In this video we are going to learn about the basic controls of reverb and how they affect your sound.
Reverb is caused by sound reflecting off the space it resides in, causing the sound to dance around a room and build up until it eventually decays and gets absorbed. Reverb happens naturally in a room, and is commonly mistaken for echo. The difference being that echo is a simple repeat of sound, while reverb is how the sound reacts and reflects within a room, adding ambience and space to the sound.
Delay could be referred to as an echo that is in focus with crisp distinguishable repeats, while reverb is more of an out of focus and ambient sound.
In the early days of music recording, there was no machine, pedal, or plugin for reverb. An artist would have to go to a specific building that already had good natural reverb like a theatre or opera hall. The microphones were then placed at a distance from the instrument being recorded so that it would pick up the natural reverb of that room.
The digital world has found a way to emulate this effect through the use of plugins, pedals, and onboard effects. In any typical reverb plug-in there is a wide range of presets trying to recreate the natural sounds of particular styles of reverb such as hall, chamber, room, plate, spring, etc. Let’s look at some common parameters of reverb that you will find on most emulated effects
Every reverb you use will have a dry/wet control. This is used to control how much of the processed signal you will hear vs how much of the unprocessed signal you will hear. Setting this parameter all the way to dry will essentially bypass the effect. Setting it all the way to wet, only the processed sound will be heard.
Another common control you will find is the pre-delay time. This will allow you to adjust the time lapse between the direct sound and the reflections that come next. This helps emulate the size of the room. A longer pre-delay time will sound like a larger room and a shorter pre-delay time will seem like a smaller room.
Next we have reverb time. Reverb time controls how long the reverb lasts. This is also known as decay. A short reverb time is around 400 Millisecond while a long reverb time is 2 to 6 seconds. This emulates the sound treatment of a room.
Dry/Wet, Pre-Delay, and Reverb time are the three main parameters of Reverb. Many reverb effects will have additional controls to fine tune the desired sound
Reverb is a helpful tool too give a sound more breath and air too it. It transforms a dry sound into one that is full of space and dynamic

would have been nice if they included more parameters like "damp," etc....

@@shpongled587 But that would drift off the subject, it's only about reverb.

Excelent. So much easier to understand when there's a graphic representation of what happens to the sound.
