      I'm going from the Canon L to this lens. It's on order and going to put my L up for sale soon. Just recently bought the 70-200 G2 - my first off brand lens - and it's turning into a gateway lens into other brands lol. Hoping to replace my 85 1.8 Canon with Tamron's version.

      @@rialbb A great review of Dustin. Let me tell you something. It's not the price always that tells you the good of the lens. Before I make my order I always use to look for reviews. Just compare Tamron and Sigma with Canon when you are looking for lenses.
      Tamron and Sigma lenses are quite good lenses with good qualities and more than $1000 cheaper. My next Macro lens will be the Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro (F017) for Canon after my research and reviews. Hope my hints are helpful. Regards from Curacao Island.

    Thanks Dustin. I just ordered the F017 and am looking forward to its arrival. The slightly longer than normal focal length for standard shooting is always something I've been drawn to...and to add macro capability is an absolute bonus.
    My kit contains Canon 6d, 30d and Rebel 5ti bodies with 14, 24 ts, 17-40, 24-105, 50 stm and 100-400. The 90 macro will really round out my creative choices.
    This was a very factual and accurate review.

    Very nice review. Tamron really stepped up their game in terms of build quality. Mine feels and looks fantastic. I found mine to be a little jerky on the focus ring though. It's very smooth to turn overall but when it comes to fine adjustments, the focus ring tends to jump slightly. I don't know if I bought a lemon but the slight jumping in focusing is noticable in filming at macro distance where the depth of field is so narrow.

    Great review,
    For your info Code F004 is an old version and F017 is a Newer version as you mention.
    Differences are that the Code F004 has a problem with Live View on some Canon Cameras and has no Image Stabilizer.
    The Newer version F017 has no problem with Live View and has builtin Image Stabilizer.
    I did appreciated your way and style to talk about this "State of the Art Macro Lens".
    Everybody is telling that it's one of The Best Macro Lens at the moment and Canon should take this in consideration.
    Hope to get mine very soon.
    Thank you Dustin.

    Wow, another excellent review from Dustin. Very informative especially for us who are looking to buy a macro lens (and will be my portrait prime also). For us shopping, the first question is how does it compare to the gold standard (Canon 100mm L) and you have answered that question. I would have liked to see more footage of the actual usage like how fast the AF is. I have the new 35mm and the speed on that is average. Having said that, I would compromise on speed to have better precision. To your credit you did mention that the 2nd Gen 90mm was already good and this new one even better. I don't think you mentioned if the AF was accurate but if you had no complaints on the previous one and this new one is better then I am assuming no problems there. Keep up the awesome work. Looking forward to the printed article.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +lyndon mendoza The new one is noticeably faster. I mention that it is now as fast as my 100L and perhaps faster to rack the full range of focus.

  • @floex831
    @floex831 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Third-party lenses are the way of the future. First party lenses are slowly becoming a thing of the past. A lot of people are focusing on the camera war i.e. mirrorless versus D-SLR. what we should be focusing on is our lenses and it seems like that issue is bypassing every camera manufacturer. Reason I say this is because the performance that Sigma, Tamron and even Samyang have given us, are also giving us very little reason to go with the first party choices. In these recent cases we get just as good build quality, just as good or very close to the same optical performance as the first party choices and in some cases, at almost half the cost. I sold my Nikon 50 f/1.4 for a Tamron 45mm 1.8, I am far happier because with the Nikon 1.4 was soft in the center, maybe just my copy, and I always found myself at 1.8 anyway. In contrast, the Tamron at 1.8 gives a very good performance. For macro I currently own the Tokina 100 2.8. The optics effortlessly reach those of the Nikon 105mm 2.8

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an interesting perspective. I definitely agree regarding the 45VC. Love the lens!

