Just Drive It: The Ferrari 250 GTO

  • What’s all the fuss about? Forget about the value, it’s still a car and it was built to be used.
    The first owner was an Italian resistance hero and gentleman racer. A very cool Frenchman then kept it for almost 30 years and apparently drove it 300,000km (there’s no odometer but that’s pretty heroic too). Today it’s just me and the keys.
    Let’s make some memories...

    "Let's see what all the fuss is about."
    Well Simon, even if it wasn't fantastic to drive....we'd still make a fuss over the fact it is one of the most aesthetically stunning cars in history. It is simply gorgeous.
    And then of course, there's driving it.

    Just more awesomeness! No joke, in between racing the snot of out a real GTO for two years, I used to regularly take my kids to school in it. As perfect as a race car could ever be, it is just as much fun on a public road.

    THE HOLY GRAIL ON FOUR WHEELS. 250 GTO ch 3451 GT. Sold to lawer Pietro Ferraro who raced it to first in class at the 1962 Targa Florio with a unique maroon/white roof livery. Accidents at the 1962 1000km Nurburgring and 1963 Coppa InterEuropa, Monza. Raced from 1965-1967 by Guy Rivillon in France. Repainted in 2012 to its 1962 Targa Florio livery (repainted in original TF-colour scheme certified by Ferrari Classiche)
    It was with this model that Ferrari achieved its first success in the European championship of builders during the Targa Florio 1962 where Giorgio Scarlatti and the owner of the car Pietro Ferraro won the Division III of the GT category and reached the fourth place in the overall ranking . At that time, the car was brown with a white roof and had the number 86. This GTO followed a long French career in the hands of Guy Rivillon. This awesome #3451GT at the wheel of PIETRO FERRARO (first owner of #3451 GT with first PLATE: TS 50656) under the chequered flag of BANNE (OPICINA) achieved a 5th OA in 1962 TRIESTE-OPICINA HILLCLIMB (5'05"3).

    • @JgHaverty
      @JgHaverty 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You have to remove superlatives here. If we disregard the subjective aesthetics; Though yes, this is one of the most beautiful cars in the world, right up there with a jaguar e type and toyota 2000gt... and the iconography of it being a limited edition ferrari ... you need to be realistic and understand a 2020 honda civic has more horsepower, a 2004 miata handles better, corvettes have been smashing this car for decades at this point not to mention the modern c8 iteration being giga light years beyond... this car is objectively "meh" in regards to objectives. It has style, pinache, iconography, desireability, and most importantly - rarity from an already prestigious and limited company. Its probably exhilarating to drive because of the simple fact it is what it is lol; at this point its a recursive feedback loop of coolness. But objectively, its not really that good. Its an interesting subject to think about really. Is it worth it? Yes of course, its a 250 gto lol. Is it worth it? Of course not, its a dilapidated curvy car that performs worse than a honda civic. Both are valid answers lol

    I think people tend to make "iconic" a superlative that transcends rational barriers into "feeling". Like Im sure its a great drive, probably up there with a 1984 Porsche 924 lol. After these years ,it has less horsepower than a camry, less torque than a miata, its a beautiful car, much like an E type jaguar or 2000gt haha... Is this car "worth the money"? yes of course, but thats only because of sentimental value. Over rated? Of course, as most cars are. Its iconic, rare, and beautiful. Thats merit enough. Discussing "power" and "Gear changes" in a modern sense? ... thats genuinely absurd and laughable. Honda civics are legitimately better in that regard, no laughs, no giggles. A new corvette *demolishes this car* in every aspect except for the subjective bits and rareness. Interesting mind palace to trap yourself in at least.
