Dystonia, Head Tremors, and Depression

  • About six months ago my head started shaking. At the time, it was so mild, no one could notice it. It was just a light shaking sensation. But it has progressively become worse. I am in a constant state of shaking my head "no". This past week I was diagnosed with "cervical dystonic tremors", also refered to as dystonia. Which, as Dystonia.org puts it, dystonia is " a neurological disorder where incorrect messages from the brain cause muscles to be over-active resulting abnormal postures or unwanted movement."
    Aside from that, I have battled depression my entire life. Id really, honestly love to know if anyone else out there is expereincing this too. I know I can't possibly be alone in these symtpms. And if you do expereince depression, dystonia, or temors, what have you found that works??

    Thanks for sharing publicly your story. I am sorry that you are so young. You are not alone. I have the same issues. But I am 50 years old. I found that the amplitude of tremor mainly depends from sleep , rest and stress. (I also have orthostatic tachycardia syndrome all my life. Diagnosed before dystonia+ head tremor). I wish you the best. I am teacher in school. My work helps me to resist and not become unsociable because of this. . the students, colleagues etc are accepting me as I am. So I am lucky for this .

    I just watched your video and I have to say that I am in the process of researching this. I have been going through some of this for sometime now and I just said to myself that it will pass. It hasn't and I also get individuals looking at me like like I am nervous, but I feel the head tremors. I thank your for taking the time out and speaking about this as more people can be aware of this. I had experienced depression for most of my childhood up until I was 18. but after that I have not. I want to get this checked out and see what can be done.

    I've also been diagnosed with cervical dystonic tremors. My head shakes in the same motion as yours, but maybe a little more severe. I'm 41. I first noticed the tremor at age 19. My mother has the same issue. She has never been diagnosed. It gets progressively worse with age, and my head shakes worse than my mother's did when she was my age. I decided to look for answers in 2017, at the age of 40. I'm so tired of the embarrassment. I don't get out much because of it. I feel like people stare and judge. I'm very self-conscious. November 2017, I received my diagnosis. I naturally have low blood pressure, so most of the meds prescribed to treat my symptoms are off limits. I've been getting the botox every 3 months - but it wears off after 6 weeks, and then the tremor is full force. I take primidone at night, which helps a little for the next day. I've tried a CBD vape pen, that calmed my tremor a little, but took my energy. I sleep full and well. I eat smart. I exercise regularly. My tremor just won't stop. I cry about it a lot. Years ago I was diagnosed with bi-polar 1 & 2, borderline personality disorder, major depressive disorder, and anxiety. I do see a connection with my emotions and tremor. When I'm going through emotional turmoil, my tremor owns my head. I'm a severely emotional person, so I'm basically screwed. I take 450mg 3x's daily of a mood stabilizer for my bi-polar, and that also contributes to my tremor. My neurologist is awesome and takes his time to listen. My next appointment, we will be setting up an appointment for DBS. Under the knife might seem extreme for some - but I'm willing to try anything to calm this embarrassing tremor. Thanks for sharing. ❤

    I'm so happy I found your videos. Was googling Dystonia at 4am (should be sleeping) and watched one of your latest vlogs then started back at the beginning. I've been recently diagnosed too with cervical dystonia and kept thinking I had a pinched nerve or was stress related or something that would go away...but was getting worse so went to the doctor who referred me to a neurologist. Pretty much the same as yours but not constant at this stage. He gave me a prescription for medication the second time I went back but not keen on that option so was googling for natural remedies and found you 🤗. Thank you so much for vlogging I will watch all your videos...I too have autoimmune issues (Coeliac, arthritis and sjogrens) all manageable but this head shaking was getting me a bit worried ...the joy of life. 😊

      Thank you for being brave and sharing your story! It is scary, but I do believe that different treatments can help SO much. My shaking is still present, but very very rare at this point. It starts back up randomly, (when I am stressed, when I have strained a muscle, when I have too much caffeine). But when it gets too bad I go to therapy again

    We love you . Thanks for sharing your experience. I do believe if you can train your brain to let go it could help .I’ve had head tremors and was triggered by anxiety. I knew what my trigger was and gave thought to my anxiety. I promised myself that I would not fear or feel inferior to anyone or anything. I’ll embrace my life and death and trained myself to the best of my ability to overcome that . I still have things to overcome and I know there is a spectrum to ailments ( and everything else) , but tackle one thing at a time and be aware of what you give your attention ( give a f()$& to) to. Best of luck. Im rooting for you. And most of all try to relax . If someone brings you a problem tell them that’s terrible and offer them a piece of pie.