    • @floex831
      @floex831 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Dustin Abbott I feel like the third parties are mere years from reaching first party quality in terms of build, AF, and optical quality. I don't know if you've ever used the Tokina 100mm Macro, but the optics mean serious business. The AF and build quality are nowhere near that of the Nikon but they do well enough for pro gigs.
      I have come to rely a lot on your reviews, I'd like to see your take on the Tokina 100mm Macro. I am far from a beginner so I don't follow the popular TH-camrs. However, I've compared your results to my first hand experiences and I found myself rarely disagreeing with your reviews, if at all. Ultimately, I decided to subscribe because of that. Thank you for investing so much time in bringing us this great info on lenses. Looking forward to the next one.

    Hi Dustin,
    How does your Canon 100mm f2.8L perform against flare (any ghosting etc.?) compared to this lens?
    And do you think that metal construction of Tamron SP 90mm F017 lens is a bad choice because of the risk of thermal shock?
    One last question, is tripod mount ring on a lens is important or useful for macro photography?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never missed a tripod mount on any macro lens, as they are typically reasonably sized. I don't think the metal construction is an issue at all. As for ghosting or flare - the Canon isn't exempt, but isn't bad, either.

      Dustin Abbott Yes I have been interested in the 15-30mm but I have a 16-35mm F2.8l Mkii all ready and the weight and lack of filters will hold me back from seriously looking at it. • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a complicated subject that a lot of people are confused by. ALL macro lenses have a changed effective aperture at close focus distances (that's physics). For some reason, however, Nikon bodies actually show the closing down aperture on their bodies...but only for the Tamron lens. The physical aperture size doesn't change, however, and is still F2.8. The amount of light that can be gathered at macro focusing distances does change.

    I have the F004 and it is definitely a good lens. However not sure whether my copy of the lens or the design was flawed, I have dust went in into the lens from the front element after just 2 days of use. Since small aperture has to be used during macro photography, the resulting image was ruined. I sent the lens back for cleaning, but was forced to add a UV filter so no more dust will ever get into the lens.. Kind of annoying though.

    Great information and review, Dustin. Currently it goes for about the same price as the Canon 100L and each are about double what the F004 can be purchased for. Would you say they are worth the extra ~$400 CAD and if so, with them being the same price, which would you lean toward? I’ll be using it for product photography and portraits as well as some action. Many thanks.

      If you are on a tight budget, the F004 isn't a bad choice. It's hard to recommend either the newer Tamron or the Canon lenses over the other, as they are both pretty much equally good.

    Hi Justin - Can I ask a question please? I have just purchased this lens and am very happy with one reservation. When framing a shot - with AF & VC activated - if I release the shutter button (e.g. to reframe the shot) the image in my viewfinder shifts position slightly. This doesn't happen when VC is off so I assume the problem is related to the VC mechanism? Are you aware of this issue? Not sure if this is a malfunction but any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Allan.

      I have seen that behavior at times with certain lenses. It's very uncommon with lenses released in the last four years, but not uncommon before that. If it is a very obvious or damaging behavior, I would recommend having the lens serviced or replaced.

Let me tell you I'm really amazed by this lens. I'll still keep the other lens for different purposes, but this Tamron lens is simply amazing for detailed product still shots. My current setup has allowed me to actually go from F16 (from my Micro NIKKOR 60mm lens WITH 5000K background lighting and using my speed lights) to F16 (from my Tamron SP 90mm lens WITHOUT any background lighting and just using my speed lights). One big plus for the Tamron is the compatibility with the Tap In Console - it allows you to tweak a lot of the lens' behavior. The Tamron is a little bit sharper and has better weather sealing. First party lenses tend to have less glitches when you trade camera bodies, though. I honestly don't know which one I would buy if I didn't already own the Canon.

      The Tamron SP 90 2.8 Macro arrived and I absolutely love it! Yes, I can confirm that the VC on this SP lens is louder than on the new Tamron 35, the 45 and the 85. One downside to this lens is the filter size of 62mm. The other three SP primes (35, 45, & 85) have a more common 67mm filter. It really would have been much more practical to have this set of four Tamron SP VC prime lenses with all being the same filter size 67. Additionally, maybe with the bit larger opening, this Tamron 90 Macro would have been as bright, or brighter than, the Canon 100 2.8L IS Macro? I like how you point out this filter size issue on your latest Canon M lens review!

