Does anyone remember trading in the "Homemade Biscuits" crackers labels for Saturday morning matinee movie tickets at Regal theatre, because I do . I saw all my karate movies at Regal (fun times). and I saw My Fair Lady at Premier Theatre (school outing in the 1960's), Sound of Music at Carib Theatre (school, outing 1960's ) Thank you Jamaica. Jamaica land I love
I grew up in the 1970ties on Melrose ave across from Ritz on Maxfield Ave. Every sunday night my grandmother would let us go Ritz. 3 movies showing we were little, so we left after the second. Bolo, red rose, white rose, trinity, Saturday night fever, every karate movie i saw at Ritz. We went to Regal to watch King Kong. Saturday morning, we went to Carib to watch Matinee and, of course, go to tastee at Cross Road to buy Patty before going home. We were young, and we felt safe. I still love my movies.
In the70s students used to be taken to the Carib and Regal theatres to watch movies based on literature texts. Additionally, the Ward was where we went as students to watch Shakespeare plays/movies. Anyone remembers those school trips on the JOS buses to these events?
I remember this very well . My sister & I used to go to Times Store on King St & steal the tickets because they look exactly like the movie tickets.😂😂😂
I remember as a child I was selected to represent my school (St Francis Primary School) at Ward Theatre in a competition where schools around Jamaica would compete in reciting poems. I remember Ward was so majestic and I was in awe. So sorry to hear the state Ward Theatre building is in, hoping it would be restored to its former glory.
Ward, Regal, Carib - I went to them all and remember them well watching Tarzan movies, even the drive in theatre on Washington Blvd in the 60's. I also lived in Vinyard town close to Globe which I believe was an open air theatre because you could always tell when a cowboy movie was playing and there was a bar fight - the whole audience would be participating in the fight making the sounds of people in the movie hitting each other. You could hear it for blocks around. Memories. Thanks for bringing them back.

Beautiful Jamaica way back when, a child could walk alone without worrying, hitch a ride without fear. I remember going to a drive In back in the 50s as a kid. I’m sorry, but life was better before .
Great old days I’ve been to almost all those theaters and I’m just in my fifties, thanks to the greatest father in history, dad took us everywhere god rest his wonderful soul, state and regal was my favorites, triple matinee at Regal and the best kickers at state Odeon was a favorite too and palladium, and dad use to take us to the drive in on washing blvd.

This is such a great history of Jamaica's theatre era. Thank you both for sharing . It was quite enjoyable to hear and see the pictures of those majestic theaters.
I used to live on the edge of Richmond Park by Chisholm Ave and we could see the top of that outdoor theater on Maxfield Ave from the verandah. I also remember Pantomime on Boxing Day at Ward Theater.
Hi: Deluxe was at Three Miles and they used to show triple bill (three movies) on Monday Nights. Ambassador was in Trench Town and I remember watching a movie there about Davy Crockett, the American Folk hero. I think there were several movies about Davy Crockett. I also attended Bevo Theatre in Christina when I lived there in the late 70s early 80s.
During the 60's all the community's in Kingston had their cinema, I lived in Denham Town, we had Ambassador in Trench town , Fats Domino perforned there, and Queens theater on Spanish Town road, those were the days.
Habor View drive in... My aunt's/father's house was right behind the theatre on Copley Drive and we use to sit on the fence and watch the movie without sound... house gone now, sea reclaim the land.
I reside in New York I enjoy these episodes. I also send them to my friend in Florida. We reminisce about the good old days. Keep the videos coming. Thanks

