Thumbs up if you would love to be in the audience!!!
One of things I love about this song is that it doesn't matter where your 'place' is. I've never even visited the US, let alone Carolina, and yet I can sing this song with feeling as I think of my personal happy place and go there instead :)
Ah then there's no reason to come to the Carolinas! Stay away... there's nothing here for you.
I think he's one of the most deceptively brilliant guitarists out there... it's only when you try and replicate the way he picks that you realise how bloomin' good he is!
Exactly correct! I learned this song and it's impossible for me to play it the way he does, he's extremely talented
Bloomin is a very strong word. How dare you.
Just before he signed with Apple, James's demo was brought to Paul McCartney by Peter Asher, and Paul was floored, not only by his voice but by his guitar playing. Shortly after that Taylor performed live for McCartney, and Paul was equally impressed. The rest is history, as James went on to become the first non-British artist to be signed with Apple Records.
Hahaha yes! When I was first heard Fire and Rain I thought it’s easy-peasy then when I tried to play, I realized I was wrong…
Speaking of bloomin’ i never heard that word used but it’s not just about his guitar…he is sort of smiling along with me but not putting on a smile as a performer that creates the bloomin’ idea. I saw his guitar and his permorming but there was more to it where he was happy to share with us and bring us to a place he was and i was happy for him being there even if only for a few minutues which is why i read some comments about people wanting to replay it to be there with him again. I wonder what the Seriusxm audio listeners heard or felt not seeing him glow and if they could ferl his smile? i don’t think it was so much a nasal effect but the sound resonating from his vibration of peace inside. I had a short lesson in speech therapy and they had me vibing certain letters. An actor can entertain and make you believe but a performer can take you where he is. That was a nice ride and i somehow ended up in NC just like he advertised and there sure was still a sun, moon, changing leaves, ocean, mountains, and anything else you could ever want. I got hurt in an accident and came back up north in seeming misery beyond the near fatal injuries but once in a while i get to listen to this song and get to go back. I spent my whole childhood waiting on a ticket to get there and only lasted a couple years but just like he says you can go back in your mind. A lot of places are like the dark side of the moon. Someone asked who Karin is but that might just be short for Carolina and it is definitely about NC even though south is now a big retiring destination i hear. Other versions from JT haven’t been as special to me to hear as this and i have been touched by other xm singers like Pink so i wonder if they have any special prep for this one performance to make sure it is a big hit. The other version that struck me was the BBC one from 70’ when he got his deal so i was glad to find this one. People are right with certain songs or artists you just can’t replicate it and it’s amazing what someone can do with a voice and a guitar even if you don’t think they are supposed to match together. Even the lyrics dont sound the same seeing or reading them compared to feeling it. I never used to know what they were saying but all i knew was that Carolina had something special to offer someone more convincing than sweet home Alabama so that became my life mission. Once i got there maybe i got a little too complacent thinking i got what i was looking for in life. It was a nice treat to read all these comments after 25 years of moving that at least i went and maybe didn’t fail just because i didn’t stay. Some say they never went but can appreciate his enjoyment that is pure in the song and be there with him. The performance deserved cheers because we saw James be swept away as if he was in some sort of bloom where he can tune into special thibgs and tune out others. The emotion we saw was the thing that put all of our senses in motion. The nasal idea was more of a peaceful humming effect than the melodic whistle flow that caught our attention the first time. To create the song differently and share it that way is mastery instead of just picking a song to replay the same motions like a bad relationship for livelihood sakr the rest of your life is a tragedy and that’s not what we saw here. We knew what to expect and he was excited to share it again with us which is special and why people are counting the years. To not get sick of or give up on something is inspiring since he could have found other things to do but he knew he could still connect with people through it and that’s what he did. If he didn’t believe he had something to share neither would we. I guess i can say i never left NC if he lets us go with him “despite space and time with a little rewind…”
I'm from North Carolina and this song makes me tear up every time I here it since my parents moved us away from NC
Tamedwolf75 i moved to NC just over 2 years ago. These songs he sings comes to life as you travel around the state
Awesome to see him play this so many years later... legend
I spent 30 years longing for a "Rainy Night In Georgia", the last 20 have been for "Carolina in my Mind."
I heard this back in England when it came out. I loved England but that song gave me a new appreciation for wishing to be back home in Colorado. James Taylor is my favorite story teller.
