What's amazing about this clip is John Ward's matter-of-fact call of Stoerner's fumble. It was a massive moment and yet Ward is strangely unemotional about it, as if the play had occurred in, say, the 2nd quarter and not with just over 2 minutes remaining, giving undefeated Tennessee an out-of-nowhere chance to win the game--which they did go on to win. In any event, Ward was a legendary announcer for the Vols--and all UT fans will miss him. RIP.
@patricksmith5282 LOL. 98 will always have an asterisk. Fatman could only beat a coach with a 3rd string here. Had a losing record to 19 coaches (with probably all starting QBs).
No doubt you need to catch some breaks in order to go undefeated and win a national championship. Here’s a thought: let’s say the fumble doesn’t occur and Arkansas beats Tennessee 24-22. That means Arkansas would have faced Tennessee in a rematch in the SEC Championship Game. In this scenario, could Tennessee have still played themselves into the BCS title game with one loss, if they beat Arkansas in the SEC championship game? It seems plausible given the UCLA and K State upsets the last week of the 1998 season and there were no other BCS conference champions who finished undefeated in 1998.
We had....Syracuse (FG at the buzzer to win), FLA (missed FG in OT), come from behind to beat Miss St, then survived FSU. Definitely a team of destiny.
I was at this game. I was a sophomore at UT. Four of us went, including my future finance. After the fourth down, she and our other friend left. Me and my buddy stayed, in the rain. We were soaked and miserable. But we stayed…
Easy: Because in order to be “down”, his knee has to touch the ground (and in the pros, he’s got to be touched by a defender). The ball simply touching the ground does not end the play. Once he lets go of the ball, it is ruled a fumble.
wow. Just realized this. TN has been ranked * #1 just 5 weeks in the last 64 years (2020-64=1956). The week of this game and the rest of the season in 98, and * #1 just 6 weeks back to 1951. That's 69 years. And people refer to this program as blue blood. Seems like that description should have an expiration date on it.

He figured TN would find some way to F up and not convert. One guards their emotions after to many.
Classic John Ward, "what did Tennessee do?, nothing fancy, give the ball to number 20, go that way". Love it
Al Wilson, such a beast...His older brother was a beast in high school
This just proves that The Vols are the best football team of all time #GoVols
Long Live the memory of Arkansas Brandon Burlsworth. #77 and Go Buckeyes.
What's amazing is we never got to 2nd down after the Stoerner fumble......think about that!! Just total domination from the oline!!!
after that game I knew the title would be ours..
Well, I didn't. I figured our guys would get to the title game, but I was sure they'd lose to FSU. They didn't. Happy ending.
@@michaellawson6298 They clearly would have lost had Winke played. TN faced a 3rd string QB with 1.5 games experience and won by a mere 7 points.
@@robjohnson8861well, Weinke didn’t play, Tennessee won, tough shit.

Every national championship team has a game or two like this that you just have to survive and find a way to win.

I guarantee he is being interviewed at the downtown Calhoun's on the TN river. I've eaten there a few times.
a lot of good players in orange, chill bumbs
ITS FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE!
Chills
3:54 How is he not whistled down here? The ball is clearly in his hand and it touches the ground.