    Thank You so much. I have been diagnosed with Cervical Dystonia and Dystonic Tremor. I have had this for several yrs, finally went to a Dr. and had MRI no tumor. I was so glad to hear that. They say I also have Essential Tremor in my hands. Yes I have depressing moments, don't go out except if I need to and love to walk my dog. I couldn't take my head shaking anymore, was so hard to read. Drove me nuts. So my Dr. sent me to another and I am now receiving Botox treatments. They go in the back of my head and neck. She started with a low dosage the first time. I felt so good. 4 months or 3 can't remember, went with same dosage cus I did have trouble swallowing, so that's why she went with the same dosage again, did not work at all. So on my follow up appmt, she said she will increase it, just had it done last week and it helped. I'm going to do it again in May I think, I will have to look it up. But I am so glad I found You and listened to You. You looked good to. Someone said to me one day I looked stupid walking around with my head tilted, but that was my way of keeping my head from shaking. Yes Botox has helped me. But thank You Sweetie. I know I'm not alone. God Bless💕

    • @LifeWithUs
      @LifeWithUs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have found music to be so cathartic in that sense. Although, I can lose myself to emotions if I choose the wrong music. I think certain songs arent safe for me to listen to, sometimes. In the sense that, if Im struggling with depression- you know, teetering on the line between "ok" and "not ok", certain songs pull me down. I probably sound like a lunatic. But my point is that you really need to know yourself, know when your low and counteract it with the things you know that work, avoid the things that sink you.

    I know this is an old video, but I’m glad I stumbled upon this because I think this is what’s going on with me. I’ve had tremors for almost a year now, starting with my left hand only. Now it’s both hands and at all times everyday, except when at rest. I get these tremors in my legs sometimes, my eyelids, but I’ve also noticed I have a tremor in my head, a very mild one, but it’s there. Essential tremor was my first diagnosis but my neurologist said no to that and is currently suspecting Wilson’s disease. I also have never felt like I’ve been truly happy. The depression has always been bad. I am an isolator.

    Your video just touched me entirely...The tremors, manic depression, anxiety, and ptsd do NOT mix...My mom has REALLY bad tremors, as do a couple other of my siblings...in some theyre less, in others more...NOW, as I age (31 soon) I notice its getting worse...some days are much better than others, but my head, hands, and sometimes body shake...especially when anxious...Right now im in the process of trying to figure out what triggers/helps ease them...Im also planning to talk to my doctor about it as well, bc neurological problems run through my family (both sides)...At the moment im tackling a few other medical issues, which has me frazzled...I will say it's tough...ive broken down several times about it in the recent months, but I dont want to think that this is or has to be my fate...I feel you so much! Thank you for this video...I know it was posted years ago...So if you dont mind my asking...How are you these days? Has it bettered or (hopefully not) worsened? How have you coped?

I have tremors in my neck and jaw, and also I'm struggling with depression and anxiety and just feeling very tired in general, often (I had to quit acting school because it got so bad). For me I've been going to an amazing neuro chiropractor who helps me reduce the tremor with specific eye movement exercises. I've also tried acupuncture and it helped with the tremors for a little while and a lot with the anxiety and feeling less tense. I really hope they'll find a cure for this because it's really not a fun thing having to live with. Sending you lots of good thoughts from Norway!!