It feels like these songwriters in the 60-70s just pumped out these masterpieces! So many great songs come from that era and today were lucky if we get a song like this every ten years.
200 likes and 0 dislikes. Never seen it before with a video that has so many likes, but James certainly deserves to have everybody's favor.
Such a beautiful voice, beautiful song about Carolina. Am abit biased as we retired there. Lastly, such a beautiful man onside and out. God Bless James Taylor
The comments..... so refreshingly positive and touching
freakin awesome. unlike some other singers, he sounds exactly the same as he was 30+ years ago
A man so modest and with such overwhelming talent. A master for sure
This man always has and always will reduce me to tears of happiness and joy from the sheer beauty of his raw, undeniable talent.
I want him to live forever. Been a fan since 1973. Can't imagine life without him.
I know this was done in 09 but so happy James' voice is still so clear and beautiful as it was in his early years.
Cyndi Foore he has a beautiful voice
Its incredible how his voice has not dropped a bit...
James found a home right here shared with us with his smile singing. Too bad the xm peie didnt see his peaceful presentation.
I was born in Miami and we moved to Hendersonville NC when I was 6. Hendersonville was just too small for my parents after living in Miami as long as they did so we moved to Charlotte when I was 8. I attended Appalachin State and then had to move back to Florida to help my ailing parents. I had gotten my BS in Criminal Justice but while in Florida I became a paramedic, worked in Florida for a while, did some work as a private military contract paramedic in Iraq and Afghanistan.... while I was in Asscrackistan I heard this song (of which, it is sad to say) that I had not heard in a LONG time. The day I came back to the states I told my wife that I wanted us all to go home to NC (she is originally from Canada). We moved back to Charlotte 2 months later. I now live in Mount Holly NC (near Charlotte, but a little smaller and more laid back) and I will never live anywhere else but NC.
And I have the legendary James Taylor to thank for reminding me of where I belong.
This is pure music. Each note so simple and but very majestic. I really enjoy playing along to this song. You really find yourself getting lost in it. Taylor, Dylan and Young are truly the greatest singer/songwriters of all time.
Nobody sings like JT. Wow. So glad to be around when he's alive.
Had the chance to be in the audience that afternoon in the studio. Hearing this song in such intimate setting was amazing. Great memory. Thanks for posting this.
Wow you jammy bugger
i never realized how skilled James is on guitar
so beautiful
Hell's Bells man.. we know dat. He picks his ass off don't he? It only took me 40 years to find how he does Fire and Rain. If the Beatles see the talent in James Taylor.. it is there in spades. He is a treasure, that is for sure. Peace bro.
Still the same james taylor of the 70's, classic voice with his lullabye song, one of my fav. song of JT, still listening to this song, all his song, playing also with it, a legendary singer & a song writer, stay safe always my idol...
In my mind I'm gone to Carolina
Can't you see the sunshine?
Can't you just feel the moonshine?
Ain't it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind?
Yes, I'm gone to Carolina in my mind
Karin, she's a silver sun
You best walk her way and watch it shine
Watch her watch the morning come
A silver tear appearing now
I'm cryin', ain't I?
Gone to Carolina in my mind
There ain't no doubt in no ones mind
That love's the finest thing around
Whisper something soft and kind
And hey babe, the sky's on fire
I'm dying, ain't I?
Gone to Carolina in my mind
In my mind I'm gone to Carolina
Can't you see the sunshine?
Can't you just feel the moonshine?
Ain't it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind?
Yes, I'm gone to Carolina in my mind
Dark and silent, late last night
I think I might have heard the highway call
And geese in flight and dogs that bite
The signs that might be omens say
I'm goin', I'm goin'
I'm gone to Carolina in my mind
With a holy host of others standin' around me
Still I'm on the dark side of the moon
And it seems like it goes on like this forever
You must forgive me, if I'm up and gone to
Carolina in my mind
In my mind I'm goin' to Carolina
Can't you see the sunshine?
Can't you just feel the moonshine?
Ain't is just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Yes, I'm gone to Carolina in my mind
Gone to Carolina in my mind
And I'm goin' to Carolina in my mind
Gone to Carolina in my mind
Gone, I'm gone, I'm gone
Say nice things about me 'cause I'm gone South now
Carry on without me, I'm gone
I'm so homesick for South Carolina. Las Vegas is like living in a different universe.
