  • In this video I show you how I cast in place faceted sapphires using the sand casting technique.
I will have to try another camera angle to get even better close up and detailed footage of stone placement inside the flask.

Another fantastic video, would love to see how you would cast a twig/wand pendant with faceted stones in place. I’ve made one using a real twig and layers of silver clay past but it was really long process because I had to let each layer dry before painting on the next layers.

I love your videos and am champing at the bit for new ones (no pressure 😉).
I bit the bullet and contacted Coolamon mine and bought a very small amount of rough sapphires. I let them know that you’d recommended them and Amelia guided me to the kind of stones you and your students use. They arrived today and I’m so excited to give casting in place a try 😁
Thank you for the motivation and inspiration to try something new! 💕

Kirra-Lea: I had some fails: silver not filling the mould mainly. I tried to pour a small heart with three 2mm faceted sapphires but all three were repositioned by the molten silver and are just about visible. I tried a teardrop with a rough sapphire and the silver flowed enough to fill most of the mould and secure the stone but didn’t quite fill the whole thing; can you solder once you’ve cast in place? I’d like to add a nail. My first successful was a teardrop using a 4mm sapphire but the sapphire has cracked 😕. I’m still trying!

    Hi Kira
Do you “stick” the stones to the outer vertical wall ?
Can you show how you expose the stones further

I do stick them to the outer vertical wall. If the stones and up being cast with too much metal over them I use my engraving tool to cut the metal away to expose the stone. I will have to include this in one of my videos :)

Hi, how would you go about poking through the sand gently on the sides to set the stones in place and give more of a raised set texture? Joining it all up seems like it could go very wrong? The ring almost seems like it needs to be casted the other way around. Any ideas would be great!

I like to use my paper embossing tool to create grains to hold the stones in place. But like you said its super tricky to line it up on the two halves. So my trick is to have most of the ring on one half of the mould, that way you can place full grains without having to line up the two halves :)

How would you do the clean up if the ring blank isn't round? Meaning you can't twist it to clean up the hole? Thank you Kirra-Lea for all of these great videos, they have given me the confidence to try this out on my own!

Just put the object back in position and give it a very gentle press to crisp up the impression again :)

Could one use cuttlefish to do cast in place rings?

I don't see why not :) Give it a go, should be exactly the same process of sticking the stones in place :)
