Great video. I too agree with the comments about the Houbens. Houben didn't work for me. I got Janssens...Hofkens and one or two crosses with Busschaerts and/or Stassarts. I prefer Janssen/Hofken cross as they work very well for me as short and middle distant sprinters.... mostly blues and checks. I would say this to new fanciers in the sport. How you obtain your pigeons, you ought to know what you want out of the sport.... I mean long distance flyers or sprinters. Do Not place value on a pigeon that has a "name" to it. Test your birds to see what they are made of. Let the basket/crate do the culling for you.
Colin McKenzie thanks for this comment. I’m new to pigeons and got my first pair a few months ago. Have one baby so far and a pair of eggs due soon. I don’t want to get a lot of pigeons and get overwhelmed while I learn.
@@DoggMannTru That's great buddy. If you don't want to be overwhelmed by your birds, you have to decide on how many pigeons you can take care of and take into consideration the size of your loft. 🙏
Colin McKenzie yessir appreciate that. I can’t wait to test them and see how they do. I guess the name isn’t important it’s more how they do. I have a small loft now it’s only about 4*8*8 and need to make a second one for the babies now. I think maybe 10-20 would be plenty while I figure out how things work.
@@DoggMannTru Yes. You're quite right as names are not that important. The basket or crate will let you know who is performing. Let me say this. If you're into sprinting, go for sprinting pigeons. E.g. Janssen based pigeons is an example.
On another note, your loft could easily hold 16 pigeons comfortably. I too have a loft measuring 13L x4W x7 high and have a total population of 24 pigeons. The more room you have, the better your birds will look and feel...no stress. By all means, build another loft for the young birds. Good luck in the sport buddy.

Good introduction to new folks in the game. Me personally I stay away from the hype lines. People hype them up and they cross these lines into random lines. Its about trying to breed for the distance
Well done Jose!.. Those are very good lines indeed! I also like the Koopman Van Loons and Hofkens blood.. With that said, viewers should know that certain bloodlines that fly well in one particular part of the country, may not fly well in another. Some courses that clubs and combines fly are much easier with faster times than say a few on the west coast of California and Oregon where big mountain ranges must be negotiated by the birds on race day, including hot temps, and headwinds most of the time from flying an east course. The birds must be tough as well as smart and have great stamina in their genes..
its hard to cover all the details. The good thing about hofkens is that they are like a 4x4 Ferrari! all terrain! i need to make some more videos like this i cant get over the fact i posted it this morning on a weekday and its already got 2300 views.
This is true! The Hofkens blood can do it all and win from 150 to 400 miles and yes, they are the 4x4's of the pigeon world for sure.. The reason for the high viewer counts my friend is that it's Racing Season! :-) By the way, the iPigeon site is a good place to find very good birds at a reasonable price. I check out that page a couple of times a week, after the new birds are posted on Sunday evening..

What more do you wanna know? So is pigeon racing about mystic, old bloodlines, new ideas or management?.... I am not sure but for fun I went thru a loft of 'railway pigeons' and selected on shape, feather eye and 'black magic'.... not sure what the black magic was but it made me happy... and I was successful... up to my standards but I sure scared the living bejabbers out of those with 'classical lines'..... Excellent video but a bit long, I've been around pigeon my whole life and I am in my 60's. What I have found is people get fixated on strain and pedigree. A pedigree is only as good as the person writing it and a strain is usually an old name put on pigeons. I prefer a family find one that works for you rather than names

I agree with you, I'm 70 years old and raced pigeons all my life... You can buy the best bloodlines in the world and win Nothing!!!..save your money and learn about pigeons health , training, diseases, diet and you will win!!..learn how to be a coach, know your birds, know when to push them and when to back off!!..sit in the coop with them and hand feed them peanuts as a treat...never ever scare them or chase after them around the loft, pigeons have to feel totally safe in their coop..always keep your coop clean at least once a day or twice a day if possible...A dirty coop , bad ventilation, poor diet must be avoided at all cost!!..you have to remember that if you have alot of pigeon dust in your coop that is going to get into your birds lungs , you can't expect a pigeon to race at it's best if it has a respatory problem , I don't care what bloodline it's from, your not going to Win!!...enjoy you birds and have fun .. I wish you all the best!!

We made a cross of a houben with a bird from Aztec loft and win first place and second place 500 miles. With a brother and sister from the Same nest.
used to come together in all races

"young artist" seems very good from pair I have, except these are terrible parents in six months about since hen started laying every couple weeks, before recent couple months. step by step theyre/she is getting better!

@@homingpigeonraces update, I looked back at source, and young artist in English, basically taken back, has same name meanings and pronouncing as old dutch/German and french name. The houbens say and show records that their lines especially "young artist" "ziko" and "mona lisa" came out of, were Jansens that basically almost all good modern stable "United Statesian's" lines come down from, because they keep quality when inbreeding line breeding or cross breeding to other lines, but houbens do inbreed best seems needing to cross breed rarely back to other close tightly inbred lines before breeding back in again. Hofkens also are a Jansen family bird the Jansens bought in then lost and got back then resold offspring to back and fourth with hofkens over years. I was just boning up on my birds history (looking up "van loon" history for friend that breeding her my whites, which date back to hofkens and Jansens as well) and saw some new info from Jansens that translated as some not so tight lipped anymore about and looking in records as some family unfortunately passes on to other things one way or another. Good birds are good birds, and slot depends on genes and how breeders kept them up. My straight import Jansens, seen all parents and grandparents awards pedigree info etc (I got two young pair because he had emergency and just missed banding them so couldn't race them, but couldn't waste blood by culling or selling cheap, being priced cheap enough at two hundred dollars each, he eventually after hanging talking and helping him lil out, gave these young birds to me for only twenty, what was originally going to be for pair of old white hofkens, or three mismatched squeakers, one from top breeding/racing hen, two others off same parents of these, just taken off floor nests to sell that where laid also as was out of town but got back in time to band and guy never met him to buy), n they are huge young, compared to my twice age "young artist" and "hofkens", and larger than my year and half old "van loons". The guy got the Jansens off of actively races and said they race any which way day weather age and distance, where the houbens generally have least n best conditions told by people and houbens say their lines are straight shot fair weather birds of varying distances and speeds. Hofkens are not nearly as inbred and was a great foundation cock and two first young so on in their overall modern successes so far as consistent records, and before the brothers went over more to doing "tricks" like widow racing, flying hungry, pumping up prior etc.

