      Yeah, it was fascinating to see the quick edits this person did before bringing out the second ship - how they wanted it to pitch harder so they could follow targets, but how it also made it harder to stay on the target.

    I still want to see an unholy abomination made from the corpses of fallen spaceships roll into battle. Because with the building system it is actually possible to do so.

      Ooh Frankenships. Lauri had to get home using manual thruster activation due to not having a cable tool, so I can see that kind of inventive bodging happening for the sake of necessity.

    It's good to see ships even as small as fighters getting disabled more than exploded. Even other sandbox ship builder titles don't get far enough away from feeling like your grid has a health bar.

    That flying and aiming... this guy was definitely not a veteran space shooter. Anyway, I really want to see just how big a ship we're allowed to make, I'm guessing dreadnoughts are out of the question, likely limited to corvette and destroyers at best.

      It's pretty clear the flight is keyboard controlled at this stage. The physical nature of the thrusters also means the ships don't stop rotating on a dime like in old keyboard space shooters. You can see that up-down overcompensation waggle in some spots as there's just no way to get fine enough control with the setup, it seems. Kind of a bummer, a lot of creative-themed space games are going the 'design our own controls in in-game scripting' route, but that requisites fly-by-keyboard, and man that died with freespace 2 for a reason.

    Something I think is a key feature to keep in mind for future development, is targeting and/or detection methods. Space Engineers talked about radar, stealth and detection during their first year of public release, and then never touched the concept again (choosing to broadcast your location or not doesn't count). Actual methods to detect objects in space is vital if you want to allow players to be able to discover and interact with each other in the vastness of space, and prevent combat from requiring squinting at a few tiny pixels on the monitor to spot anything. It will also avoid players with 4k monitors getting an unfair advantage, or players always opting for grey-blue camouflage on everything rather than fun and personalised paint schemes.
    As a rough concept example, something that can scan for something like the mass of ships or power signatures out to a given range. Bigger ships, easier to detect. Lighter or low energy, harder, etc. Perhaps a different type of sensor for each method, with varying sizes/costs/power-consumption. Could inject a really special strategic element into the game, and add a fun additional consideration to ship design.

      @@starrynights467 It would need a fairly major overhaul to be honest. More detailed damage and armour mechanics, ship systems design, and just general expanded weapon content. As is, the SE's ships have always been basically "zombie ships" that are almost impossible to disable without utterly destroying them. Even a single small generator block in a huge capital ship is enough to power all it's guns, gyros, and hydrogen thrusters. Meaning until you destroy either every hidden back up generator, or every single weapon system, it's going to keep fighting, even if the entire crew is dead. There are no viable critical locations that can be targeted in a practical manner, and no volatile key systems (like Starbase includes) to influence design philosophy or play a role in combat.
      The game "From the Depths" is a perfect example of a deeply thought out and heavily nuanced ship design and combat system. Including multiple failure points or potential weakspots that players need to consider when designing, yet giving massive freedom for varied and distinct designs.
      So far from what I've seen, I'm very glad that Starbase seems to already have been thinking this through.

    this game needs some kind of grappling hook that can latch onto and reel in ships, both handheld and ship mounted. imagine the cool boarding craft designs and epic shipboard firefights!

      I'm really surprised. There was a little jankiness with spinning objects and the player models, and at least one case of momentary pop in/pop out, but the actual ship combat was super smooth. I wonder how high the entity count can get without sacrificing the current performance.
      Starbase is already at the level where it's miles ahead of anything resembling the competition. Other games handle large ships reasonably well, but the Starbase ships aren't (usually) large - they are dense, heavily detailed, and complex, with lots of physics.

    Great video guys.
    some feedback: consider adding a squad/party system that marks player on your hud when they're friendly. some icon above their head that you can see even when you're all on different ships.
    It seems a bit hard to distinguish friend from foe atm.
    Very excited to see how this game turns out.

      @@kapitanbeuteltier5889 ...No. Can't be a malfunction in-game because it is doing it right from the beginning of the video as a fresh ship and even in the respawned ship. Definite bug. I can't condemn your thought about a heat venting system but to only say that it (the volume and amount) of the effect was admittedly lopsided to that one top-left exhaust putting out far more than the others. It just makes more sense to me that those are maneuvering thrusters. But, as I said, I can't as of yet discount your thoughts on that.