I love James Taylor! I love his music. I love what kind of human he is also.
What an awesome rendition of this song he's played a million times. The little guitar nuances at 2:15, 2:26, 3:13, 3:25, 3:38 and 3:48 this simple arrangement so fresh. Very very cool !!!
Ain’t no doubt in no ones mind that loves the finest thing around
Can't believe i am smiling and have tears in. My eyes? 👍
James Taylor is just the greatest to me, love this song, easily one of my all time top ten!
old , but gold
I've never been anywhere near Carolina nor be able to locate exactly where Carolina is, BUT this song Exudes that longing and yearning feeling when one is abroad and away from home / family as I did once.
So it is in a way, also my favourite JT's song but MY ' Carolina ' is elsewhere.
Every year in August , with the exception of this year, I head down in August to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This is the song I listen too to sike me up before I go.
You are the best singer I've ever heard and you don't even use auto tune or any kind of voice modifier it is pure talent the god our heavenly father gave you I thank you for sharing that talent with us
true very true
He's a god
It's incredible how he wrote his music. That whole period of time in music was awesome. Some of the best music came from those years....it's sure a lot better than the copycat garbage of today.
Yes, I agree with a lot of comments here, I love James too ☺️☺️
This song makes him smile every time he sings it. :-)
If I am having a bad day....I just put on this song. His voice just cheers me up when things are rough.
I think like wine, he has gotten better with age. This song/video....is just beautiful. I love it.
Music like this doesnt exist anymore. Fantastic tune. I could listen to it all day.
A Musical Genius!!!
James is a beacon of hope.
Man I love this song! He sings it so beautifully while he performs it live!
James Taylor created much of my life .....luckily , about 25 years ago , I was in Rhode Island and Liv was there , not Steve Tyler's daughter but , Livinigston Taylor , the great singer ... Jame's brother ....we had a ball.....got drunk .....
Could listen to this man sing forever... thanks for the video
It really says something that James was one of the first artists The Beatles signed to Apple records. The Fab Four knew greatness when they saw it.
These xm live shows are always great. Nothing but the rich in the audience though. You can tell.
Incredible songwriter, incredible guitarist--and then he has that honey-toned voice. Goodness, what a complete musical talent.
Eric clapton
I have lived a long time, and this song is my favorite, and l'm not even an American, and l've never been to Carolina, North or South.
East Carolina College '65....I still miss it!
you can see the emotion in his eyes at 4:20 - 4:27 , but pretty much all the way through , like someone posted , i listen to real heavy stuff , but this song is on eof my fave songs along with alot of 80s pop and country songs , love this guy man
A pure angel. God bless you, James. I love you.
Thank you, James,...I can see the sunshine and feel the moonshine.....and I can go back to being young ......But hey! Now is good too...and so it's good to hear that it's not just a young man's song...You sing it for all times, James. Beautiful!!!
I see there was some talk about this guitar. I also noticed mention of Justin Hayward. It is indeed an Olson and story has it that Justin really liked the Olson that was in the backroom of an LA music store that was made specifically for Mr. Taylor. Justin liked it so much he asked James if he could purchase it and James politely agreed. You will see it in some of Justin's videos. James just had another one made!
Funny how all these artist play on here (sirius)with all there pieces and bands and back up and they still don't hold a candle to James all by himself. Rock awn sweet James!
JT - one of the musical gifts we've been given. Thanks, James, for all the years and all the music. This is one of my favorites...
I guess this song is about where you want to be and it's beautiful......
James has so much passion in his voice. a pleasure to watch and listen to
Just as gorgeous sounding as decades ago. a dream man indeed....
Excellent James, your acoustical version just keeps getting better with time.
LOVE!!!
JUST LOVE NC FOREVER!!!
This.
Timeless piece.
It is amazing that JT sings better now than his early years!. Go JT!
1 of the best musician & the best finger picking legend of the guitar. .
His voice makes me sleep,, so angelic,,
That is absolutely incredible given the age of both him and the song
Such a touching song to me, & I'm melted forever...
This is Great!, James Taylor is a great Musician.
Perfect in so many ways, there aren't the proper words to describe this.
it`s just so pure, how can you not appreciate this!