We race in Tampa Bay, this year We got second best bird of the year. Second place Tampa bay club all flowing with houbens, cross Janssen and hofkens my houbens came from never say day bloodline south African million dollar winner 🏆 Basically Ziko john's artist .

Very good video for new flyers. But I think it's 25% bird and 75% handler. Now with this said you can buy the best pigeon in the world but if you don't know how to manage it, you will still be at the bottom of the sheet on race day. Spend some time with the old timers in the club learn how (they do it) to manage your birds and save your money. Remember a paper bag will blow a hundred miles. Lol

This is why you see a newby flyer who comes into a club and receives or buys very good birds his first season and somewhat kicks ass, and then, the second year he starts hitting the bottom of the sheet because his experience as a flyer is subpar and unknowledgable and those good birds slowly went down hill. His first year success was pretty much the birds doing what they already have been bred to do and that's fly..

most people don't care they just want to fly the birds. I think less than 3% of pedigrees are wrong and perhaps 1 in 200 is actually maliciously done to cheat people. If your pedigree is from a serious fancier i don't see a fancier like GFL or any other large pigeon farm screwing themselves in the long run over a dollar now. you really have to know the reputation of your breeder. some breeders inspire faith others inspire lack of confidence. Joe sorry i took down your last comment the C word not welcome on this channel. its 2017, and not everyone who watches thinks its okay to kill an animal just because its not up to par with your standards. I will say this tho, I have yet to see a person here in Florida among my associates who practices this. the races are hard even when they are fast, if a bird sucks it will find its own path no need to manually or deliberately rid of a bird. Besides, its a common practice that is beneficial to the sport, to give young people a bird as a pet. will they ever be good, probably not but it keeps a young person out of trouble and helps them become pigeon lovers. regardless my opinion doesn't matter, I don't allow that subject on my channel because certain people are watching and reading and they wont make a fool out of me. thanks and agree with your comment about birds from Europe.

I have Clausings Houbens 2 sons of 410 one of them is inbred and I do have a daughter of Never Say Die and I do have Jonge Arties blood in my loft and also 1 Inbred to Zikko bloodline I've sent 2 of its youngster to Guadalajara Jalisco Mx. So from the inbred to Zikko one of his youngsters that I sent to Guadalajara got the 56th High Point Bird overall or Average speed bird or Ace Pigeo whatever you'd like to call it competing vs 16000 YB this last year 2018. To me Houbens are one of the best bloodlines... Have u heard about Mr. Aristona bloodline they have done well for me making it to the Top 10 vs 20000 close to 30000 YB ....

I have a hard time believing anyone who claims they have a certain bloodline without certification. So many pigeon handlers these days are newbies and will say anything to feel good about their birds. Unfortunately the pigeon hobby is a dying sport. My opinion here in the USA people are trying to become rich by selling the weed out birds. My opinion just because a bird comes from a champion doesn't mean that it will be a champion or ever produce champions. I also believe people will not sell there champion because that's ridiculous to sell your foundation. You breed from stock and wait to see who is the next runner up. My opinion is 90% of the time you buy a bird without certification you are gambling with your money and buying a racer pigeon for a lot of money that hasn't been proven. Its like buying a used car without a test drive. My opinion is any bird without a certificate of proven winning should sell no more than $20. If you asking for more than that than the buyer should have the right to take it out for a test drive. Go out a 100 miles if the seller claims to have good quality and release with buyer to witness the bird speed. Clock the bird to see the speed time and then you can negotiate high prices. If you buy a bird for really cheap and it wins a big race for you then be a good Stewart and pay the seller for his honesty and friendship. There's to many frauds in this hobby and liars. Prove what you have before putting a high price tag on it. That's how the Texas guys do it.

I like the cannibal + muleman cross and also like imbrechts and staff van reet , now one thing guys need to know is that staff van reet and imbrechts are some of the best pigeons lines but they're not that popular because germain imbrecht from Belgium will not sell his birds even when the Chinese would flock his loft with blank checks. I have a son of miss proposal staff van reet and it's a winning blood line, when the Chinese got into pigeons the went to Belgium with millions of dollars and some breeders took advantage and made a killing but germain imbrecht would kick them out of his house, true story. he bred 3 of the top 10 birds in Belgium history, like the spoir, little pitit Barcelona. facts !!there is a reason why everyone has jansen, hofkens van denavile and all these other over bred lines! I'll stop lol too long of a comment , I should start my own channel, I can talk bloodlines for 2 years straight lol

$1.200 for one bird? For a starter that's ridiculous. To start pigeon racing or being involved in the fancy in general regardless of breed ...... it's not about the money. As some of the old timers in your first video said ... it's not about money or winning ... it's about the enjoyment & commadaderie. You should stick to that advice before you go off making videos like this. Bloodlines are good but a novice usually can't afford the best. For $1,200 you should be able to buy a fairly sizeable kit of young birds & then acquire the odd stock birds & replacements as you go.
