Newfoundland Dog Pulling Owner on COOLEST Riding Dog Cart Ever!

  • This is a video I made of some short clips of Appa the Newfoundland (2 and a half years old, 110 lbs.) pulling her homemade riding dog cart. The cart was designed and built by my father and me in January 2019.
    No animals were harmed in the making of this video. The Newfoundland is a working breed and can easily pull light loads. However, please do not attempt at home without proper training and a well-fitted pulling harness.

      Thanks. It started with a couple of thrift store bicycles. The 2 front wheels are from a bmx bike. The rear wheel section is from a cheap mountain bike. We used the front fork from that same bike and welded it in the square metal tubing that connects the rear section to the front axle, which is just a piece of round steel tubing. For the rear brake, we cut the handlebar and welded it to the square tube and used a standard mountain bike brake lever. The seat is also homemade - just plywood, foam, and vinyl. The shafts that connect to the dog's harness are emt conduit which slide into metal tubes that we welded to the front axle.

      Thanks, Stephanie. This will likely be the only one I build. Too many other things going on, and building one of these is quite time consuming.

    Hello. Would you please make a video with pictures of the cart from every angle? Front, back, sides, etc. Along with a commentary on your thoughts on how and why you built this the way you did, and what you would do different or imaprove upon, if you built another one. Thanks in advance

    I want one! We have 2 Newf's (2 and 11.5 years old) and taking the young one for a walk is more like "her taking YOU for a walk". They don't like chasing balls or retrieving-this cart would be so much better. Also, going to the dog park-they play some and then just walk around (not much of a workout). That, and the fact that it's hard for people to realize because of their size that they're quite gentle and WON'T hurt their dog. I've had people kick my dog away from their dogs just for playing and had a stranger yell at me (last month) for basically non-aggressive play-just barking and paws on shoulders. My old Newf used to get bite all the time by smaller dogs-even in the Big Dog side of the park.

    • @thegoofienewfie2063
      @thegoofienewfie2063  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A cart for the young one to pull would definitely be a good idea. Newf's love to have a job to do, and pulling a cart is no problem for them. Just make sure it's on flat ground. Also, grats on the 11.5 year old Newf. Not many of them make it that far. I wish all of you good health for many more years!

  • @MsWillowbayOrelse

    Love the cart! I couldn't tell but does it have a hand break just in case you have to stop fast? This looks like it would be a good set up for someone who had a couple huskies that needed to be tired from their walk. This seems like it would be a good set up for delivery in a small town as well. I love when working breeds actually get to work. It really helps them not go nuts from staying in the house all the time. I had a lady ask me to help train her dog. She (a border collie) was jumping straight up and bonking her nose on the tile when she saw a sun beam. I explained that she needed to teach her dog new things at least once a week because her dog is a working dog. Just going for walks isn't enough enrichment for a high energy/intellect dog. Thanks for sharing this video.

    • @thegoofienewfie2063
      @thegoofienewfie2063  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for the comment. It does have a hand brake. You can see it in the very first clip right beside the seat bottom. It's a bicycle brake lever hooked up to the back wheel. Working breeds definitely need to work, and they enjoy it. Now that it's almost summer, we take her swimming as much as we can. The pull cart will mainly be for the colder months.

    Also, because of my health I can’t take her for walks (especially in the Texas heat) don’t worry, we live on an acre and she has our other dogs to play and run with. But with this, I think I could handle it, and she would be able to go on walks

      Sacco Dog Cart looks like a decent one, but I don't know how much it is or how long you'd have to wait to get one. The only other one that looks available is the K-9 Carting one, but I have no idea how it performs. I've only seen 1 video of someone using it. Unfortunately, I don't have blue prints or plans. It's a mishmash of scrap metal combined with a couple of thrift store bikes and required a good bit of fabrication.

      Just go back in history and you will see that dogs had jobs. Once we stopped giving man's best friend job, all types of terrible things happened to many breeds. Heath issues shorter lifespans and horrible conformation are some of these problems. This Newfoundland has a job and you can bet hes benefited greatly from the physical and mental stimulation pulling a cart brings
