  • This is a review of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 which was developed by Neversoft, published by Activision and released in 2001 for the PS2, GameCube, Xbox and PC. There was also a version of the game released on the PS1 and N64 but it's a very downgraded version and isn't the focus of today's video. There's also the portable versions on the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance but they're pretty much completely different games.
    With Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 being one of the best game sequels ever made in my opinion, how would the third entry into the series compare? Well... It turns out that Pro Skater 3 is even better and is one of my favourite games ever made.

    You've got to be joking about the PS1 port! It is THPS2 with reverts. It was not butchered like the PS1 port of 4. I really really love the PS1 Version of THPS3, you should never ever skip this!

      I've actually got the PS1 version of THPS3 so I should really complete it at some point. I have very briefly tried it before but I remember not enjoying it because I was constantly comparing it to the PS2 version haha! I do also want to try out the PS1 version of THPS4 even if it is bad!

    THPS3 is definitly my favorite of the series, it just is so jam packed full of content and it just gets so much out of it all. Great brand new levels, some returning classic ones, the whole original pro roster from the first two games alongside the addition of bam, a bunch of great secret skaters, a great create a skater that can even be used on pros and some secret skaters, a kick ass soundtrack, a great create a park, and just so much more. Plus not to mention if you got other platform versions you would get even more content, with oil rig and x-ray on the xbox, doom guy and the control zone online gamemode on pc, and even the japan ps2 version had some extra exclusive skaters too. Its just such a jam packed and great game, but even more then that all the content it does pack in is polished to a tee.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same! THPS3 has got to be one of my favourite games. Like you say, every single detail is just so highly polished that it's easy to see why it was one of the highest rated games of all time. They took everything from the previous games and perfected it with this one. That's probably why THPS4 and the later games had to be quite different! Plus the multiplayer in this game is some of the most fun I've ever had in split screen!
      Maybe one day we'll see a remake like THPS 1 & 2 got, then more people will be able to experience it!

      @@PixelPursuit Yeah its most likely why they had to change it up, and yeah the multiplayer in the tony hawk games were always a blast but specially in thps3.
      Also yeah I hope so too, I actually went into 1+2 hoping/thinking we were going to get thps3 dlc cause of the games movesets and cause the game was made with thps4 in mind so 3/4 levels seemed like they would have come at some point. But with VV being merged I think it won't happen for a while if ever. Shame too cause while i've never been a person who cared too much about graphics, I really wanted to see the thps3 levels in HD, specially skater island, since not only is it my favorite level in the whole series, but cause I think a HD version would be a great tribute to the actual park its based on since it was closed a couple years after thps3 came out.

    • @PixelPursuit

      Oh for sure, the Tony Hawk games in general have got to be one of the best series for multiplayer ever made. Even the later ones like American Wasteland had some awesome multiplayer mode. That one even had a co-op classic career mode!
      It makes me so mad that they merged VV into Blizzard... Such a waste considering their work on reviving both Crash Bandicoot and Pro Skater. Hopefully we'll see a new Pro Skater game developed by Beenox or Toys for Bob in the future. I think Beenox have just been working on Call of Duty for a while now though... Still with the whole Microsoft buyout, almost any developer could end up working on any of these series now!
      Yeah! Some of the other levels from THPS3 have never been seen in another entry ever again right? I'm pretty sure Foundry, Suburbia and Cruise Ship aren't in any others too! It'd be awesome to see all of them again.

    • @Iron_Hawk
      @Iron_Hawk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PixelPursuit Yep! They did add some more fun modes later on too so they still were improving on it as well, and yeah the co-op classic mode thing in thaw was pretty cool, its just a shame the classic mode in that game was lacking, if the two collectors edition levels were in all versions and new york and streets didn't get cut it would have been much better imo.
      Yeah its so stupid that they merged them after making such a great remake, specially given how rushed it was, but my guess is activison didn't make as much return as they wanted so they just closed vv to recoupe more money or something, but yeah with the microsoft buyout hopefully thps will have more chances, given microsoft cares about franchises that don't make them billions unlike acti who just cares about cod and crash cause they print money for days.
      Yep, Canada, Airport, and L.A. in THUG2 are the only console re-apperances of THPS3 levels at all in official games. The gba version of THUG2 has THPS3 suburbia from the gba THPS3 port, but idk how much that counts since it was only in the gba version. Oil Rig I guess technically did see itself remade in thaw as well. Every other thps3 level though, foundry, rio, suburbia, skater island, tokyo, and cruise ship all stand only in the original game.

