  • Ethnic Koreans in Central Asia are also known as the Koryo Saram. Their ancestors left Korea for Russia's Far East in search of a better life in the early 20th century. They were later forcibly deported to Central Asia in 1937 during the rule of Joseph Stalin. In the first of a three-part series, CNA meets a Koryo Saram family in Kazakhstan. Today, there are an estimated 500,000 Koryo Saram scattered across several former soviet union states.
