Originated in Italy, made popular in France, and now have 2 distinct styles: French macarons & Italian macarons. The ones I’m making in the vid are French. BUT yes! Originally from Italy!! ☺️

I actually do like coconut so I probably order a box of both for a special occasions.
I had to pronounce this for my sister and in high school as part of a French class, my instructor made it a mini lesson for us to write down and the country of origin. A macaron is French in origin. The Macaroon is of Italian origin. You would greatly upset some Italians around Christmas time if you ordered the wrong one. Similar base ingredients but different outcomes in cooking once you add coconut or how you prep it.
Depending on where you live and you do speak French a macaroon with the coconut is actually called “Congolais” or “le rochèr à la noix de coco”. Though typically most go with “Congolais”.
If you speak Spanish, you know the difference of a macaroon as “Besitos De Coco” - Coconut Kisses.
Side note: a Besito de coco is a cookie and should not be confused with a cocada/ Conserva de coco.

Macaroons and Macarons are two variants of the same Italian cookie (that was possibly Arabic in origin) filtered through two different cultural lenses.
"Macaroons" as were made due to the popular in Jewish communities due to the fact that they are unleveled cookies and thus they are eaten in passover. Because it was hard for American Jewish immigrants to get a hold of almond/pistachio flower/paste they went for another "nut" product that was regularly available. Coconuts. Processed dried baking coconut shavings were cheap and available at the time.
The "macaron" as people call them is just the french pronounciation of the same word. This is pretty common when translating french words to english. Boufon becomes Bafoon for example. The version with the smooth dome and the nice little feet was created in the mid 1900s and was called a french macaroon in the english lexicon for the past hundred or so years.
The Macaron pronunciation started outside of france widely in the early 2000s when the french version of the cookie became trendy.
    Fun food fact!

It’s no biggie. The reason we speak is to have other people understand us, so if you speak in a way that everyone can understand, there’s no problem. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with pronouncing a word with an American dialect instead of pronouncing it like how it’s native language with sound. A lot of people are really uptight when it comes to that, not her though she was really cool, but it’s really nothing to worry about. You can pronounce it however you want, but there’s nothing wrong with pronouncing it different than how someone that’s a native speaker from wherever it comes from would pronounce it.

quick debrief: they’re both “French” but actually Italian and made with egg whites
    everything else is totally different
My person expertise falls more into macaroons, they are the simplest, ugliest, most coconuty cookie ever (though they originally did not contain coconut) and originated in Sicily, BUT they were brought over by Jewish immigrants who liked them because they were good for Passover. They were popularized a long long time ago by nuns in Nancy, France who made and sold them. They are made with three main ingredients: shredded coconut, egg whites, and 1 can condensed milk. Highly recommend, but you’re not alone if your knowledge of their existence was actually macarons :)
    rhe more you know! enjoy!

If we think who did first something primitive, you can always find a different origine. For exemple Spaghetties are originaly imported to Italia from Asia by Marco Polo🤔, rice made. Idem for Pizzas. Originaly many countries made this kind of meal in midfle East for exemple. What is important is the modern final result of a meal, which means much better and more sophisticated.

    • @Capyrate

Ah yes, the typical history of the main French delicacies. Someone, one day, brings something over to France, then French bakers work their magic and create their own twist to the original recipe. And all of a sudden, the thing is now fully French, with nobody remembering it might've come from someplace else before.
Macarons and croissants are a fraud. 😂 I mean, I absolutely adore them, and I love my country baking history. But it's hilarious reminding people that the most famous treats they're so proud of are initially borrowed.

It has roots stemming from the Middle East and Italy. The macarons was introduced by Catharine de Medici's chef during Renaissance era when she married King Henry II, a French king. The macaroon has a variety and are very similar to macarons because they used almond flour. Macaroons were adapted over time skipping the almond flour and going straight coconut flakes.