I don't think that the lady has her history too right. Because the last two cinema that was built in Kingston was in New Kingston, The New Kingston Drive-In Cinema that was located on Dominica Drive. You had Cinema 1 and Cinema 2. That is now where you have the New Kingston Mall located.
Omg. Memories. This lady brought back a lot of good memorie of the Jamaica of yesterday. I went to the deluxe threatre. I used to go to matinees on Saturdays. Deluxe used to be at Three Miles. I have been to the Odean, Regal, Carib, the drive-in threatre on Washington Boulevard. I know all of these places that this smart and intelligent lady mentioned/talked about. Lady, you are a classy woman. I missed the good old days of my beautiful Jamaica 🇯🇲. BTW This lady is looking young . She probably in her 70's. Does anyone remember Road House night club? It was right across from Sombrero nigh club. I went to both of these clubs. I was a young teenager. People were respectful back then. I remember as a young teenager I could walk 🚶♀️ freely in Jamaica 🇯🇲 without any fear. I remember the ice cream parlors. The milk shakes that made from malted milk 🥛. There was a Kentucky fry chicken at crossroad. The name was Tops Kentucky Fry. Does anyone remember 🤔 this Kentucky Fry? It was the first and only Kentucky Fry chicken in jamaica 🇯🇲. Sweet memories of yesteryear.
I enjoyed that Also I’m adding Spanish town had 2 theaters Crystal and Astor I remember paying 75 cents to go in and I think the last admission price before the closed down was $4
Was in there jan 1996 watching the professional was up in the balcony but couldnt finish watchin the movie i was roasting up in there had to leave early but $600 was admission dont know what happen later in 1996 but was definately there then
Mona’s became a church. My friend’s mother on Saturdays, dropped us off for Saturday matinees at Premier. Not afraid to leave us there & come back when movies finished.
I went to mostly all those theaters as a child. Carib and Realto was the matinee ones and the others was later in the night. Harbour View Drive Inn was on Sunday Night. Those were the good old days. No fear of walking on the street at night. The only thing people was afraid of was duppy.
I used to mostly go to Queens on spanish Town Road and ambassador in trench Town also tropical on slipe Road ritz on maxfield avenue. I went to Harbour View drive in once, regal was more a uptown cinema, i also went to state and carib. It was a very fascinating time for me as a young boy watching the westerns etc, ambassador had a few unsavory incidents happening there. I used to sell bottles to get my fare to go to ambassador and my uncle would take me to Queens. Those days cinemas was all over Kingston and was the places to go. I never used to go to clubs because I was too young but heard about adastra, glass bucket etc. I was born in Denham Town and grew up in Jones Town where you are surrounded by dance venues like chocomo lawn, foresters Hall, skipper lawn ,ghana lawn etc
Harbaview drive in , my friends house was the place to be across the street we go on the roof and watch movie no sound ,we would get the old am radio and change station until we pickup the frequency that the cars would used.
Back in the 70's as kids we were allowed to go to Carib, Premier and Regal (as per the choice of our mother) but as I got older I went to the theaters with movies that was interested to me: (The Harder They Come at Carib) Queens, but I had to stretch the truth then; those good times and good films to keep people interested and the theaters open! Then there was the "Mid-night movies" 😀🎥🎥🎥🎞🎞🎞🎞 of which I had to walk home as after "NO public Transportation" It was an adventure!
Let's not forget on the radio, we had C B, Charlie Babcock-- the man from Ottawa, Canada, - the Cool Fool with the live jive spinning those records for us. 2) Miss Cecile, I went to a play " The Crucible" at the theatre at St Hughs High School put on by Dennis Scott with the Kingston College students. 3) went to another great student production at St. Andrew Tech ( Bumper Hall). I left JA in 1969, but there was a lively productive Theatre/ Art community --- out of which we got the movie, The Harder They Come. 4) the Queen's Theatre on Spanish Town Rd and Milk Lane sits at the edge of the gully that Ivan ran through in the movie. 5) we can't forget Rex Nettleford snd the Jamaica Dance Theatre and Trevor Rhone. 6) When I was in JA two years ago, I visited the grave of Mr. Ronnie Williams at Heroes Park and paid my respects. His wife, Mrs Ivy Williams, taught at St. Anne's School st North and Bond Sts in Kingston.
Real talk, Ward has great acoustics, I have been onstage at Ward, it has concert hall acoustics. Wailers, Prince Buster, Ken Boothe had Christmas concerts at Ward Theatre.
Here other clubs in that Era, Curphey Place, Sombrero Club, Johnson Drive Inn, Kitties Mat, later on came Stables, Tit 4 Tat, Studio Seven, Boeheima Club, and more.......
Ward Theatre was the venue in 1960 for the Gilbert and Sullivan opera Gondiliers and in 1961 Iolanthe. The actor were all students of St. Hugh's and Kingston College.
I remember the Rialto theatre when I was 3 years old I saw the movie Samson and Deliah my father took me there. Topical, Carib, Odean. Majestic, Regal, State, Palace, Ward Theatre (saw movies and plays there). Remember the Bands and Singers at Carib. I saw Nat King Cole at Carib. Thanks for the memories.
Ward Theater is more than 200 years old, it was moved from Harbour street to north Parade and it burnt down a couple of times, and rebuild back. I was in the 1950s and come see the Theater there, what I useto under that they useto rented the Theater mostly holidays to have pantomime, shows there. Before it was called Patomine back then, they useto called it concerts. My father was born 1919 and he tells about it, before I been to a couple of them. Because I useto helped organized some of those played in my Youth club and, also schools plays.I useto lived next door to a couple theaters, I lived on top of orange street near to Tropical Theater and, also Wards Theater on Camperdown road. I useto pay three pence to go to to watched double bill, on a Sunday it was triple bills. I can write a book about Kingston and st, Andrew, because I lived and worked in the corporate area.
So why not write the book here, it doesn't have to be a book, it could be a podcast, vlog, or some how recorded on Kareems web page. Record your memories some where so future generation may know about the past.
Merritone was a disco owned by the Blake Bros Winston , Trevor, Tyrone and Monte. This sound originated in Morant Bay St Thomas but migrated to Kgn in the 60s played at the turntable club on Red Hills Rd
Really enjoyed this Kareem, so I subscribed. Would like to see more contents like this. When my Mom and Dad went to the dance, the hit song was "honor your mother and your father" by Justin Hinds and the Dominoes.
Carib Theatre was my summer home away from home! 😂 I had a cousin who worked there and she could get me and my brother in for free or half price - admission was between 9 pence to one & thruppence. I think I’ve seen every Christmas Day and Boxing Day stage show Carib ever billed. Ritz was in the Chisholm Avenue/Omara Road area; Johnson’s drive-in was nearby, they made the best Slim Jims and Stout Jims in all of Kingston. Those or Bruces patties were our Sunday treats! Don Drummond lived up the road from us (on Balmoral Avenue). I was quite small but can still remember the commotion on the night he killed his wife/girlfriend; killings/murders were rare occurrences in those days so when it happened the whole community was shaken up. The “Black Maria” came and took him away.
@@dianneellis4061 I don’t remember those, my favourites were always aerated water, ice cream cake and hot buttered popcorn. I can still remember the smell and sound of fresh corn popping! The ice cream cakes were round and had chocolate and vanilla together. You could get them from fudgee, the fudge man, who would walk or bicycle past the house!! What great times those days were!! ❤️🇯🇲❤️🍿🍥🍰🥮🥤📽️🌴🏝️
Those days you could anywhere and walk home at night if the last bus leave you and only afraid of duppy because as young people that is all we afraid of not gunman
There were three theaters on Spanish Town Road. They are Queen in Tivoli area, Majestic in the Maxfield and Spanish Town Road area, and the Deluxe in the Payne Avenue. area by Three Miles.
Great video. Remember the theater in May Pen that was open air? Loved that place, my father used to take me to movies there almost every week. Saw the original Transformers animated movie back in the 80's.
I love it, I really enjoy listening and learning about some of the happenings in Kingston, while I know of the different bands and theater never had the experience, so I love it. Maybe you could do an episode about the riot in Kingston that started out of the university.
Ambassador the right name located at the corner of collie Smith drive and seven street wish the original name was central road and they change it when collie Smith died in England
I never went into State.. it didn’t look right..only kickers anyways. I would rate Regal and Carib as the top 2. Carib No. 1 . I didn’t know it was Rialto on Slipe Pen Road. Went in there once hard benches. Majestic hard benches. 7:287:39
Ward theater use to have film shows ,the last movie i watch there was herculese in the centre of the earth rain fall we get a rain check ticket to come back someother time but no movie ever show there ever again
Responding late so am sure a commentator might have already mentioned. If not, I think the Gilbert & Sullivan opera might be Pirate of Penzance or HMS Pinafore.....there's another that escapes my memory at the moment. Simply love the edifying cultural history of Jamaica shared on Kareem's Quest.
My beautiful memories of Carib Theater. My dad used to take me and my sister there for the Christmas morning show. Then Victoria Pier. You mentioned the tight jeans. It was the Felucchi jeans tight as hell. Saturday morning matinee..triple bill. Food was the best beef sandwich you could ever eat. There was a gentleman who would walk around with a big bag full with free popcorn for the kids. I miss Carib. Regal l liked not as good as Carib. Premier was for theiptown elites. I miss those days. T

