One thing you can take away from watching these old films is not a lot has changed in the way dealerships sell automobiles. You can walk into any dealership today and this is the same exact kind of tried and true tactic that is used. Proving once again that the more things change the more they remain the same.
I think auto sales are more transactional now... They get you on the "extras" like extended warranties, and waxing and stuff :) They know people call around now and can really compare... The internet has certainly shook things up. I think we are close to the same "price" for every vehicle... no more wiggle room but I'm sure the dealers are like F THAT i want to be able to make more money.
I worked in a used car lot when I was in high school. The sign out front said, "Cars bought and sold." A guy would come in looking to sell his car. A salesman would be standing around the showroom and would act like his time is being wasted. He will grind it out until the customer finally names his price for his car which is always too high. When a customer bought a car, my job was to put his license plates on it and bring it out front and leave it running. This would always be late on Friday or Saturday. The customer would drive away, the sales staff would close the business immediately and go home. If the car broke down, the customer was screwed. There were no consumer protection laws 50 years ago. There was a Corvette that sat in the garage for months as it had electrical problems. The answer was always "We just got that car in and we haven't had a chance to clean it up." They finally fixed what was wrong and found a chump to buy it. AHB Motors on Merrick Road in Amityville, New York.
@@autochronicles8667 I've always wondered why buying a new or used car from a dealer has to be such a process. I've never had to do it, always buying cars privately.
Trade in TACTICKS! (TRICKS) Charge the most for the least....new car. Pay the least for the most, used car! Screw the customer coming and going and thats how auto dealerships end up so large and profitable!
LOL I've seen some car salesman get REALLY ticked when you do this... Actually what I did once was see a guy shopping for a car in a 86 Fiero GT sitting in the isle and he was next to it... I asked "are you trading that in? How much? 3500$"... LOL I said ill give you 4500$... The dealer got really p*ssed when he found out I bought the car out from under him... the car was easily worth 6k...

"Let" the BUYER state his figure first :)
“The ‘54 Ford was just a warmed over ‘53 and I am just not impressed! I think I’ll just go have a look at the Studebakers and the Kaisers!”
It did have a new engine and suspension...
The days before they had Tru-Coat to work with...
I don’t know if you have seen the latest season of Fargo, but Tru-Coat was mentioned.
We had a deal! You said could we could have the car with the sealant for 19 5!

Give me my damn checkbook. Let’s get this over with.
I have just been schooled on how to be a car salesman, I'm sure those basics still apply but now days there are lots more involved
Never show your cards first... and honesty? eh... its over rated :)
also shown how to be a better buyer...
Fuck the dealer! Keep your old car as long as you can and don’t buy that new E crap they are pushing.
Lucky I just got rid of my old fart engine crap and can now travel more comfortable with my electric car. Also, no nonsense with dealers.
Very sad. People then & now believe being a salesman is a profession. What do they actually add other than cost?

I went for a course to become a salesman, but they tried to cut my soul out. I escaped and never went near that dealer ever since for anything.
They're there because you can't buy direct from manufacturer. it's illegal for car manufacturers to sell direct to the public.

Yeah some crazy stories from car dealerships :) I've seen fist fights in show rooms :)

Some dealerships seem REALLY profitable... I mean I have seen some multi millionaire dealership owners from a small town dealer...
Step 1: Rob
Step 2: Steal
Step 3: Cheat
Step 4: Grift
Hold on; I thought they were talking about salesmen, not politicians.
@@kevinmoffatt politicians are salesman of a higher level...lol

Isn't it universally known that you never mention you have a trade-in until you've settled on a price for the new car?
