  • Crab Cakes or Krabby Patty's ? Maybe both in this fun video. Crab cakes are the perfect party food and I'll show you how easy it is to make them. Full of delicious lump crab meat with a splash of smoked paprika aioli these one bite wonders are so good you can close your eyes and imagine you are gazing out over Chesapeake Bay. (recipe below)

    Here's the recipe...
Crab Cakes with Smoked Paprika Aioli
    Makes about 12 canapés
    8 ounces jumbo lump crab
    1/3 cup panko
    ½ tsp old bay
    1 egg
    ½ cup mayonnaise
    1 clove garlic, chopped
    1/2 cup mayonnaise
    2 tsp smoked paprika
    1 tsp minced garlic
    sprigs of dill
In a large bowl mix together the old bay, mayonnaise and garlic. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add the crab and panko and mix in. Shape the crab cakes using a cookie cutter (1 ½ inches wide 1 inch high) and sauté off the crab cakes in a little olive oil turning once.
Mix together the mayonnaise, smoked paprika and garlic. Use to garnish the top of the crab cakes and finish with a sprig of dill.

when i was a child living in virginia on the chesapeake bay my family caught our own crabs. we'd sit around a newspaper covered picnic table cracking open cooked crabs and picking out all the meat. my grandmother made her own crab cakes using a cast iron frying pan and bacon grease.

Cast iron and bacon grease. Very few items can't be made delicious with those two items. Your grandmother's crab cakes sound amazing.

I grew up on a creek that connected to the Chesapeake Bay.I'd sit on the edge of our dock and use frozen eel on a string to catch blue crabs for dinner.Than pick wild asparagus from the forest edge and bring it home for my parents to cook. The cost now in Texas is prohibitive to reproduce those crab cakes so I wait for trips home

The best crab cake I ate was when I visited Baltimore. I don't think I'd really had a proper one until then. The ones I've had before were often small, with the crabmeat chopped fine, even at nicer restaurants. The one I had in Baltimore had beautiful whole chunks of crab meat, was actually mostly meat, and was about the size of an average adult fist (it was certainly larger than my fist, but I have small hands). It came with thick cut fries, beet pickles and a fresh slaw. It was actually too much food for me normally, but I ate it all anyways, and had a distended stomach for a good part of the day that I had to walk off.
The large one you made is about perfect for a meal. Now I want to try and make these myself. :)

Frank in Maryland . The delicate flavor of Blue Ceab meat is essential, as Darren notes. These crabs may be caught from Long Island Sound to Texas. If you chance to have part of a left over crab cake, and best of all with a little imperial sauce, it will make a fabulus sunday brunch omlette!

As a person who grew up in a WEST VIRGINIA Born Family, We were Raised on Whatever we Grew, Shot, Raised, or Baked Ourselves. My Grandparents even smoked their own MEAT, & Fish, We made HUGE VATS of Sauerkraut, Made Hundreds of Jars of Jam From The Fruit as it came in season, Apple, & Pear butter, Canned Vegetables, Fruit, & Meat,(What wasn't Smoked), & Absolutely Nothing went to waste! What I find so funny, Is your Talking about the "English Breakfasts". We had the same things Every Day. Ham, Sausage, Bacon, Eggs, Potatoes, Toast, Biscuits, Home Churned Butter, Fresh Milk, Etc. Everything was Cooked & Baked On the Wood Cook stove. We Didn't Consider It Extraordinary. It was A Daily Thing. I Still, do the same things today. The only difference is, Now I have a gas Stove, & a Refrigerator and Freezer instead of a Root cellar. Personally, I think I preferred the days When we didn't run to the grocery store for Everything we wanted like people do now! At Christmas Time, The Sears Catalog was where we did the shopping, & Kids Didn't Expect Thousands of Dollars in Toys Every Year! I Preferred it That way, rather than the way it is now! People are Much Too Picky, & Tend to be Greedy Now. No, I'm not ancient. Not even 60 yet, but I Still think things are Worse Now than they were even just a few years ago when people worked for what they had, & it was Considered a NORMAL WAY OF LIFE!

Personally, I'm not a fan of crab and I've tried it in many forms. Are there any foods you don't like? How do you judge the taste of a food you don't like? When I was in Hawaii, I went on a tour of the Dole plantation and the tour guide sliced one up for everyone to taste. They asked, "Isn't it the best pineapple you've ever tasted?" I had to tell them, I don't like pineapple. I told them it wasn't the worst pineapple I'd ever tasted. I've always wondered how cooks can make a good version of a food they don't like.
