- As Summer draws to a close, my quest to explore as many hidden gem seasides as I can continues today as I wander through the tranquil and beautiful Kent coastal town, Deal.
In this 4K scenic walking tour, I start off checking out the pier, beach and historic castle of Deal before continuing down the coast to the peaceful Walmer and finishing in Kingsdown, which is also the location of my favourite coastal pub The Zetland Arms.
I even catch a glimpse of a cheeky seal who comes to say hello!
If you haven’t been before, all will be revealed in today’s travel vlog so stick around and find out why this is a great place to go in Kent!

I grew up in the 1950s and couldn't have lived in a better place. One of the things I like about it was the council's resistance to change, so it remains the quirky appealing place it is today.
Some of the free standing coffee shops were public toilets!
The amusement arcade on the corner and the Italian coffee shop the beach parlour were there when I was a kid.
My friend's father lived in a mobile home behind the pier and was in charge of its construction. We played with a lot of the timber and fixtures laying around.
The Royal Marines school of music played a big part in everyone's life. We got reveille in the morning and last post at night.
If the lifeboat had to be launched for a vessel in distress, a maroon was fired high in the sky that went off with a bang to summon the volunteer crew. Many towns people also rushed to the Walmer lifeboat station to watch the launch.
Deal is and was a fantastic place to grow up. I now live in the Philippines and still miss the place 50 plus years later. 0:02
Thanks so much for your comment, it’s great to hear you grew up there and I really enjoy reading about memories. I’m glad to hear it hasn’t changed too much in 50 years!
Hello Jack
I have watched a few of your videos over recent months. I like them very much and your recent video amused me as I know Deal and many of the places you mention. I find the videos are balanced with a combination of information, humour and fun. Keep them coming please. Hopefully you will be the next Simon Reeve. I’m a fan of him too.
Thank you
Christine
Thanks so much Christine for your very kind words!! Really appreciate it 😁I am also hoping to become Simon Reeve one day 🤪
I’m so glad you liked our little hidden gem - it’s a wonderful place to live.
I can imagine! Defo somewhere I can see myself moving to one day 😁
Sorry Hidden lol??! 😅
Sea looks filthy
Ignore the negative comments it looks gorgeous!
@@martinpowell5769
That sea just looks normal like other beaches on a cloudy day. Visit your nearest specsavers
That amusements was open until about 5 years or so ago. Used to take my kids in there for the 20p rides. It was great. Best coffee - Hog & Bean or Pop Up Cafe. You missed out The Lighthouse Pub on Walmer Green :) And just near there, Eva's - AMAZING freshly prepared food. The food at Hut 55 is also incredible.
Hey thanks so much for your helpful comment. My sister lives in Deal now so I’ll definitely be visiting again in the next few months 😁
Love the footage! OMG yeah you did get most of your humour from Charles Hawtry 😂
Ha ha ha since filming this I’ve actually been watching loads of Carry On films
@@jackryanmiller good lad!
Hi Jack
Another amazing video and the way you deliver your commentary with humour and information is only unique to you. Your videos are definitely very stylish and I am really am enjoying them because they are easy listening and it’s almost like in Deal with you.
I’m looking forward to your next destination. Don’t get your pipe and slippers out yet Jack. There’s plenty more places to be seen, but a beer at the local pubs or at every local pub is a nice idea. Thanks Jack once again.
Thanks so much for the lovely comment Donna, always great to get such nice feedback. Although I think I will be getting out my pipe and slippers for the winter 😂😂😂
Hi! New area for me 😊
Hey, not many people have heard of it unless you live in Kent but it’s so amazing 😄
Deal and Walmer both have train station. It is a bit of a walk to the sea front from Walmer and Deal isn't that far from the sea front. Deal does have a theater called The Astor Theatre, is a small theater along side with a bar and cafe.
I am intrigued with your comment regarding sitting on a house balcony - "can you imagine sitting here watching the sunset with your morning paper" . The error being, that balcony faces east, the sunset is in the west, so is behind the house, and sets in the evening, therefore your morning paper should have been read hours before. I think a combination of hot sun and Cappuccino got the better of you here, Jack my friend. All in all, a very pleasant presentation covering this walk, well done.
That analysis of my balcony comment really made me chuckle ha ha thanks very much 😁
I spent some lovely times over many years at my great aunt's house on Wellington Parade from the seventies onwards. We watched the sea in all its moods, and the Goodwin Sands with its old shipwreck at low tide. Much of the time you could see over to France, and at night the lights of Calais. It could be difficult getting a good BBC signal both for radio and television, as the French signal was so strong. One stormy winter's night, the sea came up under the shingle and flooded the basement of the house. Whenever staying in one of those downstairs bedrooms, we subsequently got used to placing our shoes up on a chair in case of such a repeat wet surprise during very stormy weather. The shingle beaçh was later excavated and flood barriers fitted. Day trips to Calais from Dover kept the drinks cabinet well stocked. Very happy memories there!
Thanks so much for your comment, really love reading about people’s memories from these places and I’m so jealous that your great aunt had one of those houses on Wellington parade, one of my favourite coastal stretches in Kent !
Plot twist: You were the ruffian on the pier. Looks like a really nice peaceful area!