    I have uncontrollable head nodding and shaking for a long time. I have had anxiety attacks well over a decade. I can relate. I got into a car accident two years ago while I was extremely dependent on alprazoram and lorazepam. It was an eye opener to detox. But after that accident while therapy and detoxing from those meds I started have head shakes when I try to sleep. It’s been hard. Sometimes when I get tired as the day wears on the head shaken starts causing me to have tightness in my chest and I started hyperventilating mildly and become irritable easily and get angry. It gets to a point it affects my depression. I do feel like ending it all. I have had depression bouts. I haven’t gotten diagnosed but the last two years I’ve been working out and losing weight. Stress caffeine and lack of sleep do compound it. I took a sleep study recently and also I am starting to change dieting to where I stay away from fried/fast food and more home cooked meals. I am starting to look at what makes me stay up/ stress me out/ why I make bad food choices. Hang in there we all have different struggles. Glad to find your channel

    Thanks for talking about this. I'm 29 and have been diagnosed with cervical dystonia for about a year now. It's really uncomfortable sometimes, kind of like my neck is getting a work out and embarrassing to be in social situations, so anxiety and depression for me is a definite. I just wish I could reduce the shaking even if just a little bit. A neurologist offered Botox, but I'm not ready for that. The potential for paralysis scares me.

      @LifeWithUs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kelly Dyer oh my goodness! I can completely relate! That's exactly what I was going through. I had the option to do the medication (which basically makes you too lethargic to shake), or botox (in my neck! ? ummm...no)
      Thankfully I found a phenomenal physical therapist. Today I am shake free. It does come back, and when it does, I go see her again. I've been making videos on everything we do in our session. I've already had other TH-camrs say they've tried it and it worked for them too! I'm not a doctor, so I can't treat, diagnose, or cure (lol, that's my disclaimer) but it's definitely worth looking into. I'm here if you have any questions 😁

      They do often embarrass me, but I have to remember that the stress of embarrassment will make the tremors worse. Also, trying to keep my head still activates muscles that initiate tremors. So only the more I relax does it start to get any better. Does that make any sense? Its hard to explain

But I realized it was therapeutic to be able to talk about all the health issues and challenges. And it was so comforting to find others that are enduring the same challenges. Soon it became comfortable, and I could be myself. 🤣 I even posted a video when I was super sick and looked awful. But I felt like being completely transparent was helpful to others. Just for everyone to see that I have good days and bad days, and sometimes REALLY bad days. Being able to relate to someone is huge, I think.

    First of all, you are really cute talking about problem you have:)
    I'm 21 year old guy who is having similarly problem as yours. It all started when I was 16. As I remember, I came from a party and went to sleep but my head started to shake and it wasnt easy to fall asleep(can you answer me, is this how it started to you as well?). After that, problem started to appear at hairdressers. Since then my head is shaking when I'm having a haircut or when I'm having speech, generally when I'm nervous. Or when I'm drinking in public, that moment when a bottle is near my mouth.
    Have you found a solution to this? Thank you.

    • @LifeWithUs
      @LifeWithUs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      klzTV thank you for commenting! My shaking started while sitting in a college lecture. I was trying to stay still and quiet. Then, as you mentioned, it was very noticeable during haircuts. I sometimes talk publicly, and then it really starts shaking.
      I have seen doctor's, neurologists, movement disorder specialists, a chiropractor and a physical therapist. Out of everything, what helped me the most was seeing a physical therapist. She is amazing. She located the spasming muscle and applied pressure to it. She said she was "resetting the muscle". She held it firmly for about 10 minutes. When she stopped my shaking had instantly reduced by 80+%

    • @LifeWithUs

    I had my neurologist check yesterday and was diagnosed with essential tremor. I was hoping the neurologist would say that it's stress but the clinical diagnosis of essential tremor it was. I tried to ask if this could escalate by time but I felt she kinda avoided to answer. She said it doesn't have to. I felt she tried to downplay it, but when I started reading abut it I got depressed cause it said the condition increases the chances of getting Parkinson with 50% and that it starts gradually. Don't wanna look to negative on this but I'm down. I have the head shakes and sometimes my hands twitches. Sometimes my leg suddenly twitches too, but its mainly head tremors. I can feel it tremble when I lay my hand on my neck, there's activity going on in there. Alcohole reduces the tremors, same with benzo's. Stress is like gasoline and increase the tremors.

    • @Matt-yw2oi
      @Matt-yw2oi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ventende hi ventende, I’m curious what it was you read that said it increases the risk of getting Parkinson’s.. WebMD (among many others) state clearly that as of right now there is no clear evidence supporting this. I haven’t been diagnosed with this yet, mainly because I don’t want to pay the bill but I am sure this is what I’m experiencing, I’ll go soon enough to find out but try not to stress more as we know stress fuels it. I wish you the best with managing your symptoms and everything will be okay :). Stay safe during the virus, everything will be alright.

