We see plenty of guys initiating contact from both directions in those sorts of battles, and it almost never results in a call unless someone retaliates like Sid did here. It's functionally already a puck battle, so I don't see any reason it should be ruled differently than if the puck has already touched a stick
How many Captains in the history of the NHL do things like that over the decades. They are on the verge of rebuilding with the end of era of the "big 3" just like the Blackhawks had to go through, it's the life of sports.

An already proven coach is not the problem, put a cat in the oven doesn’t make it a biscuit. The Real problem is Dubas, he has already proven, years ago, he is not a chess playing GM. He is a fake It even when you make it, unless he gets lucky, he will do more harm than good to a pro hockey team. He didn’t even address the one Area of concern in the Off-season, that should’ve been the number one priority. I think most, not all, the fault lies on him. I grew up in Detroit and am a diehard Wings fan, but I now live in Pittsburgh. This is a football town first, a baseball town second, and the Pens come in third. This issue is, the second the Pens aren't winning, the fans lose interest. The majority of their fans have no more interest in this team than bandwagon interest. When the Pens suck, you'll see how many real fans they have. Like I said, I live here.. and I can name more Pens players than the average Pittsburghers I encounter. Just saying. The last time the Pens sucked, they went bankrupt.
Pittsburgh has a huge youth hockey program relative to the population. Also there's a salary cap and revenue sharing unlike before so thinking the league is the same as last time is pretty delusional.
