When I see kayakers, canoeists, or even small Jon boats or stopped fishermen, I always slow to a no wake speed well before and for a good distance beyond them. It only takes a couple minutes off your run and it’s the RESPONSIBLE practice to safe and LEGAL boat captaining. As the operator, you are responsible for your wake. Too many operators have no clue, or just don’t care, which can cause tragic results. It’s the right thing to do power boaters!

    • @johnreiter4889

I think the point of this video is to make kayakers aware of the dangers large boats can create, but ACTUALLY all slower and ESPECIALLY non-motor powered craft have absolute right-of-way on the water, as they are limited by their mobility to make quick corrective maneuvers. But there are more instances where powerboaters ignore proper boating laws/rules and just plow a furrow of wake behind them oblivious to what a hazard they might be creating. I live on a recreational lake in the mid- south and witness this behavior every time I’m on the water.

As a surf ski paddler I would rather the powerboat pass me while it’s going fast and on plane. Worse thing is when the boat slows down and ends up digging it’s stern in, making a far bigger wake. Powerboats should either pass very slowly with no wake, or pass while on a plane - anything in between is bad.

There was a guy with no lights or flags on his kayak in the blind boat lane. I almost hit him. He was very apologetic. I gave him a lift back to his truck. Good demonstration. Thanks .
I would like to point out something about wake. It is a misconception that slowing down will necessarily reduce wake. Indeed it often exacerbates it. In order to significantly reduce wake, you must completely come off plane, slowing down to displacement speed. The first boat did not come off plane completely and may have thrown a bigger wake than when doing 40kts on a full plane. The larger sports fisher however, was a good example of the worst, on a semi-plane. If he had enough power to do it, if he came up to a very full plane, his wake would have been smaller. (If he had enough power.). Sometimes those big guys don’t and they MUST come down ALL the way to say about 6-7 kts max. Smaller boats that can really plane well often throw smaller wakes. (Of course then the speed itself can be dangerous in heavy traffic. ) If they are not going to come all the way down off plane there concept of slowing down can just make it worse. Great job on the kayaks guys. Well done.

    1. Is the channel No Wake?
    2. Coast Guard Rules of the road are as follows Power yields to Sail, Sail yields to Paddle. This is based on the ability to maneuver. The Marine Golden rule is Avoid Collision. Telling small craft paddlers to “Stay out of the channel” implies they have no right to be there. They do. Crossing the channel quickly and avoiding collision is good sense but larger craft are responsible for their boats and their wake.

The offshore boat is doing it terribly wrong. Plane out and get on by, or just idle by. If you half throttle a boat and don't plane out, th back end digs down and makes huge wake. I kayak and boat regularly. I'd rather any boat stay on plane and keep the wake smaller

Catchy phrase used to identify the "boat road" in the US is: "red, right, return". Meaning that power boats coming IN from the sea, lake, main river, what have you and headed TOWARDS the smaller waters or harbor will sail keeping the red buoys on their right and the green buoys on their left. This will mark the boating channel that has safe enough water depth for them to travel. As a kayaker, you want to always stay outside the channel, except to directly cross and only when the coast is clear. Assume power boaters aren't paying attention and may not see you. Just like crossing the street.

Have been fishing out a yak since 01' and have a had a center console since the early 90s...never encountered a problem that common sense can't handle yet. Let me preface this next statement with, I honestly am not trying to sound like an arse here...I kayak about 30ish times a year as i live on the waterway. I enjoy it mainly because it's more "one" with the water and I really like water...if you're in a tiny vessel like a kayak, you should be in a state of mind as if it's just a half step away from swimming or surfing. I don't try and stay dry and expect no one to see me so I proceed with that mindset. I love getting wet even when I go in the cooler months as I not only love fish, but see no big deal being wet until a true risk of hypothermia exist, which again, think about your environment before you go. Also, if you think anyone gives a rats
a$$ about you the minute u leave your home, you're sadly mistaken. When I'm in a busy channel which is 9 out of 10 times I go out, I simply wave my paddle if I think I have put myself in a risky situation and it has never failed me...with that said, it's pretty darn easy to see quite a ways in fairly calm water as there are no hills lol. Now night time presents an entirely different level of risks and that definitely requires some thinking, but I've spent a many night lying in my kayak drifting along the shore staring at the beautiful sky after or before I do some floundering. And by the way, I gave up my flounder gear and boat long ago when I realized the joy and simplicity, but just as effective if not more effective floundering in a kayak. The amount of effort I see folks put into gigging 4 flounder(amount legally kept per person in NC) is silly and cumbersome. U can walk or sit or stand in a yak with a basic, but strong spotlight that runs off AA batteries and bring a couple back up packs for about $8 a trip and flounder very effectively for a couple hours. No gas, no noise, no water too shallow and no prepping necessary. Alright, I'm done. Peace and happy kayaking.

      @liamgarvey33 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thats excellent advise. I am just starting out myself, but I reckon if I am caught with a wake coming towards me, I just need to make sure to meet it head on and not sit there let it broad side me. Waving the paddle and having a visibility flag is important, but sometimes you are gonna encounter an inexperienced and reckless person in a sizeable boat and they wont take any notice of you. Hopefully you can take the wake over the bow, otherwise, like you said, expect to get wet, and make sure everything is tied down. I assume when meeting a wake wave head on in a peddle kayak, you should peddle hard into it, rather than just steer into it without plenty of forward thrust?