    • @Underhills
      @Underhills 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Matt-yw2oi Thanks for your reply. It's been 7 months since my initial post and things have changed. I never trusted that essential tremor diagnose because that neurologist never asked me about my medication history. I always felt that the assessment was too quick. Now that I have read up on benzo withdrawal symptoms I believe my tremors can be caused by that. I'm still tapering off Xanax after 23 years of weekly intake. I decided to get a second opinion with another neurologist that did NOT believe the first neurologist made the correct diagnose - actually I've had two assessment done by another neurologist now, the last one was just couple of weeks ago. He wants to bury the ET diagnose I was given. We talked about hypersensitive Gaba receptors and muscle reactions / tension in direct conjunction with mental stress and benzo withdrawal. He also ruled out any other common neurological disease. He's not 100% sure what causes my tremors but his theories was withdrawal, hypersensitivity, anxiety. Basically a very heightened fight or flight response mechanism.
      I'm still not sure what to think of all this but I'm much more in line with the second opinion and there are some literature that supports his theory. My head and neck tremors are worse than ever but then again I'm further into my tapering plan now and I'm down to a very minimal dose of Xanax, so I should expect a ruff physical response to that. Next step is zero amount. It's hard.

I was healthy 4 months ago, now I have lost myjob and heard I might lose my eye sight, looks like i have IIH too to much CSF that dr says needs to be idk drained, I hate that my boys see me weak some days,, my life has completely changed. I would love to chat more, as I am on this journey and feel very isolated. Questions like how did this happen what triggered it.. I have found out it is a gene. One parent has it. My father hands tremor, and my sisters hands tremor. I got the cervical kind I guess🤔 It can be painful, and tiresome.. If I do to much in a day, Im paying for the next. Im holistic so all these meds they keep trying to put me on, hasnt been making me happy either. I believe in CBD oil.. my facebook has alot of awarness on it and they have dystonia groups on fb that has been helping me too.. Pinterest has good reads on this disorder. Glad to meet you and love and light to my fellow head shaker😚 my sons always ask me questions and i. Amor, I was fortunate enough that physical therapy treated my tremor. I went to physical therapy appointments once every week for about 6 weeks, then alternated, for about 6 months. My tremors are still there. When the shaking gets really bad I have to do the pressure point on my neck again.

    I am sorry you are suffering this way.
    Have you tried any oral medications? I have neck jerking movements on occasion (not quite a tremor, yet...) and since I have started Clonazepam 0.5 mg/day they have reduced by about 95%... This is of course not a long term solution because benzos are destructive and addictive.
    Has your doctor suggested any oral medication besides benzos? Such as propranolol?
    BTW do not think you will have this forever. This is 2016 and modern medicine is a wonderful thing. Keep your head up, you will get through this eventually!

      My doctor did recommend benzodiazepines, but for me that's not an option. I am going to post another video soon about the physical therapy sessions I have been doing. The physical therapist found my spasmodic muscle, and disengaged it by applying pressure for ten minutes. I kid you not, the shaking reduced about 90% for the rest of the day.
      I still have my doubts about this being dystonia. I just can't seem to get any doctor's to agree.

      First, thank you so much for commenting. Yes, my shaking is exacerbated by three things that I have noticed: caffeine, adrenaline, and stress. The depression and anxiety can be a byproduct of the dystonia, but it can also make it much worse. Stiffening up doesn't stop the shaking, but it makes each shake hurt worse.

I stayed there alone and almost nobody talked to me. My head is pulling to the right. I didn't have a mirror butI knew my head was in the wrong position. I had to support my head with my hands. The only thing someone said to me was: "Why your neck is strange?" . I told them about the disease but after that they went to another part of th table. Even people that I knew before ignored me. You know, they arrived and passes at my side and just igored me, like if my chair was empty. I became realy sad about this. I have ever helped those people when they needed and now they just ignore me. That's why I don't like to go to this places, because when I go away Ibecame kind of depressed because of this. I've never met anyone else with dystonia. I was diagnosed with a mild form of dystonia when I was 13 and I'm a few months from 32. It's been nearly a decade since I've tried any treatments. It was mostly pills that had the unwanted side effect of drowsiness. I'd say I've been able to cope just fine, but then again my case is considered mild. The dystonia only seems to effect the right side of my body, mainly my right hand. It always wants to contort to the right, and I have tremors. I used to love to play the guitar but it seems to be getting more and more difficult to play. I don't seem to have the same flexibility or the dexterity that I used to have to move my wrist in a strumming fashion. Just thought I'd share