    I'm about to state a VERY unpopular opinion...
    I prefer the PS1 version.
    I liked the engine and graphics of THPS 2 BETTER and I think the THPS3 on PS1 pushes the console to it's limits very well.
    PS2 looks nice but I respect Shaba Games effort.
    Also I like to use Mirror mode as well as Sim mode to do a Mario kart style super challenge after 100% to double my gameplay time.
    Hell it's even fun to do the Disco Mode on Tokyo for a rainbow road type deal.
    Also I have a bit of bias as I grew up with it, and as a devote protestant, demoness kinda bothers me....
    I hope you understand my opinions

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to admit, I have very little experience with the PS1 version. I actually have it but I've never played it all too much. I've always just seen it as being completely inferior to the PS2 version but maybe I should give it more of a chance! I'd like to try THPS4 on PS1 as well!
      That's actually a good idea using the cheats to make challenge runs for yourself!
      Yeah it is a little bit weird having the demoness randomly appear there in the roster. I don't mind it but I get why you'd be a bit put off!

      @@PixelPursuit the PS1 version of Pro Skater 3 is a hidden gem
      Pro Skater 4.... No.... It's not.
      At all.... Most of the challenges in THPS4 PS1 are hi scores and collect stuff.... Repeated over and over 24 times in a stage.
      All you get is a Clown called Little Person and a Little Big World kitchen stage.
      Play THPS3 PS1 it's great but THPS4 is mediocre and even THPS 1 is better than it

      Haha, that almost makes me want to play THPS4 even more!

  • @Sam501UK

    3:45 your skits always get a good laugh out of me! Seriously though, you've really convinced me to give this game a try! I've never played these Tony Hawks games, the closest I came to these was Simpsons Skateboarding.. the less said about that game the better.
    Would you say this is the best game to start with? Or is there a remastered version available? It looks a lot of fun!

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Either start with this one or Pro Skater 1 + 2 on current and last gen systems. Both are good jumping in points because they include all of the trick combos that the series is famous for and also both feature tutorials too! THPS 3 is definitely my favourite though, the maps here are just incredible.
      There's no remastered version of it though and it's particularly annoying because they were working on a remake of 3 + 4 but it was cancelled despite 1 + 2 doing pretty well. I would have loved to have seen 3 + 4 in HD, they're by far the ones I'm most familiar with!
      I've actually never played The Simpsons Skateboarding but I've heard very bad things haha!

      This is an excellent choice to get properly into the series! If you’re unfamiliar with the controls or advanced stuff it even has a tutorial for you to try out. Even after playing the games released after this one, I still think THPS3 is the best one!

      @PixelPursuit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At least we finally got the chance to revert in all of the Pro Skater 1 and 2 levels with the new remake! I want to sort of "hold it" with an "objection" since 60 FPS? Unless there's a pseudo NTSC-mode or something (60Hz), it's not higher than 50 FPS. (Also to note that I've heard PS1 games are technically 50 or 60 according to region, but they have this odd specific thing that limits the frames to 25 or 30 anyway, but they run inside 50 or 60 frames. Wouldn't be that surprised if it is the case with PS2 as well, though something in me doubts it.)

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm... I'm not 100% sure. I know that it definitely isn't 30fps but I suppose it is possible that it's 50fps and not 60. Either way though it doesn't really matter, what's important it that it's smooth to play and never drops frames either! :)

    • @PSXDRIVERPLAYERBSTH
      @PSXDRIVERPLAYERBSTH 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dunno how games are made to be these days, but with PS2, this PAL and NTSC difference was still in effect - PAL is 50Hz, thus being 50FPS technically at all times (interlacing is one reason for 25FPS, though mostly with video) while NTSC is 60Hz, which means 60FPS at all times (though with 30FPS some cases happen at 29,97 so I guess some is 59,94, but for simplicity, let's say full 60FPS). I dunno how PAL PS2 games are with their framerate, it's either 25 or 50. With PS1 I've heard it's 25 inside 50, and if there's other issues with smoothness, even less than that.

    I tried American Wasteland not too long ago and didn't really like it. It made me conclude that perhaps Tony Hawk games were not my thing, but this game looks a lot more appealing. I know I loved Pro Skater 4 as a kid.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah American Wasteland isn't a very good one to start with because it's actually very different to the others, particularly the earlier ones. Plus there's a hell of a lot going on with the parkour, riding different vehicles and the whole park building aspect.
      Pro Skater 3 is probably the best one to start with because all of the moves that have become the standard are present, it has a proper tutorial mode to learn everything and it also happens to be (in my opinion) the best game in the entire series!
      Pro Skater 4 is very good too though! So if you liked that one you should like 3! :D