I have passed an inlet multiple times on my kayak. The problem is, if you get hit by a wake and you on the side of the canal, you can be smashed against the rocks.
I went through pretty crazy wakes on my outback when boat literally just ran couple yards from my kayak. My personal bias is that outback is handling waves much better than PA.
Kayak has right of way as a non-motorized boat, so "this big offshore boat" is not an excuse to run in full speed while passing a kayak. Yes, they need to slow down. If this is a problem, then they should probably learn navigation rules or stay at home. They are also responsible for their wakes. So, if a person in a kayak gets hurt or experiences other type of damages, they will be liable even if they just created wakes and those waves flipped a kayak. So, they need to slowdown and proceed carefully while passing a kayak. That is the law.

Power boats, which are useless here, have to stay in the channel markers for 2 miles before they can even make a turn. I sold my boat because of that and bought a few kayaks. It opened up a whole new world. No engine problems, no maintenance, no insurance. Just pure fun. One major thing about kayaks. That is like responsibility in auto crashes, it's after the damage is done.
In most cases it's better to be on a plane to reduce wake but that speed is terrifying without distance.
If you are pushing a wake you can time a chop of the throttle and create a calm hole in your wake to avoid swamping small craft.
That said kayaks in any waters should expect to get wet and maybe even swim.

Kind of! An interstate is built, maintained and regulated by different set of rules and governments! Water is different! Courtesy both ways is always expected. Of course we have in place trafic regulations as we would have in a road.. But faster boats have less right over underpowered small crafts under regular conditions! "Give the right of way". But I get it.. You have to "protect your self at all times" .

Have the same problem on man-made lakes. The water is deep almost everywhere and the powerboats do not slow down for kayaks. So make sure they can at least see you. Even in sailboats it seems that people in powerboats do not know or care about right of way on the water in the inland lakes. And if there is a fishing tournament going on!!! 250 hp and a kayak on the same water gets dicey.

I ALWAYS carry 2 air horns. 1 ON MY PFD, AND 1 ON MY YAK (at the ready). Been boating all my life and grew up on a major Stern wheeler river. I learned quickly that BRIGHT COLORS, LIGHTS, FLAGS AND LOUD SOUND can save your life. All are a MUST. Riding a kayak is like Riding a motorcycle. Others are supposed to pay attention, look out for you, and be courteous, but no one does, so you have to assume everyone is out to get you. I have found that the best way to deal with boat wakes is to hit them at 45°, also avoiding busy channels helps as long as the water isn't extremely shallow outside of the channel.

Me and my family were out on our kayaks yesterday, not the best weather but we had just gotten brand new yaks and wanted to use them, a boater came flying by us 4 times, same one, we were a arms reach from shore and almost tipped over, when we came back in we waited for him to get his boat out of the water, he destroyed the propeller, because the launch wasnt made for a boat his size, I thought that and the small hole in the side of his boat from hitting the rocks were enough payback

// slow down to 5 knots when 50 m of a person, vessel, wharf, jetty, slipway, diving platform or boat ramp on coastal and enclosed waters// slow down to 5 knots when 100 m of a dive flag // slow down to 5 knots when 200 m of the shore on enclosed and coastal waters or as per the scheduled waterway rules. • @mistermoonJB
      @mistermoonJB 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You apparently don't know the rules of the road. ROW priority high -> low = Emergency vessels / vessels constricted in maneuverability (large ships, tugs and tows) / commercial fishing and ferries / non powered craft including sail, human powered, and vessels not under command / powered vessels. You are the bottom of the food chain when it comes to ROW priority and in the wrong for not complying with the rules of the road. Everyone needs to be courteous and treat others around them with respect. Don't be a part of the problem.

Don't know about where you are, but several years ago, the wife and I were kayak fishing on a river in Virginia. A jet boat passed within thirty feet of us, wide open, the wake pushed us into the lillie pads on the bank. I whistled at him and motioned for him to slow down. He laughed, waved, and continued upriver.
We continued to fish the general area, not wanting to fight upstream current. We had started back downriver to the ramp, calling it a day, when the jet boat blew by again, less than ten yards from us, full throttle. His wake forcing our kayaks onto the exposed sandbar we were paddling by. No excuse for his actions, the river was 200 yards wide.
I put my kayak back in the water, called 911, and paddled after him. Caught him loading his boat on the trailer at the ramp. I took my camera out of my vest, took his picture, his buddies picture, the boat registration, truck license plate, and all the beer cans in the boat.
He wanted to argue, said Jet Boats have to run wide open.
I told him passing that close was reckless and endangered my wife and I.
    "Then call the cops."
    " Already did. "
"His buddy immediately stated taking beer cans out of the boat."
"Too late," I said, tapping my vest pocket.
Just a small fine for a wake violation, he laughed. I have paid a few.
I shook my head. Intentional, a second pass, at ten yards...
Reckless Endangerment. Lot more than a SMALL fine, can be jail time.
He jumped in the truck and left.
I had the pictures. Sheriff and Game Warden showed up. I emailed the pics. THEY were really happy. Long list of complaints. Pled guilty, plea deal.

Waves over the deck is just a normal part of kayaking. Wake is fun to surf the bigger the better, bring it on. Just learn how to kayak and teach the kids to kayak. Yes, you do have to assume you are invisible to other boaters and act accordingly, but there is no need to be overprotective about it.