    I'd like to see a full build of an average small fighter, whether it just be one person or a team of people working together to build the ship, we've seen a number of videos on the individual parts and features but we've yet to be shown a video on how it all works being built altogether at once

      There is currently one planet (The mighty gass midget), and Its so far away that it cant affect anything

      Mostly the planet serves as a point of reference. It's very hard to keep yourself oriented in a 3D space if a quarter of the screen isn't taken up by a giant planet with a rings and cloudy caps (giving you an up vs down) and sufficiently distinct planetary features (orienting spinward/anti spinward).
      In SE, for example, the sun is about the same as our own, visually speaking, and is harder to spot if you are spinning and rotating in random directions. Even if you find the sun, the nebula and star constellations aren't distinct enough to be usable for orienting yourself.
      Having a giant ringed gas giant like that is really quite brilliant.

    The music itself is great! The transitions though, could use work. Go from calm to fight music in an instant

    This looks unbelievably awesome, the only thing thats missing for me is a hud or something similar to enhance how combat looks and feels.

      The UI is still being worked on and will be among some of the last things we implement before Early Access launch since it's such a vital part of gameplay. :)

    It seems ok. Although it would be nice to get async. fire like 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4 in order to get higher projectile stream density. Second thing... I'm not sure if it is implemented. Pilots view angles (pitch, yaw, mayeby roll for vr and tracking) relative to front of ocuppied seat, so it would be possible to YOLOL in "elite dangerous" combat style. By this I mean look direction steering and weapon shift. Further also mayeby adding Interia dampeners device for aircraft like movement for ships with small mass (great for vitals to hide non main engine jet streams for filming)

    This is missing radar/HUD. Some kind of overlay highlighting/locking ships or energy sources (generators) would make this feel so much more like a space combat simulator, and less like a sandbox.

    How do you tell friendly vs enemy apart, when there's no name tags?

      And it’s an awesome feature too. Could you imagine high jacking an enemy fighter and use it to get in a really good position before attacking. I really hope there will be some sort of radio system too so you could hack enemy signals and listen to their comms

      I as thinking how much damage an enemy fighter could do if they played dead as well. A few of those ships which had pilot death looked like they could still do some damage.

    I also find it hard to distinguish friend or foe upon watching the whole video. I could easily mistake one of my own as an enemy at distance and shoot them accidentally.

      @@masheen_ ...To use YOLO in that way, it would need to hook into the game's API somehow so that EVERY entity in the game is "noticed" by the YOLO system and therfore be tagged. This is impossible. This would be way too powerful and also exploitable. YOLO will not have the ability or power to do this. It is simply OP. No, this is something that the Devs are going to have to address.

    I don't know if this has been answered before but projectile speed seems really, really slow, which when combined with a lack of lead indicators and friendly/enemy indicators seems like it could make small ship combat really frustrating. It's very slightly reminiscent of pre-avionics dogfighting, but planes at that time fired much faster traveling projectiles with a good dispersion to improve their odds of actually hitting something. Criticism aside though, the game looks great.

      @@alexanderlove53 Hm, at least on the starbase wiki cannon and laser type weapons are claimed to have 900-1000m/s speeds but these weapons don't seem like their projectiles are moving that fast. They might be plasma weapons, which are quoted as having only 500m/s travel times.

      @@youtubeisapublisher6407 also dont forget about some turrets with turn possibilities, so you will dont need to manuver all of the ship (pilot will do this work), you just shoot.
      Yes, it can be hard to peek some small target, but dont forgot thats it will be probably low time to kill when it small target, so if you do this you are winner. You dont need to fight small ship with small ship, it not a win situation.

      Lead indicators for me ruin the experience, it's too easy to land hits. You should be rewarded for skill and practice with your ship and weapons, not because you can follow a circle on the screen. The friendly indicator is whatever for me, since I think it was the hud disabled for the video. The cannon speed seems fine, I think you should have time to react to a projectile incoming. There is faster projectile weapons however. The ship rail cannon seems to have the fastest speed if you prefer that. Dogfight speed... I think it is best to hold off judgement until we can experience it. Maybe it plays faster than it looks? Other than that, I completely get that critique.

    When this game comes out my space engineers faction will expand to this game and i think it would be great the SDF in another game with more options then ever before
