3 Day Kayak Camping the Devils River

  • I had to do a re-upload of our 3 day Devils River trip. Apparently where we stayed night 2 was not on the river gradient so be careful.
    A few of the folks from W.E.T headed down to the Devil's River located in Southwest Texas. We took I-10 about 10 miles past Kerrville to Hwy 41 West. About 1.5 to 2 hours later we made it to our outfitters, Amistad Expeditions. A week before the trip we received a generous amount of rain which made for easy paddling with basically no scraping. This river is one of the most desolate, and clear rivers in Texas with great rapids, waterfalls, and great large and small-mouth fishing. With almost 100% of the land surrounding the river being private, finding a luxury camping spot can be difficult. Two paddle-in campsites are available on the west bank of the Devils River in Val Verde County but are $5 a person. Mile 12 at 29.90534, -101.044391 and mile 20 at 29.828833, - 101.025809. All other camping must be done on the river gradient boundary or islands.

    Great video, looks like an awesome trip, I just got a Ascend 128T Yak Power for Christmas and will take it on its maiden voyage this Sunday, 1-6-19.
    One little editing tip if I may...
    The difference in volume of talking and music is such that I had to increase volume to hear talking, then the music comes on really loud and I had to monitor the volume throughout the video. If you could keep it balanced, it would be helpful. That may be easier said than done, but just a thought.

      People make fun of me for wearing my jacket when paddling. But where I paddle the river is 5-6 meters deep at shallowest point. In these waters here you could stand at all times. I wouldnt wear a jacket there too...

    My trip on the Devils is rapidly approaching and I can't WAIT. Any advice on gear or tackle that you can give? We've done multiple night trips on the Guad and Buffalo but this just seems like it's going to be more epic. Where did y'all take out?

    • @WET_TV
      @WET_TV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's awesome! Such an amazing trip. Throw things that are natural. Water is super clear so things like jigs, senkos, cranks. We did 15 miles and got out at I believe Del Norte. It's the last kayak take out before you start heading towards the lake. Depending on water levels you may be dragging your kayak so just keep that in mind. Make sure you have a rope, or leash to help drag. For gear, just make sure you have a solid sleeping mat and a solid tent. Weather can get real weird out there outta nowhere. I woke up 1 morning with about an inch of water in parts of my tent. Let me know if you have any other questions

    • @paddlepedalproductions5452
      @paddlepedalproductions5452 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WET_TV Thanks for this! Yeah, we are good on tents and sleeping bags. I am considering bringing a lightweight camp cot. Trying to weigh comfort vs weight. I fully expect us to have to drag some. Our Llano river trip was like that. Appreciate your information! Keep the content coming, hit me up if you're ever interested in some fishing in the Houston area.

    • @WET_TV

      Welcome to the kayaking club! So the Devil's River is not something you'd want to paddle down and back up river. We did 15 miles over 3 days. There are occasions where we paddle up river 2 or 3 miles and just turn around. Most times we'll have a truck parked down river at a get out spot and shuttle back to the start.

      Ahh so jealous! I hope you have an awesome time. If you want to avoid dehydrated meals, I'd suggest freezing your meat to help keep other items cold as well while on the water. I ate sausages and soup for dinner, and oatmeal for breakfast. Preseasoned chicken breast or steaks could also be pretty simple. Never really had "lunch" as we were busy fishing. I did snack on beef jerky, nuts, and tuna packets throughout the day though. freeze water in big blocks instead of using regular ice as blocks take longer to melt. Freeze your water bottles as well. I kept beer cold till the last day which is always nice ;).

    I’d never voluntarily want to camp Devil’s river purely because of all of the regulatory BS. No open fires, no alcohol, no dispersed camping. All campsite camping has to have a permit(paid for) and be scheduled in advance. Bro miss me with all of that. All of those regulations wouldn’t be a big deal if they were loosely enforced but from what I understand they are strictly enforced. …if I’m going river camping I’m going to relax not to get harassed/cited by a park ranger. I’ll stick to places that don’t have those kinds of rules and are loose with the ones they do have. It’s shame because it looks nice… but I know I wouldn’t enjoy the experience because I’d be hung up the whole time with “well I’d like to do a b or c but none of that is allowed.