    Thanks for the great review. So, for someone who owns the Canon 100 mm 2.8L, is there a reason to move to this new Tamron?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Anthony Martin I think it is a very strong alternative, but I don't know that it is so compelling that I would recommend selling the 100L.

      +Dustin Abbott Thanks. That's the impression I got from your review.

      +Anthony Martin I think he meant that if you're looking for a good macro, then you could go with this instead of the first party lens. If you have the first party lens then you're fine. I personally use the Tokina 100 2.8. Optically, it easily contends with the Canon 100 L but no IS and the AF is noticeably slower. In my case selling my Tokina may be a good option because of the lack of IS/VR/OS/VC and slower focus speed. That said, I haven't had issues with focusing speed when I do weddings as I don't use it when a lot of subject movement is expected, the only incentive for me would be the VC.
      You get the point.

    Thank you so much, Dustin, for the informative video. My question is will the aperture close, just like the older version, as you focus closer?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All macro lens have smaller effective apertures at macro distances. Canon and Nikon mask that; the Tamron does not.

    • @javadkhaleghzadeh5215
      @javadkhaleghzadeh5215 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick response. I'm really impressed. Actually, I want to make sure I can focus close when shooting portraits (not macro shots necessarily), and still be at f 2.8. I saw some sample close-ups on dpreview which were claimed to have been taken with this lens at f 2.8, while in those macro lenses which extend when focusing close, the maximum aperture of f 5.6 is inevitable.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Javad Khaleghzadeh
      You'll have no such issue at portrait distances. Effective aperture only changes at very close (macro) distances.

    I am tempted to order this lens as my first macro glass. My only fear is that down the road I may be sorry that I didn’t get a longer focal length (ie, 105mm). Thoughts?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt that the difference in focal length is significant enough to change much of anything. It's a beautiful lens, but so is the Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS. Both are roughly equal.

    • @frjeff
      @frjeff 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dustin Abbott Thank you sir, but I shoot a Nikon D7200 crop. So, am comparing to the Nikon 105mm (or lastly: the Sigma 105). Think I’ll likely jump on the Tamron. Great review by the way (and I have subscribed).

    Mr Abbott, I enjoyed your review, but I'm confused.
    dxomark has your Canon macro listed at 3.3 t stops and the last generation tamron at 3.2 t stops.
    certainly the new lens isn't losing over 50% (half stop) more light that the model it is replacing.
    with that said, I'm now really excited to add this to my bag!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Intense Wet Dreams DXO moves in mysterious ways, sometimes. I would think that light transmission, if anything, should be better with this lens, but I did find that variance when testing them in real world usage.

  • @abhilawvlogs

    So out of 100 what would be your score for this tamron lens and 100mm f2.8 IS macro lens from canon.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ABHISHEK PRASAD with price considered I would lean toward the new Tamron, but I'm not really tempted to dump my Canon 100L. The lenses are about equal now. I don't do percentage ratings.

    Hi Dustin. I've been dabbling in Macro photography with extension tubes (on a 50 mm prime), and I'm seriously eyeing up this lens to be used on a crop sensor, but I´ve heard talk about focus breathing with it. I shoot Canon, and their 100 mm macro L is pretty expensive for me, though I'd consider a second hand one. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Focus breathing for what? Video? You get 1:1 reproduction with the Tamron, so you aren't getting focus breathing for stills. I still think this is a great lens for the money.

    • @goldenfrog6EsCoSes
      @goldenfrog6EsCoSes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for your reply. I´m quite new to the concept of focus breathing and had read it was a problem in macro photography. I seem to have been misinformed.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI My reseach leads me to believe that I can get a new Tamron or a used Canon 100 mm L for around the same money. I think I´ll go for the Tamron.

    hi dustin
    wich of the two lenses would i get for macro on a canon crop body , this tamron sp 90mm vc or the canon 100mm L lens , ist really difficult for me ... hope you can help out good sir

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't really have a definitive answer to that question. I don't think one lens is better than the other. Just pick the one that you can get the best price on.
