Very good as one would expect from Ian Hancock. Only someone with both Rrom and Rumnichal roots could offer such an accurate perspective. As a born again Christian Rumnichal with an Anglo Canadian Rromni, I would say that the Romani academic world seriously underestimates the positive cultural impact of The Romani kangeryia. Many in the UK are re- learning a standardised version of Rromanes to be able to communicate across vitsas. Once communication between the different groups is achieved the cultural nuances disappear and the central characteristics that we all share as a people are revealed. This is a very welcome bi product of Christianity and is by no means to the detriment of Romani of other faiths. The biggest battle as far as Romani rights are concerned is the mindset of higher education being at the expense of our cultural identity. Literally a Romani with a university education no longer being able to converse with his own people. If we can fix that problem which affects the vast majority of us all, then we can achieve on the same level as other ethnicities who don’t have that issue.
    Lasho Diwano Phral.

I think he means Vlac whenever it sounds like black. Quite interesting! I have just begun learning of the Romanies. I am living in the West Indies and my forefathers were brought here from India. History is important!

No vlax is a dialect of romanian (european language) many scholars call us "vlax roma" cuz we used to live in romania and moldova(large numer still live there)after slavery was abolished a lot moved to other parts of europe and americas in 19 century, but we ourselves dont call ourselves "vlax" we are divaded into clans like kalderash, rudari, boyash lovara etc im myself lovara i hope that helped

Why not go with something as close as possible to sanskrit since that's it's original root language and has a clearly standardized form?

@selenapisula542 yes I am sure you are real roma but you are not a real gypsy ! It was the romanichal entering great Britain 500 years ago that got the word gypsy coined. We are 'roms' and the wemon 'romni' but never roma . That is a word you made up after we had left you back in far east Europe.

@selenapisula542 we always called ourselves : roms or gypsies or travellers. Romanichal was the name chosen at the first world romani congress to represent our ronani sub group . It's not well used in the uk but more buy the romany who left the uk and headed to America. I am not sure if 'chal' is an old archaic ( no longer used ) word for people or for children. It's one or the other .
