Turning his attention to the upcoming US Elections, Rory Stewart reflects on the suitability of Joe Biden to lead the Democrats forward, the role of artificial intelligence, and the frightening wave of populism that is sweeping countries around the globe.

The Grauniad tried that in 2004 - massive failure (It evoked the feeling "Who do you think you are telling me what to do?" - especially as the message comes from the old overlord)

It takes clever persons to change their minds. I think the British Electorate are able enough to see this notwithstanding whether they chose to do so. They were and are too frit that Rory Stewart is a Remainer. They will therefore praise him for his international observations but shun him when it comes closer to home observations.

What a great shame our politicians cannot understand what they call popular politics. Maybe they need to ask and listen to what they are told! Fact is the "Liberal West" appears to be deaf to the views of tens of Millions Europe wide.

The trouble is that what they hear is not a single coherent worldview, rationally expressed, but a list of unspecific grievances, often attributed to things that have nothing to do with them. If people believe things that aren’t true, it’s hard for politicians to respond to that without confronting the obvious - and nowadays if you tell someone that what they believe isn’t true their immediate reaction is to bad mouth you as an “elitist” or similar, because social media has taught them that their opinions are as valid as someone else’s objective facts.