This lady was so classy and eloquent in how she put herself over ...sounds like she was a debutant in her time i really enjoyed this .....😊
She went to Boarding School and worked for the Foreign service so you can tell her background and the reason for her eloquence

I rode on the train from Kingston to Montego Bay. Nice ride in the seventies.

Really enjoyed this Kareem, so I subscribed. Would like to see more contents like this. When my Mom and Dad went to the dance, the hit song was "honor your mother and your father" by Justin Hinds and the Dominoes.
I am glad you enjoyed the content
Thank you for the memories?🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲❤️
Loved the St Ann question. Big up my sister Vivienne Grant. Such an outstanding la lady. Baby sis Diana
Yes Diana she talks about you all the while
Carib Theatre was my summer home away from home!
You remember the carib roast beef sandwich ,I used to go😅 just for that❤❤❤
@@dianneellis4061 I don’t remember those, my favourites were always aerated water, ice cream cake and hot buttered popcorn.
Our ice cream man would sing and shout....ooo we have the ice cream, fudge and royal chakamooo!!!!😅
Globe Theater was located in Vineyard Town off Deanery Rd.
There was Deluxe theatre on Spanish Town rd not far from the roundabout near Kelly’s drinks factory

A drive in was also in New kingston
I love it, I really enjoy listening and learning about some of the happenings in Kingston, while I know of the different bands and theater never had the experience, so I love it. Maybe you could do an

Responding late so am sure a commentator might have already mentioned. If not, I think the Gilbert & Sullivan opera might be Pirate of Penzance or HMS Pinafore.....there's another that escapes my memory at the moment.
