    The reason Phelps was happy is because he never swam for records. He swam for passion. It is impossible to train as much as he did without a deep burning passion. The passion of the sport. And when you have this passion, you will be happy when a record is broken, even if it is your own.

      I agree that he had passion, but the man 100% swam for records also. He wrote down specific times he wanted to hit for every olympic race he ever did.

      Yes, we all start out doing it for enjoyment, but when Phelps was turning pro, he was asked by his agent "what did he want to do?" & he stated "to do something no-one has ever done" (8 gold medals in a single games) ergo break records

    The breaststroke is unrecognisable now to what is was only a few years ago. A great part of the technique has more in common with butterfly than with 'traditional' breaststroke. This, in my opinion is the main reason for the faster time.

    An interesting thing about the breast stroke which I recently figured out is that it is the only stroke where the kick goes pretty much straight back, which is far more efficient than flutter kick or dolphin kick, where most of the energy goes up and down. Never could swim breast stroke because my feet just won't point out like that.... Now, if the over arm side stroke ever gets to be a competition stroke again, the record will drop a lot more.... Still need to get that video made... Life is getting in the way.

    It usually isn’t that athletes can’t achieve a certain time barrier like a world record or the next round number. It’s that they don’t know how to. Someone has to figure it out first. An example is the 2:03:xx marathon. Not long ago, that was considered almost impossible. Then it was achieved. Then the other elite marathoners adapted to this new reality of training and expectation. Now a dozen guys can do that. The same will happen in swimming. Paradoxically, the super suits may have slowed record progression because everyone was thinking “you need a super suit to do X, and I can’t use one now.”

    Slight error in your graphics: Michael’s WR in the 200 IM was 1:54.23. He set that in 2008 and Lochte broke it in 2009 with a 1:54.10 The 1:54.16 is his PB, set a mere .16 after Lochte in that famous 2011 shootout.

    The Great Wayne Gretzky said... "records are meant to be broken" - makes the sport that much more interesting. However, I believe it will only be a matter of when, NOT if, someone sets an under 4 min 400M IM time. Whether that's Leon or the "next" Phelps in 10 or 20+ years.
    Look at Summer McIntosh, she owns the world record for the 400m IM (she's only 17 yrs old), and even more impressive, she is nearly 6 secs faster than the 2nd best in the world, which makes her feat that much more impressive!
    FYI: Records are great, but I'm more interested in how many Olympic Medals one has, especially gold ones!

    Anyone who knows sports knows all world track and field records from the 70/80's eastern bloc countries mean nothing, all sprinting records from the 80/90's are tainted, and all swimming times from the body suit era aren't applicable. "World records" in all sports are beaten at a constant and fairly applicable rate, but when something other than the athletes natural abilities are the cause it stands out. The number of "best times" in various strokes and distances across the board by hundreds of swimmers all just happened to be from 2007-2009, and when the suits got banned it has taken years for the natural progression to top those times.

    • @robert-surcouf
      @robert-surcouf 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you think only eastern bloc countries athletes records are suspects, you're a bit naive.
      For swimming, it seems the 90's was a decade with very few records broken then come the early 2000's with new records after new records (the training or the "training" was surely better in those era than the late 80's/early 90's) and finally the 08-09 (07 could be include too but i will not) period with broken suit that made some records unbreakable like the 200m backstroke or all the freestyle between 200m and 1500m (the 1500m was close to be broken in the recent years but not yet).

      Watch the video from the start - Most swimmers are not go at all the strokes, especially back stroke and breast stroke. I have a field day when I teach learners who can't do this properly. The majority of coaches can't teach back and breast stroke.
      I worked in a place that made swimmers - Swimlab - cape town. We knew this for a fact because there records would have never lasted because we knew that they not built strong enough for this game. There were a few international swimmers and my Head coach helped with the SA team.
