This was a 3.5 for me. I find the spanish inquisition very interesting. I liked the last half of the book way better than the first half. It was a very slow start and i definitely think it could've been more better focused on some characters and left off some of the others. I didn’t find Valentina that interesting. I like Hualit and really wanted her to escape.

I definitely wanted Hualit to escape and her reunited with our main character at the end. That would have made such a good ending.
It definitely was very very slow at the beginning but I'm glad you at least liked the back half of the book.

Since the book was announced, it was my most anticipated book release and was very excited to read it. I did the audiobook because it's easier for me. I love Leigh Bardugo and the title/cover had me so excited for this. The book was such a slog, and I didn't feel like it reached its full potential. The romance was meh, but I suppose for the ending they wanted to tie it in for her to want him to stay alive. The magic definitely could have been better explained and his magic was a mystery. It was like they just gave cliff notes of his past and left it at that. Valentina did have redemption, but she really annoyed me in the beginning because all she wanted was to show off and bring her level of popularity within the elite higher by using Lucia. The ending was good, but I shouldn't have to wait until the last few chapters to enjoy a book. This is my least liked book by this author and was left disappointed. I will not recommend anyone to read it. I gave it 3 ⭐

Oh no 😭😭Yeah I still feel like it was a disappointment compared to her other books. I feel like this book almost needed to be a whole series to explain everyones backstories and the magic, but I feel like it would have made for a super boring series if it was drawn out any more than it already felt.