About MRI scan, I thing they do it because the reason behind this kind if tremor is some chemical imbalance in brain or slowdown of some chemical pathways in brain so they need to understand the real reason. Now I want to ask you about your tremor because I think I have it and I want to know more about it, does it develop with time, does it cause pain, can you mask it if it happened in public, do you have some ways to stop it? Forgive my weak English language and Thank you for doing this video and I hope that you live happy good life.

    I have experienced head and shoulder tremors on occasions. I almost daily have what I call head buzzing which is a sensation in my head of a vibrating brain. Very fast and constant When that gets really bad I start to have visually noticeable head tremors. It will also involve my shoulders of I try to hold my head still. The only things that I've found that have helped are benedryl sometimes helps and low dose Klonapin. Both are sedatives in a sense and calm the nerves. I've gotten an all clear from a neurologist twice that it's not Parkinson disease or MS. Or anything degenerative. So far all I've been told is that it must be caused by anxiety. Although anxiety can make it worse it will start up randomly whether I'm anxious or not. I'm gluten intolerant and it helps keep things at bay avoiding gluten. Sometimes caffeine will get it started. The other day I was doing easy yoga and out of nowhere I got super dizzy that turned into tremors. I'm researching FND. As that seems like a lead in the right direction. Thank you for being brave enough to share your story. Are you on any prescription medications? I have a similar symptom, which I also refer to as "brain zaps". The best way I can describe it as the same buzzing sensation you get when you put your tongue on a 9-volt battery. I continued researching this odd symptom and found a huge number of people ALSO experience this. It is a common symptom of antidepressants. Strange right?

    • @justjess1111

      Thank you for your kind words. Yes I have taken antidepressants. Paxil and then Prozac. I'm not on any currently. I've read about people and their brain zaps in my search. Tell me does your brain zap come suddenly then go away? My bussing starts and will last all day. It doesn't go away. It reminds me of when you hear cicadas singing however there is no sound is just that vibration feeling.

      OK MEEEE TOOO! I’ve searched everywhere to see if anyone else experiences vibration and rumbling sensation and shaking of the brain almost. My head doesn’t move much, it’s all inside the head almost. It mostly happens at night or when I’m laying down.

      @@bridarby2299 I found that mine was TOTALY stress and worry related. I was tensing up all day and holding my "shaking" and "tremor" like behavior thru my neck all day...and then at night its like my neck relaxed and it would make my head rumble. Its hard to explain but that was TOTALY the issue.
      Long story short, I thought I had cancer and had to have a risky surgery and was SO scared to not and or to have it. Once I had it, it went away. THEN once I worried again post surgery complication, it came back.

    I seem to have a yes yes tremor. Today i was in a coffee shop in my local town and when i try to drink from the cup my head starts nodding yes yes. In the end i got a straw and used it to drink my coffee. It looks like i have dt's like people get withdrawing from alcohol, i was aware people were looking and were probably thinking that. I dont have it all the time, only when reaching. My neck muscles and shoulders muscles are really tight and it hurts to turn my head either way.
    I seem to get the odd shaking of my hands too. In parkinsons you get tremours at rest apparenly but i havent got that.

    • @LifeWithUs

      Those two symptoms could be related, or they may not be related. When I first went to the doctor they had me take an MRI to make sure the tremor wasnt caused by something serious, like a brain tumor. It is a good idea to rule out the more serious things.
      When you open your jaw do you hear a pop, or click? I have heard a few people say that they have Migraines, and tremors, an they were diagnosed with something called TMJ. They used a TMJ mouthpiece and it helped their migraines and stopped their tremors.
      The things that I have heard most people say makes their tremor worse are: fear, pain, cold, anxiety, stress, adrenaline (caffeine)
      All of these things affect your muscles and heart rate.
