I play two different instruments with frets but a much shorter scale length like a violin and tuned in fifths like a mandolin. Exclusively using flat pick. One has steel strings with average tension of twenty five pounds and the other one uses nylon 6 with average tension of nine pounds. Although I understand that theses guys are using a lot more tension, I find the physics and feel between the two are very interesting. The nylon is far more elastic and requires a larger swing to get the best tone where as the steel requires less movement but more pressure. I think the nylon is more lively.
