  • The polls are predicting a landslide victory for Keir Starmer, so how can he fix our broken Britain? Rory Stewart analyses how the Labour party could be restricted by the commitments in their manifesto, and outlines the three areas for improvement he would focus on if he were in a Labour government.
An Evening with Rory Stewart hosted by David Olusoga was originally broadcast on Sat 15 June 2024, live from The Forum, Bath.

Betting on growth? Better than betting on the election?

HS2 was started at the London end so no surprise it was stopped. Also the thought of AI being used extensively in the NHS is frightening speaking as a cancer patient.

Why the customs union? Should be the single market. Rory has never understood the difference between the two and thinks Customs Union is more important

Why do you think he doesn't understand the difference? Joining the single market means freedom of movement, which was the main reason Britain voted to leave the EU. The customs union brings benefits without feeling as much like a betrayal of the referendum.

@@Sam-zz7oz I've listened a lot to him on this Rest is Politics and he just doesn't understand, he thinks Customs Union is more important to economy (which it isn't) its because he worked with T May regards the customs union backstop. But economically for growth, single market far more important
Customs union could also be seen as betrayal because we wouldn't be able to have our own trade deals. That was a huge reason we left, not just immigration.
So if you're going to supposedly betray Brexit, u might as well as rejoin Single market also. Both of which we never actually had a referendum on anyway
Either way both have been ruled out by Labour so this conversation is meaningless lol, really can't see Labour being able to u turn on either even with a huge majority

@@kw2142 Our own trade deals are absolutely woeful in comparison to what we get in the Customs Union. There's literally no comparison in terms of economic benefits.

@@eddyd63 agree trade deals are a joke. I think you misunderstood me. my argument is single market is more economically beneficial to UK than customs union is. Both would be beneficial. But Single market is focused more on services and UK is a service economy. Customs is more to do with trade in goods, which is important for Northern Ireland protocol and this is what Stewart worked on during his time in power and hence why he thinks it's more important economically, but it isn't, the single market is.

Whoever thought brexit was a good idea. Complete halfwits. You were lied to by snakeoil salesman. Introduce compulsory voting and something may change he's actually brilliant but rather utopian ideals

The problem with Rory Stewart is that he just can't shut up!
