Layer didn't feature the original Fighting Layer cast, like Tetsuo Kato, George Jensent, or Hong Gilsun. I had the rare privilege of playing a Fighting Layer cabinet in the late 90's. That game was hardcore.

Correction: Fighting EX Layer is better known as Fighting Layer 2. Capcom and Arika didn't get to work on an official Street Fighter EX4 yet. Fighting EX Layer is part of the Fighting Layer series.
Only in name, the lack of Fighting Layer characters probably means those are properties of Bandai Namco now

From what I heard ARIKA and Capcom had a falling out during the 2000s after ex3, they wanted to absorb all of EX, the fact that it didn't happen must mean Capcom was trying to scam ARIKA, after EX Layer released it seems like Capcom is showing signs of "respect" by acknowledging EX characters existence with costumes in SFV

Didn't Capcom make rival schools too? I used to love that game. It's such an awesome underrated fighting game. I was hoping that there would be more in that series,but sadly there has only been that 1 game. Unless there were sequels that I didn't know about. If not,then I still wish that they would make another.
There is a Rival School 2 on the Dreamcast. Released as Project Justice in the west. I uploaded a video on it a couple of years ago.
Rival school was really fun and different than most fighting games, I miss the 90s...
