I disagree with the one law man that said, that inmate would’ve “waltzed out of Alcatraz blindfolded.”.. he might’ve been able to get beyond the walls, but getting off the island and across the Bay was a whole different story. That prison was like a triathlon, you had to master 3 different sports to get out of that thing. It’s a great tour if you’re ever in the area. Sawing bars, climbing walls, jumping fences… fine, where’s your boat? The “makeshift rafts” is where most escapes fell apart if they made it that far. Buckys story has got to be the strangest thing for someone who was getting out in 72 hours.
I’ll never forget when Bucky escaped. He was hiding out around where I live. People were wearing shirts and had signs in their yards saying “Run Bucky Run”. It was a very sad time though. My second cousin got killed during that time because he was on a atv and cops shot him because he took off on his atv and a cop grabbed the back of it when he took off and instead of letting go he held on and got dragged and then they shot him.

Being from Philly, all my memorable/ historical prison escape stories come from our own Eastern State prison, upstate NY and Alcatraz, which we visited on a trip out west to San Fran. I’ve (and the Army) dragged my husband around the world to satiate my obsession with history/ haunts and crime.
The first episode I ever watched I was totally confused because I like to listen to things like this while doing other things, but I can’t do that with this show or l’ll lose track of the story.
