  • Just because there is a picture of a chameleon on the box, does not mean you should get it for your chameleon. These are all things I would avoid buying for your chameleon.

    I work at a pet store and the main reason I started working there was because I was so tired of how much false information on animals went on in the store, I am now the head of the petcare department and we have ditched the packets the send us and I have instructions for each animal and their care down to the last detail and we print them and give them to the customer for them. I have a lot of people now coming in and showing me photos of their reptiles to show me how good they’re doing and how much they’re loving them and it makes me so happy to see :)

      This makes me so, so, so happy to hear! Thank you for doing what is best for these animals. If you’re looking for someone to review the care sheet you’ve made for a chameleon, I’d be happy to take a look and provide any feedback. Keep being awesome 👍🏻

      Neptune the Chameleon I’ll send it to you through an Instagram DM and for a night light I use a low wattage ceramic heat bulb! Doesn’t produce the light but still provides him heat which he does need a little more of at night in my home!

      Every chameleon is different, some of these items could be alright like the bendy branches my cham prefers to climb on them vs the branches from his plants because they give him better grip. I clean his cage regularly and mine aren't flaking so it all depends!

      Same! My boyfriend had a chameleon before, that passed away due to an infected foot from losing a nail. The vet gave him a shot, but sadly he still died the next day. Anyways, we (mostly I because I’m the one who goes all out to take care of him) got a 3 year old male veiled chameleon from this girl who was basically on bed rest for two years after an injury and got him, but she’s starting school and wanted someone who had time to give him what he needs. Anyways, she gave me so much info since he’s my first, and he came with his WHOLE enclosure, vitamins, lights, misting, all that. However, I started doing a bunch of research Bc some days he’d look very pale. I also noticed random little white spots in places on him that are like, flaky. Almost like patches of peeling. His back feet also started to peel then I realized it was because his ankles were swelling!! I messaged her asking for answers on how to care for him Bc the internet scared me. She said those things were normal for him. Some days he was happy and bright, others pale and almost seeming sad or sick. She got him when he was already 1. I originally felt better based of what she said and my research, but furthering it, I’m now scared again. He’s had that double light since she got him, only fake plants in his cage, a two bug diet one of them being the worms, the vitamins that were NOT recommended, and I noticed he only hand feeds and even hand waters. I have to hand mist around him for a bit then he will come drink from the nozzle. Im officially worried about the little guy. 😔 I clearly need to redo everything about his environment. But with that being said. I still have some questions. I tried to get his exact schedule from her for feeding, misting, lighting, ect., but she said he didn’t really have one. So I’m sure he’s been stressed with the move and lack of scheduling. Also concerned be that all those things she said are normal for him, but when given the vitamins the back ankle swelling will go down. But they’re the vitamins in this video 😅 so I’m not wanting to continue that, but I’m unsure of a better way as of now. She’s also never taken him to a vet. I’d also like a recommendation on the best place to put his enclosure. Which is a 5ft tall 3ft wide screened enclosure. I didn’t intend for this much info to be dropped on your comment 😂 I was originally trying to basically just say SAME to having knowledge of all the wrong stuff. But I get worked up thinking about all that could be wrong 😅 so if you have any advice on how you guys handled your new baby! Or maybe someone will see this and be able to help. I’m just really wanting him to be okay. 🥲💖

      Xandra Maddock Thanks for the feedback :) I showed the hornworms as an example, since I was saying there are plenty of other bugs you can feed a chameleon besides mealworms. Sorry I wasn’t able to go into more detail in this video. I do have a whole video dedicated to hornworms and talk about how often to feed them, etc. I also have a video on what bugs to feed a chameleon and talk about them during that one too.

I've only used pothos, tradescantia aka wandering Jew, and peacock moss (selaginella). Also ferns... but i doubt my Pygmy chameleons ever ate any. At least not in my presence. But, can chameleons' systems digest ANY plant? What are some unsafe species?

Also I have the pumpy shwoshwo sprayer (cleaned thoroughly of course bc it smells like plastic when you buy it) until my mistaking gets here and it has a lock on the switch so I just set it up in the right area and pump it 3 times and it sprays for around 3 minutes so that's awesome lol.

    Ooops… I definitely have a little waterfall in my enclosure 😢 I used the automatic misting system and have seen my guy drink off the leaves but have never seen him near the little waterfall. I was mostly trying to make it a more realistic environment. (Taking it out now though. Why risk it plus, the bathroom was too quite anyways)
    Thanks for the wonderful care advice ❤

    I have the hammock for my chameleon and she actually does enjoy it and uses it has a hiding spot! I see that having multiple options for your chameleon is great but I think every chameleon is different so I wouldn’t say not to buy it because my friend also has one and his little guy loves it too so just depends!

    • @NeptunetheChameleon
      @NeptunetheChameleon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not a matter of a chameleon not liking it. They will climb on anything they can. The issue is the hammock is made out of a material that can rip out their nails, grow bacteria, and is not something that is natural for chameleons to climb on. Adding in more branches and plants for coverage where the hammock is, is definitely the safer way to go.

    • @tylerbowman6719
      @tylerbowman6719 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Neptune the Chameleon I have my cage stocked full of bamboo sticks along with hibiscus plant and she prefers the hammock still, not sure how it can grow bacteria I use mine as a partial basking spot and yet to have any issues, I would suggest finding a balance and if there was worries about nail ripping the cage itself could do that but thanks I’ll keep it in mind

    What would you suggest to replace bendy vines then? I cant use sticks found outside because a) most of the trees we have here are not reptile safe (lots of cedar for instance) and b) we now have a heat resistant parasite in our trees that has evolved to deal with half the province catching fire every summer, so even baking branches wont kill it if the wildfires cant manage that task. And im definitely not risking adding parasites to the ecosystem. Only found out because my vet has seen plenty of infected reptiles die due to this parasite because it doesnt respond well to meds.

    If buying a reg light bulb for heat what wattage would I buy? For a hatchling in a 24x24x48 enclosure. Lights heat/ t5long uvb bulb & one for the plants.

    • @NeptunetheChameleon
      @NeptunetheChameleon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd try a 60W and bump up to a 75W if need be. Basking temp shouldn't be hotter than 80F.

      Chamelelons will certainly climb them when given the chance. But the material they are made out of can rip out their nails :/

  • @sickchris07

    So if I am using a 60W reptile heat bulb your saying I can use a regular house light bulb of the same wattage.

      Potentially. You'll still need to measure the temperatures to make sure it is producing enough heat.

    I do have a question! My chameleon is estimated around 4-5 months (his body is about 5 inches) and petco gave me live meal worms. I went to a reptile store to check out horn worms, super worms, etc. but they told me to only feed him crickets until he is a year old. I’m just confused now on if I should be feeding him meal worms or crickets?

    • @NeptunetheChameleon
      @NeptunetheChameleon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is garbage advice. You should be feeding your chameleon a variety of feeders. And you should NOT be feeding them mealworms since they have high levels of chitin and aren't very nutritional. There are much better options to feed your chameleon. Check out my video on what bugs to feed a chameleon: th-cam.com/video/9BAs2Os1XN8/w-d-xo.html

    What if you have a Medium size cage how big of a lightbulb do you still need

    • @NeptunetheChameleon
      @NeptunetheChameleon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll want a basking temp of around 80-85F which is usually achived by a 60-75W white basking bulb. And a T5 5.0 linear UVB bulb raised 48" from the bottom of the enclosure.