Ha ha ha, yeh man literally like paradise in terms of no one else being there 😆
yeah, it's a brilliant town and only discovered myself a few years ago
It is a fantastic town, can’t wait to get back
Do love piers that still have the fishing platform at seaward end, especially there where you can see right through, really like the chippy opposite pier for an eat in fish supper
I’ll give that chippy a go next time I’m there!
Thinking of moving to Deal, was torn between Folkestone and The Thanet towns, but looked into Deal and it’s in between both! Best of both towns and has its own vibe, and it’s quieter too, Margate is cool but can be crowded
Yep that’s definitely right, and my sister actually moved to Deal last year and absolutely loves it!
@@jackryanmiller I bet she loves it, your video really helped confirm I’m making the right decision. Thank you for your reply 😊
Love your content ❤️
Thanks so much Becky!
If I didn't live here I would definitely aspire to.
Let me know when you come back, we can share a beer and fish and chips. I can give you more info.
Even the Queen Mother loved staying here every year. I know she told me.
Thanks a lot mate !
Just watched your broadstairs video to go on to find your deal one. I also lived in deal for 7 years until 2005. The restaurant on end of pier is very good. The regency I believe was a cinema at one time but it was a bingo hall when I lived there not sure when it closed..the royal was also a cinema , club and a snooker place not sure when it closed. Nice town to live. Used to have a good high street. At back of deal u can access the bettshanger country park which is the site of an old colliery .
Thanks so much! My sister actually moved to Deal last year so I’m going to be a much more regular visitor now! The country park sounds great so I’ll be sure to have a look
So my ancestors would have come from Deal, if I got the story right. So in the 1820s and 1860s, British settlers to South Africa would have come from Deal, I think left from Portsmouth and landed in Port Elizabeth. There’s an industrial area on the coast of Port Wlizabeth called Deal Party. And then there was a town called Walmer which later became part of Port Elizabeth when it grew and melded together. I grew up in the now suburb of Walmer so this is definitely on the list!
That is so interesting and so amazing you know that history, I had literally no idea. Definitely check it out, it’s so easy to get to from London too
I hope to visit there next year!!
I would definitely recommend it 😁
Ah this place looks lovely
It really is!
Excellent travel video 👍 As for humour, wasn't Norman Wisdom from Deal, Kent?
Hey thanks so much! I didn’t know that but that would explain why there’s a pub in Deal called The Norman Wisdom 😁
The big building on wellington parade used to be a care home, it’s been under construction for a few years now…
Ooh I wonder what it will turn into. Maybe just a massive house
@@jackryanmiller I remember there being some objections as it was going to be several apartments, but you could be right. I’ll let you know if it ever gets finished!
Came to Deal last summer, absolute gem of a town. Big shout out to the Port Arms, highly recommended if you are hungry
Ooh lovely I’m going back in a few months so will be sure to check it out 🤩
Jack Deal and Walmer is an amazing place. They filmed Liar in Deal. Jack have you been to Broadstairs in Kent 🤔, my favourite place 👍👍😁
Thanks very much, I haven’t been to Broadstairs however that is 100% on my list for this year
@@jackryanmiller @jackryanmiller Viking Bay is amazing and Morelli's ice cream is my favourite and Chiappini's another great ice cream parlour and coffee shop. You will love Broadstairs 👍😁 if you drive from Margate past Cliftonville going towards Joss Bay you will pass a great pub overlooking the sea at Kingsgate bay called the Captain Digby 👍👍😁
Hi should have started at Sandown castle 😊
I’ve never actually been as far as Sandown! Next time though 😄
@@jackryanmillerit’s what’s left of it ruins but planted by locals and coffee bar, also you can walk from there the other way past golf course to sandwich bay 😊
the giraffe cafe
I bet someone was so disappointed that public facility is closed on Christmas day.
I’m going to spend this Christmas there
@jackryanmiller between Christmas eve and boxing day 😂😂
Could you include places to eat and drink please ?
Yes I usually do in my videos to a certain extent 😄although I mainly focus on the pubs rather than restaurants. The Zetland Arms that I show in this video does amazing food, I’ve had lunch there several times 😀
@@jackryanmiller it’s a good video, I’ve spent a few afternoons in deal but only ever had fish n chips but seen there are a few modern food places appearing and wondered if there was any recommendations
That Caffè on the Green Once used to be toilets (",)
Ha ha love it 😆
1:56 What kind of shop doesn't have Dr Pepper? Always reminds me of ski-ing holidays...
Finally someone got the reference 😂😂
@@jackryanmiller It's very difficult to get a Peep Show reference past me 😄
@@jackryanmiller I need to watch all of your videos intently now, and see if there are any more British comedy Easter eggs 😄
@@MrPhil1503 ha ha I must be honest, I think there are at least a few other peep show quotes dotted around 😁
Any massage Parlours 😜😛
Ha ha not that I saw but I’ll have a closer look when I go back 🥸
I have visited it. No disrespect intended but no reason to go back
That is fair enough 😄
Let them all move down,London suburb
You said exactly the same things about BROADSTAIRS - these places are not the good -absolute ball shitter
Not a fan of the Kent coast I assume William? 😂
Ooooh another cool little tour! Really love these! You’ve had some amazing weather for your trips, will you be doing trips all year round too, even when the darker days are upon us?
Thanks sooo much! It was just lucky the week I had off work filming these 😂but I will be doing some autumn vlogs and a few festive ones planned 😁
